The National Band Association (NBA) recently awarded the Tarpon Springs Leadership Conservatory for the Arts the 2016 National NBA Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award. The Conservatory was recognized in Chicago at the Mid-West National Band and Orchestra Conference. The Tarpon Springs Leadership Conservatory was the only high school in the United States selected for this honor.

The National Band Association recognizes outstanding bands in the United States with this award. Their Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award is part of the association’s initiative to honor bands across the nation that challenge students and promote standards of excellence. To be eligible for a Blue Ribbon Award, bands must submit multiple recordings, videos, documentation of success in performing arts

festivals and recommendations from prominent music educators. The data is then reviewed by a state chairman, a division committee and a national panel of prominent collegiate music educators. Bands chosen for this prestigious award must demonstrate a history of excellence in their program.

Conservatory Magnet Director Kevin Ford stated, “This recognition signifies what can be achieved when we work together towards attaining excellence in every aspect of our lives. We would to thank our staff, students, parents, alumni, and administrators for their contributions to our legacy of excellence, which resulted in this achievement.

SoftballThe 2016 Sponger Softball team is primed and ready for a school history making season. Coming off a 2015 season that saw the program reach the regional semi-finals for the first time, while only losing 2 starters to graduation, it is obvious that hopes are high for another successful season.

Returning to the program are: Senior, Julie Allen; Juniors, Emily Merino and Morgan Mills, Sophomores, Devyn Howard, Hunter Ruch, and Jenna Wojnar.

Not foreseen last year was the possibility of a large freshman class in 2016. Joining an already talented returning group are eight equally talented newcomers to the program, more than doubling the talent base of Sponger softball for years to come.

New to the program are: Junior, Cardaejia Talley; Freshmen, Cyenna Dziadik, Kaitlyn Farrar, Kelsi Jeffries, Cameryn Maga, Gabrielle Renner, Anna Saglimbeni, Mackenzie Smith, and Erin Watson.

Sponger Softball has already begun this season with 3 quality wins. In preseason action, the team defeated Pasco county power Mitchell HS 4-2, and then beat Northside Christian 14-2. The regular season opened on the road at Northeast HS where the Spongers rallied late in the game to take a 12-3 win. They will open district play at Boca Ciega on Feb. 9th. The home opener will be against rival East Lake on Feb. 18th. Come show your support of a team that is primed to achieve greatness for the Sponger Athletic Program. The team’s progress can be followed online through Twitter, Maxpreps, and C2Cschools. @Spongersoftball

Tarpon Spongers Sports

Jerome Fowler Recognized By The FHSAAJerome Fowler was recognized by the FHSAA for his exceptional sportsmanship during a recent basketball game. During a contest against Bradenton Southeast HS, Jerome was praised for his exceptional sportsmanship throughout the contest. Whether he was helping up opponents or teammates, assisting the referee find his whistle, or providing water to officials, Jerome exceeded ordinary expectations of a student-athlete. Coach Woodka and the Spongers have a winner in Jerome Fowler!

“We just can’t hide our Sponger Pride!”
