Respect Responsibility Kindness Growth
Dear Parents and Carers, Thank you to all of our families for attending our meet and greet parent teacher interviews last week. Working together allows us to form strong home-school partnerships which positively influences student learning outcomes. Thank you to those families who have provided us with school reports and assessments (e.g. speech assessments, paediatric assessments) from previous schools and specialists. These reports and assessments are of great benefit to us and your child as they assist us in getting to know them so that we can best cater for their learning needs. If you have not yet provided us with your child’s reports and/or assessments if any have been completed, we would really appreciate these being given to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Our preps started school fulltime this week and are doing a great job. It has been so lovely to see the way
they have settled into school, the routines, expectations and it has been wonderful to see the amazing
learning gains they are already showing. Walking through the learning pods each day, we can see the
consistent teaching right across the classes. The Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) have started
their PLC planning cycles, using pre- assessment data to plan for the learning of every child, and to monitor
their progress. We are very proud of our staff and their high levels of teaching and team work!
Facilities and Grounds
We have had some very productive meetings over the last two weeks with the Victorian School Building
Authority and the Wyndham City Council. You would have noticed two new buildings have been placed on
site. These buildings will be ready in the next few weeks for our grade 5/6 and 3/4 students to move into. This
means we will soon be able to access the library again for borrowing and library classes. The Wyndham City
Council met with us two weeks ago to discuss putting in an additional school crossing along Hummingbird
Boulevard. Currently the council is collecting traffic data (the numbers of cars and pedestrians) and this data
will influence the decision to put in an addition crossing. The council will also be liaising with Vic Roads to put
in a 40km/h sign to reduce speed during school times. On Monday we met with representatives from the
Wyndham City Council to discuss the construction of the soccer pitch and netball courts. The work for this will
be starting in the next few weeks. We have also engaged a concrete contractor to concrete between the
portables over the term 1 holidays. This concrete will then be line marked as an additional play space.
School Council
We would like to thank all of our parents who nominated for school council and to everyone who voted in the
ballot. We are pleased to be able to announce our school council to our community:

School Nursing Health Forms
The Victorian Primary School Nursing Program is a free health assessment service offered to all children during their first year of primary school. Last week, the School Entrant Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) was sent home for all prep families to complete about their child’s health, development and wellbeing. The information obtained from this SEHQ will assist the Primary School Nurse to complete your child’s health assessment. A health screening will be performed and information/advice provided to you when required.
Please ensure that the SEHQ is completed and returned to your child’s teacher, no later than Friday 8th March 2019. If you choose not to fill in the form, please return it to the school anyway. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Sarah Narres.
Every Minute Counts
Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don't fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.
School participation is important as it maximises life opportunities for children and young people by providing them with education and support networks. School helps people to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community.
Conversely, limited school participation is associated with a greater chance of dropping out of school, disruptive and delinquent behaviour and may lead to a cycle of rebellion against authority. These outcomes have later implications for employment, a range of health risk behaviours (drug and alcohol abuse), homelessness, poverty, welfare dependence, and involvement in the justice system
It has been very disappointing to be receiving a number of absence notifications due to families taking overseas holidays/trips. We urge families to invest in their child’s education by planning ahead and booking (overseas) holidays during the school holiday period. Please note that these absences will be recorded as unapproved and teachers will not be in a position to organise extra work for children to complete while they are away.
Uniform
We have been noticing some children not wearing hats, or wearing hats that are not our school uniform. School uniform hats are available for sale through Reception for $17.00. If you need to purchase a hat for your child you may do this directly through Reception or by sending the money to school with your child in a named envelope.
Jumpers and cardigans are now available for purchase through our uniform suppliers, Rushfords (Noone Imagewear) in Werribee. Hoodies are not part of our school uniform and must not be worn to school.
Extra-Curricular
Harmony Day
We are so proud to be part of such a wonderfully diverse school community. On March 21 we celebrate our diversity through Harmony Day. This will be a great celebration for us. All children and staff will come to school dressed in their national costume or wearing orange. We will spend the day learning about our cultural backgrounds and those of others through stories, dance, art, sport, food and play.
Tomorrow we are celebrating International Women’s Day with a breakfast for our mothers and their daughters. We are also inviting all of our children to wear green, purple and/or white tomorrow to recognise the women in their lives; mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, teachers.

PREP COMMUNITY NEWS
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for making the time to come and see us for Meet and Greet last Friday. It was a wonderful
opportunity to sit down with you and discuss how your child has settled into school and share our vision for
the year ahead.
This week we are beginning our mathematics topic of Place Value. You can support your child at home by
counting objects around the house. You could also support your child by practising counting to 20 and back
from 20 at any given number. This helps develop a really strong understanding of numbers and their place in
a number line.
In reading and writing we are learning the letter formations and sounds for the following letters; s,a,t,p and
i. This week we have also introduced our first Heart Word (the). Heart words are words that do not follow
regular phonetic spelling patterns and therefore are words we need to know off by heart. See if you can find
the following letters and heart word in the book sent home in the reading satchels as part of your daily
reading. It has been wonderful opening the yellow reading diaries and seeing that most students have been
reading every day. Reading each day builds student’s vocabulary and promotes a love of reading. We really
appreciate your efforts in supporting your child with their reading development at home and we are well on
our way to achieve our goal of 200 nights of reading for every student in our school.
The weather has been very hot over the past few weeks and it is most important that your child has their
Tarneit Rise hat at school every day to protect their skin from the UV rays. As a community we take pride in
our beautiful school uniform and we kindly ask that we wear our uniform properly. Please refer to the
images below which show how the uniform should look if you are unsure.
Lastly I would like to thank you for ensuring your child is at school promptly at 8:45am each day. At Tarneit
Rise we passionately believe every single minute of learning counts and it makes a huge impact on student
achievement when we can start teaching and learning on time. We are so lucky to have such caring families
who believe so highly in the power of education and we cannot wait to see what wonderful things our
students can learn and achieve this year.
The Prep Team.
GRADE 1 COMMUNITY NEWS
Week 6 already! What an exciting and busy 5 weeks of school we have had so far! The year one students have been aiming to build their reading stamina each day. This can be supported at home by encouraging your child to read each and every night! In Numeracy, we have started our Place Value unit and the students are very proud of the flipcharts they have made. We will be focusing on skip counting by twos, fives and tens, representing and modelling numbers and comparing and ordering numbers. In Writing, the students have begun to explore adjectives and recognize the importance of using adjectives to make our writing more interesting and engaging! The students went for a nature walk last week and explored their environment using their 5 senses. This lead to the students describing their experience using very interesting words! Moving forward, the students will be starting to explore recount writing and we hope to see many adjectives within these pieces.
Our nature walk experience.
We would like to send out a big thank you for taking the time to come and meet with your child’s teacher on
Friday. It was lovely to sit down with you and discuss your child’s learning goals. We look forward to helping
all of our students reach their goals and achieve many great things. For those who were unable to attend,
you are more than welcome to organise a time with your child’s classroom teacher – please see them to
arrange a time.
Have a wonderful week! The Grade One Team.
GRADE 2 COMMUNITY NEWS
Hi Parents, Carers and Friends,
We have been working very hard in the first five weeks of our school year. We have been looking at place
value, breaking up numbers and ordering them from smallest to largest; and have had a look at money in
our maths units. We are setting our goals for reading and writing, looking to focus on ways for us to
improve every day. We are working to increase our stamina for reading and writing, meaning that we can
read and write for longer periods of time each week. The more we practice the better we get!
You will notice that your children are bringing home levelled reading books each night and they are keen to
read them with you! Each week their reading logs are checked by the teacher. The race is on to be the first
student to reach 100 nights of reading and beyond!
We would like to say a big thank-you to all of our parents and carers who came to meet with us at the meet
and greet night last week, it was heart-warming to see the support and care that you have for your children,
and for the partnerships we are forming to make them the best they can be.
We look forward to seeing you all soon.
Orla, Liana and Grant
3 - 6 COMMUNITY NEWS
Dear Grade 3 - 6 Families,
Thank you so much to everyone who came on Friday afternoon for our Meet and Greet. It was a wonderful
opportunity to get to know all of our families and to have an understanding in which we can work together
to support the learning of the students.
For the second half of this term, we will be beginning our Narrative unit in Reading and Writing, and in
Maths we will be continuing to look at Place Value before moving onto a unit on Location and
Transformation. We look forward to sharing the learning that comes out of these units with you!
Just a reminder that the 3/4/5/6 camp deposits are due! We strongly recommend that all students attend
camp as it will be a wonderful opportunity for them to build relationships with their peers, practise
independence being away from home, and enjoying new experiences! Please pop into the office to secure
your spot. We thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child is at school, on time, every day.
Have a wonderful week!
The grade 3 - 6 teachers.

COMPASS login Every family should have received a login to Compass. To access the parent portal go to our website and click the Compass link on the homepage. Please see the office if you haven’t received your details. Student absence If your child is absent an explanation must be provided to the school. There are a few options for providing this information;
Call the school on 7002 6580 and press option 2 to leave a message. Clearly state your child’s name, class and reason for absence.
Email: [email protected] Late arrivals School starts at 8:45 am and at Tarneit Rise we believe Every Minute Counts. If your child arrives at school after 8:50 they must receive a late pass from the office. This will ensure their attendance is correctly entered. Returning notes and permissions Notes that get sent home with your child via the classroom need to be returned by your child via the classroom. Teachers need to keep track of the notes being returned and this also builds independence and responsibility in your child. Therefore we are not able to accept notes at the office. Notes with money must be returned in an envelope or zip lock bag with your child’s full name and class clearly written on the front. We do not keep cash in the office therefore no change can be provided so please always include the correct amount. Hot Lunches Please ensure your child always has their lunch and snacks provided in their bags before school. We cannot accept hot food or take-away meals at the office. If you would like your child to have hot food then please use a thermal container so it can stay warm until lunchtime. Please ensure you are packing spoons and forks if required for your child’s food. Sickbay We highly recommend that all children have a spare pair for clothing kept in their bags in case of toileting accidents at school. We suggest packing a pair of black tracksuit pants, socks and underwear. We would like to remind families that the Department of Education and Training does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. We highly recommend that families have their own Ambulance coverage/insurance, and please ensure that we have up to date details at the front office in case of an emergency. Lost Property Near the entrance of each learning pod you will find a large grey laundry basket for lost property. Please ensure your child’s items are clearly marked with their name so that they can be easily returned. Also please check that your children are coming home with the correct items. If they bring home an item
with someone else’s name, please return it to the office.
Book Bags
Book Bags are now available at Rushfords in Werribee. When they become available at the office we will post an
update on Compass.

Science at Tarneit Rise, 2019
Welcome to the first Science update for 2019! My name is Carmen Barnes and I am the Science teacher at
Tarneit Rise Primary School.
In Term 1 and 2, grades 1 and 3/4 will be having Science lessons. In Terms 3 and 4 the Preps, Grade 2s and
5/6 will be having their Science lessons.
Semester 1 for grade 1 students is all about Physical Science. Students will take part in experiments and
investigations that explore the effects of a push or pull and how an object moves or changes shape. They
will be exploring how different strength of pushes or pulls will affect the movement of objects, how different
objects move through the air, water and on land, and explore gravity and friction.
Students will also investigate the way objects move depending on a variety of factors including size and
shape of an object. They will explore the way different sized, but similar shaped, objects roll and bounce,
such as tennis balls, golf balls, marbles and basketballs.
Semester 1 for grade 3 and 4 is focussed on Physical and Chemical Science. They will come to understand
that forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance. Their
investigations will look at non-contact forces and how they are similar to contact forces in terms of objects
pushing and pulling another object.
Students will also investigate how heat is produced and can move from one object to another. The sessions
will have students describing how heat can be produced, for example, through friction or by burning,
exploring how heat can be transferred through conduction and recognising that we can feel heat and
measure its effects using a thermometer.
Ask your children what they are doing in Science! There are lots of YouTube clips for children that can help
students (and parents!) understand the topic areas covered in classes, and lots of easy science experiments
that can be replicated using simple household items.
Science is fun for all age.
A Message From Mr Marley
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Over the course of this year we will be providing brief sport and exercise articles for parents to keep them
informed of the aspects of Sport and Physical activity we are working on in PE. This week’s article is on the
centre of gravity. The centre of gravity is the point where an objects or persons mass (kg) will be most
evenly distributed. Balance is a key component of any sport and is directly linked to an individual’s centre of
gravity, developing running technique and leg strength is extremely beneficial when lowering our centre of
gravity/mass to change direction. This is why you can change direction faster by bending your legs and
getting lower to the ground. It increases Lowering the centre of gravity increases balance and stability
in sport. Your stability, allowing you to adjust to greater force production by the legs.
Thanks,
Mr Marley

Bonjour! What a great start to the year we are having in French class. We are so happy to see how keen students are to learn and their enthusiastic participation. Here is a breakdown of what we have started to cover and will continue to cover for the rest of Term 1 to start building on vocabulary and foundation for French. In Prep we are learning different ways to say ‘hello’ in French (bonjour, salut, cou cou, oui oui), to introduce ourselves (Je m’appelle…), the French alphabet, our numbers 1 to 10 (un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix), days of the week (lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche) and colours (rouge, vert, jaune, bleu, orange, violet).
In Grade 1-2 we are reviewing “How are you?” And the different ways in which you could reply (Comment ça va? Ça va bien. Ça va mal. Ça va comme ci, comme ça.) We are practising our days of the week and working towards counting to 20 (and higher). We are also learning about different school supplies (crayon, ciseaux, gomme, règle, table, chaise, taille-crayon, livre, cahier). In Grade 3-6, as this is the first time learning French for many students, we are reviewing similar concepts as other grades in order to build a strong foundation in French. Additionally, we are learning to talk about the weather (Quel temps fait-il? Il fait beau/mauvais. Il fait chaud/froid. Il fait soleil. Il fait nuageux. Il pleut. Il fait du vent. etc.) and different ways to elaborate on how we are feeling (Je suit content. J’ai hâte. Je suit triste. Je suis fâché. Je suit fatigué. etc.).
One last thing! Something new this year that we are so excited to have started is French Club! On Wednesdays at Lunch Recess, students can come to the library to play games and spend some extra time learning and applying French concepts. French Club is every other week depending on the student’s grade. Grade 1-2 had French club this week (Week 6), therefore Grade 3-6 will have French Club in Week 7.
See you there! Again, thank you for being so supportive of the French Program at Tarneit Rise Primary School. Merci et à la prochaine! Mademoiselle Mick and Madame Wale
