2Preinstallation

Read the instructions in this chapter before installing TargetPro 4.7.6. These instructions outline the necessary system requirements for the computer where you are installing TargetPro 4.7.6, and gives information about tasks to perform before beginning the installation.

In this section:

System Requirements . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10Installation Components and Versions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11Preinstallation Tasks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .12

System Requirements

10 TargetPro 4.7.6

System RequirementsTargetPro Server and Client can reside on the same computer, or you can install multiple TargetPro Client computers to access a single Server. The computer(s) must have:

• One of the following operating systems:Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 1Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2

• A 256 color XGA or better resolution monitor with 1024 by 768 pixels.• A DVD-ROM drive for the installation of data and software.• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 2, or higher.• Enough disk space for a Server installation; refer to Server Space Requirements.• Enough disk space on the C drive for the installation. In any installation, some files are always

installed to the C drive.• Administrator privileges on the computer where you are installing TargetPro.

Server Space RequirementsEnsure you have enough disk space on your computer for the Server Software and data. The TargetPro Server Software needs 3 GB but the data requirements depend on the amount of data you have purchased and licensed. The data that ships standard with TargetPro can reach in excess of 15 GB.

Any supplemental data sets you license such as Business Summary, Consumer Expenditure Detail, and Census Data Packs, will increase these requirements. Further space will also be necessary for the addition of customer or boundary data to the system.

Note If using your own data, in addition to MapInfo data for TargetPro, then consider its space requirements as well.

Client Space RequirementsTargetPro requires space on the local drive for all types of installation. The Client Software requires a maximum of 1 GB of drive space. The Client Data requires a maximum of 4 GB of space. To minimize the amount of space you will need on the drive, you can install the Client Data to a different location.

The following scenarios show the various space requirements on the local drive.

• Default installation. The Client Software and Data are installed to C:\Program Files\MapInfo\TargetPro, and C:\Program Files\MapInfo\TargetPro\Data respectively. Requires up to 5 GB space on the C drive, depending on the amount of data you install.

• Client Software installed to the default path of C:\Program Files\MapInfo\TargetPro. The Client Data and Geocoding data could be installed to a different local drive. Requires 1 GB of disk space on the C drive and 4 GB on a separate local drive for the boundary and geocoding data.

Chapter 2: Preinstallation

Install Guide 11

• Client Software and Data both installed to a local drive other than C. Requires200 MB disk space on C (some components are installed by default onto the C drive). The rest of the installation takes up to 4 GB depending on the amount of data.

SQL Server RequirementsIf you already have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 installed on your computer and want to use it with a new installation of TargetPro 4.7.6, it should be configured with the following settings:

• Case insensitive code page.• Support for both Windows and SQL Server authentication connection modes.

Installation Components and VersionsTargetPro is composed of two parts: the Server and the Client. Both have associated data, resulting in four distinct installation components:

• Server Software• Server Data• Client Software• Client Data

Server Software

The Server Software portion of TargetPro consists of the following components:

• TargetPro Server version 4.7.6 including software, database tables, and stored procedures• Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition with Service Pack 2 and Cumulative Update 7• MapInfo SpatialWare version 4.8

Server Data

The Server Data portion of TargetPro consists of the following components:

Preinstallation Tasks

12 TargetPro 4.7.6

Client Data

The Client Data portion of TargetPro consists of several components:

• Boundary Files• Drive Time • GeoData• Workspace

Preinstallation TasksReview the topics in this section before performing a TargetPro installation or data update.

Plan the TargetPro 4.7.6 InstallationTargetPro Server and Client can reside on the same computer, or you can install multiple TTargetPro Client computers to access a single Server.

New Installation

Follow these instructions if you are installing both the Client and Server for the first time:

• Installing the Server Software on page 16• Installing the Server Data on page 18• Installing the Client Software on page 26• Installing the Client Data on page 28

Update Installation

If you are upgrading an existing installation of TargetPro 4.7, follow the instructions in Upgrading TargetPro Software in Chapter 5 on page 33.

Default or Named Instance Installations

TargetPro 4.7.6 can be installed on a default or named instance of SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 lets you run multiple instances on the same computer; these may be either default or named instances, or both. This allows you to group common application tasks to be served by a specific SQL Server instance. Each instance of SQL Server 2005 has its own folder location for its copy of program and data files.

A default instance is identified by the network name of the computer alone. You can have a maximum of one default instance. A named instance is identified by the computer name and an instance name as follows: computer_name\instance_name. It is possible to have multiple SQL Server 2005 named instances, with or without a default instance.

OverviewUpgrading from TargetPro 4.7 to TargetPro 4.7.6 involves updating only the Client components of TargetPro—the Client Software and the Client Data.

You cannot upgrade from a TargetPro 4.7 Server to a TargetPro 4.7.6 Server. If you require a TargetPro 4.7.6 Server, you must install it on a new machine or reinstall it on an existing machine from which you have uninstalled the TargetPro 4.7 Server and SQL Server 2000 (or any other SQL Server version that is not 2005). See Server Installation – New Users on page 15 for instructions on installing the TargetPro 4.7.6 Server Software and Server Data.

If your current version of MapInfo Professional was installed by TargetPro 4.7 (located in the TargetPro directory), then the upgrade from TargetPro 4.7 Client Software to TargetPro 4.7.6 Client Software removes that version of MapInfo Professional (version 7.8) and installs MapInfo Professional 10.0. Any versions of MapInfo Professional that were not installed by TargetPro will be left as is.

To upgrade TargetPro 4.7 to TargetPro 4.7.6, refer to the instructions in the following sections:

1. Upgrading the Client Software on page 342. Upgrading the Client Data on page 36

County County boundaries are the primary political subdivisions of states. County boundaries in this product represent:

Counties – A type of governmental unit that is the primary legal subdivision of every state except Alaska and Louisiana.

Independent Cities – Incorporated places that are independent of any county organization, but is recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as equivalent to a county for purposes of data presentation (found in Virginia, Maryland, Nevada, and Missouri).

Borough – In Alaska, a type of governmental unit that is a primary legal subdivision of the organized portion of the state, similar to a county in other states.

Parish – A type of governmental unit that is the primary legal subdivision of Louisiana, similar to a county in other states.

Washington DC – The entire area is considered a statistically equivalent to a county.

Municipios – These are considered counties in Puerto Rico.

Census Tract (CT) Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county delineated for the purpose of presenting decennial census data. They are designed to contain between 1,500 and 8,000 people of relatively homogeneous population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions. The U.S. Census Bureau delineated census tracts in situations where no local participant existed or where local or tribal governments declined to participate. Census tract boundaries normally follow visible features, but may follow governmental unit boundaries and other non-visible features in some instances; they always nest within counties.

Geographic Level Descriptions

42 TargetPro 4.7.6

Block Group (BG) Block groups are a collection of census blocks within a census tract, sharing the same first digit of their four-digit identifying numbers. Each block group represents 600 to 3,000 people, with an optimum size of 1,500 people. Most block groups were delineated by local participants in the U.S. Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program. The U.S. Census Bureau delineated block groups only where a local or tribal government declined to participate or where the U.S. Census Bureau could not identify a potential local participant.

A block group usually covers a contiguous area. Each census tract contains at least one block group, and block groups are uniquely numbered within census tracts. Within the standard census geographic hierarchy, block groups never cross county or census tract boundaries, but may cross the boundaries of county subdivisions, places, urbanized areas, voting districts, congressional districts, and American Indian/Alaska Native areas/Hawaiian home lands. Under the Census 2000 American Indian/Alaska Native area/Hawaiian home land census geographic hierarchy, census tracts and block groups are defined within American Indian entities and can cross state and county boundaries. These are commonly referred to as Tribal Block Groups.

Core Based Statistical Area (CBSA)

A Core-Based Statistical Area is a new standard adopted by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that consists of a county containing an Incorporated Place or Census Designated Place with a population of at least 10,000 along with any adjacent counties that have at least 25 percent of employed residents of the county who work in the CBSA's core or central county. CBSAs are categorized as being either metropolitan or micropolitan. This allows common statistics to be collected for less urban areas of the nation. These two county-based CBSA definitions cover approximately 90% of the entire U.S. population.

A metropolitan statistical area (MSA) must have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more inhabitants. Each metropolitan statistical area must have at least one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000. Additional "outlying counties" are included in the CBSA as long as they meet the commuting requirements specified previously.

The CBSA standards also provide for a set of geographic areas that are defined using cities and towns in the six New England states. The New England City and Town Areas (NECTA) are defined using the same criteria as metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas. A combined statistical area is a geographic entity consisting of two or more adjacent CBSAs where the employment interchange measure (commuting rates) between the two areas is at least 25%.

Minor Civil Division (MCD) Census minor civil divisions encompassing over 36,000 boundaries. An MCD is a type of governmental unit that is the primary legal subdivision of a county in 28 states, which is created to govern or administer an area rather than a specific population. The several types of MCDs are identified by a variety of terms, such as town, township, and district, and include both functioning and nonfunctioning governmental units. Many MCDs represent local, general-purpose governmental units, which makes them required areas for presentation of decennial census data.

— OR —

Statistical subdivisions of a county, including census county divisions (CCDs), established cooperatively by the U.S. Census Bureau and state and local government authorities. These subdivisions are used for the presentation of decennial census data in 21 states where MCDs have not been legally established, do not serve a legal or administrative governmental purpose, or are not well-known, are not well-defined, and/or have frequent boundary changes. These boundaries normally follow visible features and county lines and in most cases coincides with census tract boundaries.

Geographic Level Descriptions

44 TargetPro 4.7.6

Designated Market Area (DMA)

A designated market area is generally the group of surrounding counties or split counties (by 5-digit ZIP) in which metropolitan central area commercial TV stations achieve the largest audience share. DMAs are designed by A.C. Nielsen and define non-overlapping geography for planning, buying and evaluating television audiences across various markets.

There are a total of 211 unique DMA regions included in this product, one of which is a region that covers a "non-DMA" area (areas in Alaska that are not covered by a DMA definition).

ZIP Code™ A ZIP Code is a five digit number that refers to a specific geographic mail delivery area. The ZIP, or Zone Improvement Plan, was initiated by the US Postal Service in the early 1960’s for improved efficiency in mail delivery.

The US Postal Service does not specifically define ZIP Code boundaries. The ZIP Codes themselves are representations of street locations, addresses, and businesses for example that are grouped together for efficient mail delivery. As efficient mail delivery typically involves proximity, spatial boundaries can be defined that capture these grouped collections. A point may identify a ZIP Code in the cases where certain businesses or schools have their own Zip Code, or for a Residential Post Office (RPO) location where rural residents pick up their mail.

Places Places represent legal and statistical entities across the United States and Territories. These entities are originally defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, and their definitions are applied to all GDT data-based products.

Places– Legal and Statistical Entities

Legal Entities include:

Consolidated Cities A consolidated government is a unit of local government for which the functions of an incorporated place and its county or minor civil division (MCD) have merged. The legal aspects of this action may result in both the primary incorporated place and the county or MCD continuing to exist as legal entities, even though the county or MCD performs few or no governmental functions and has few or no elected officials. Where this occurs, and where one or more other incorporated places in the county or MCD continue to function as separate governments, even though they have been included in the consolidated government, the primary incorporated place is referred to as a "consolidated city." The U.S. Census Bureau classifies the separately incorporated places within the consolidated city as place entities and creates a separate place (balance) record for the portion of the consolidated city not within any other place.

Incorporated Places Incorporated places are those reported to the U.S. Census Bureau as legally in existence as of the latest Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS), under the laws of their respective states. An incorporated place is established to provide governmental functions for a concentration of people as opposed to a minor civil division, which generally is created to provide services or administer an area without regard, necessarily, to population. Places may extend across county and county subdivision boundaries. An incorporated place can be a city, city and borough, borough, municipality, town, village, or rarely, undesignated. But, for census purposes, incorporated places exclude:

The boroughs in Alaska (treated as statistical equivalents of counties)

Towns in the New England States, New York, and Wisconsin (treated as MCDs)

The boroughs in New York (treated as MCDs)

The balance portions of consolidated cities (statistical equivalents of incorporated places)

The incorporated places known as “independent cities" in Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia (treated as statistical equivalents of counties)

Geographic Level Descriptions

46 TargetPro 4.7.6

Statistical Entities include:

Place Boundaries do not completely cover the surface of the United States. Not every area is covered by a Populated Place, unlike Minor Civil Division boundaries, which completely cover the surface of the United States.

Census Designated Places (CDPs)

CDPs are delineated for the decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places. CDPs are delineated to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the state in which they are located. The boundaries usually are defined in co-operation with local or tribal officials. These boundaries, which usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity boundary, have no legal status, nor do these places have officials elected to serve traditional municipal functions. CDP boundaries may change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census may not have the same boundary. There are no population size requirements for CDPs for Census 2000. Hawaii is the only state that has no incorporated places recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau. All places shown in the Census 2000 data products for Hawaii are CDPs. In Puerto Rico, which also does not have incorporated places, the U.S. Census Bureau recognizes only CDPs. The CDPs in Puerto Rico are called comunidades or zonas urbanas.

Consolidated City (Balance) Portions

Consolidated city (balance) portions refer to the areas of a consolidated city not included in another incorporated place. For example, Columbus city, GA, is a consolidated city that includes the separately incorporated municipality of Bibb City town. The area of the consolidated city that is not in Bibb City town is assigned to Columbus city (balance).
