In TARGET, the learner is presented with authentic (job relevant) opportunities to learn, in the form of sce-narios that capture the essence of key points. Learners interact with simulations, as in a computer game, but with a serious purpose and focused on learning. Inter-acting with each „serious game‰ gives experiences that are honed into applicable knowledge, quickly.

We call this „the fast-track way to competence‰. These include „hard skills‰ (specific, teachable abili-ties such as mastery of a project scheduling program) and „soft skills‰ (skills with a people-element, that lead to success during a job interview and that keep the new appointee in the job). Hard skills are based on technical knowledge, and are often specific to a task. They may include an element of more broadly-applica-ble soft skills, e.g., to do with communication, empathy and sociability.

Soft skills are key to success in such roles as change agent, delegator, leader, listener, mediator, negotiator, strategic planner and teacher. We anticipate that even-tually TARGET users will not only practice both hard and soft skills using

our examples (including „wicked‰ problems, without a right answer), but will bring their own problems and will give permission for TARGET to share their in-sights, so that all users have the chance to learn from, and avoid, the mistakes of

others. This offers a faster way to explore multiple al-ternatives and thereby more surely reach an expert level of competence.

Your options include:

1. Pioneer: join companies such as Nokia and Siemens in helping us to identify key short-term and medium-term challenges and associated competence and HR needs, to do with Innovation and with Managing Projects

2. Tester: join our panel and get first sight of our learning scenarios and activities

3. Early adopter: during 2010-11, try our serious games and give us feedback

4. Foundation subscriber: register early and get discounted use of TARGET services

What is a Serious Game?“... a simulation which has the look and feel of a game, but corresponds to non-game events or processes... made to provide an engaging, self-reinforcing context in which to motivate and educate the players.” (Wikipedia)

Lasting ValueTARGET’s innovations facilitate the transfer of knowledge within organizations, for example in the form of knowledge assets, which may be carefully crafted with specific learning objectives or may result from the capture of a running TARGET session.

TARGET is pioneering the use of personalised Learning Plans

to help users to learn about professional skills and insights.

TARGET focuses on skills to do with Innovation and with

Project Management and whose presence or absence would have a significant effect on the success of

an individual or enterprise.

TARGET offers users a fast, Transformative, Adaptive, Responsive and enGaging

EnvironmenT to learn professional skills in areas that

are important to them, their peers, employers and society.

TARGET is linked to professional communities of practice. This

helps TARGET users to keep up with the evolving state-of-the-art

of their field of competence.

Need to attract, retain and re-train their staff.

Increased Complexity of Learning Behaviours.

Excessive Lead-time for Employees to Achieve Full Productivity.

Global competition for highly skilled people.

Shorter life cycles competences and skills.

Rapid Competence Development.Effective Learning Environment.

Highly Motivated and knowledgeable Workforce.

Increased Responsiveness to Changing Business Environments.Preparing for Lifelong Learning.

What is TARGET?

TARGET is an EU R&D project to raise an organization’s skills base faster than today’s mainstream training (shorter “time-to-competence”). TARGET will provide a software platform compris-ing content and process knowledge in Project Management and Innovation.

Learning Plan:

Each Learning Plan has authentic (work-relevant) activities embedded in it, drawn from TARGET user commu-nities and from experts in key domains (e.g. Innovation, Project Management). These activities are supported by Se-rious Games and Pedagogical Agents (on-screen coaches).

TARGETLearning Process

Throughout, there is sup-port from the TARGET Integrative Framework, which inter-links:

Experience Management:Learn efficiently and effectively.

Learning Communities: Share knowledge and experiences

with others.

Threshold Concepts: Find powerful ways

to organize problems.

Cognitive Load Minimization:

Find a low effort path to enhance competence.

Knowledge Ecology: Harness the Wisdom of Crowds.
