inTRoduCTionThisunithasbeencreatedforyoutodevelopskillsandconfidenceindesigningandapplyingover-combtechniquestoproduceshortgraduatedhaircutstructures(oftenreferredtoasanover-combtapercut).(Fig1)

Itinvolves:

• planningshortgraduatedhaircutstructures

• selectingandapplyingtoolsandequipmenttocompleteshortgraduatedhaircutstructures

• applyingafter-haircutfinishingtechniques

• thesafeapplicationofhealthandsafetypractices.

Thelearningguideactivitiesaredesignedtoguideyouthroughastructuredcuttingprocess.Thisprocesswillbuildyourconfidenceincreatingavarietyofshortgraduateddesignsusingavarietyoftoolsandequipment.

definitionsThetraditionalterminologyusedtodescribeashortgraduationis‘men’sshortbackandsides’or‘men’stapercut’,and‘ladies’shingle’.

Bothofthesestylesbecamefashionableinthe1920sandhavebecome‘classichairstyles’.

Basicallythesestylesarecutveryclosetothescalpatthenapehairline,graduatingtolongerlengthsabovetheoccipitalbone.

Themen’sstyleiscutcloseatthesideswithsharpdefinitionwhileladies’stylesaresofter.(Figs2,3)

Thecommonlyusedterminology‘men’stapercut’shouldnotbeconfusedwiththecuttingtechnique,‘tapercutting’wherebulkandlengthareremovedsimultaneously,producing‘taperedends’.

AnalysisAgraduatedcutisalwayscombinedwithanothershapeoflayeringorsolid.

Thecharacteristicsofashortgraduationare:

• roughtexture

• twocontrastingtexturalareas

• aweightlineorareaseparatingthetwotextures

• diamondshape(Fig4)

• ablendingintothenaturalhairline(nodistinctlycutdesignlineatthenape)(Fig5)

• whererequired,thehairoutsideofthedesignlineisshaved.

Avarietyofdesignlinescanbeusedtocreateastyle.However,curvedlinesandshapesaremoreflatteringforfemales,strongangularlinesandsquareshapesaremoresuitableformales.

Whenanalysingthestructuralarrangementsofthecut,youwillfindthatthehairisveryshortatthenape,graduatingtolongerlengthsthatformintotheweightareajustabovetheoccipitalbone.(Fig6)

Thelengthsandtextureonthetoparedeterminedbythechosenstyle,suchasasolidorlayeredinterior.

TechniquesItbecameveryobviousthatthehaircouldnotbeheld(projected)betweenthefingerstoproducetheseveryshorteffects.Therefore,over-combtechniquesweredevelopedandperfectedtoachievetheclose-to-the-scalplengths.(Figs7,8)

Thetechniquesarebasedonthemathematicalprinciplesofanglingthecombinrelationtothescalptoachievethegraduationoflengthsrequired.Fig 6 |

Avarietyoftoolsandtechniquesmaybeusedtocreateshortgraduatedhaircuts.

Thetechniqueandtoolyouusewilldependonyourcuttingplan/desiredresult.

Scissors–arecommonlyusedtocreateshortgraduateddesignlines.(Fig12)Themostcommontechniquesarescissorover-combcuttingandoutlining.

Clippers–aregenerallyusedtocreateshortgraduatedandoutlineeffects,particularlyinmen’scutting.Clippertechniquesusedtoproduceshortgraduationmayconsistofclipperandcombattachmentorclipperover-combcutting.(Fig13)

Razors (straight/open-blade)–areusedtooutlineshaveshortgraduatedhaircuts,generallymen’scuts.(Fig14)

Cutting combs –Apartfromthegeneralcuttingcomb,taperedcombsareverypliableandnarrowtoafineend.Theseareparticularlyusefulwhenyouneedtogetclosetothehairline/scalpinshortgraduatedcuts(Fig15)
