their own apartment building with the word “neighborhood”, while other times they refer to all of Kannelmäki as their “neighborhood”.

While going through neighborhood drawings from Helsinki stories workshop, it is quite obvious that we understand neighborhood totally multilayered and multilaterad way; for some it is just the own house (one small spot in Helsinki) while for some it might even be complicated connections between different individually important places in Helsinki(See Figures). These places can be for example green areas in Helsinki and they are might be connected with some action aspect for example cycling.

NEIGHBORHOOD AND ACTION

But the neighborhood is much more than a static stage; a house full of people or a block full of houses. It includes the action level; knowing each other but also chatting and doing things together and its best sharing and caring each other. Next are quotes from Kannelmäki inhabitants’ interviews.

I live in this house where there are mostly older people and we have all these kind of happenings of our own. For example we have this kind of card game club, it is on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. I am for example now going again to play and this describes precisely that we

another. We care if someone has for example not been seen for a while, we go to knock on the door or then we contact someone who has the key to the apartment. So we do not, we do not forget.

During summer, but not that much during winter, I am not so much at home, but then when I am then we always with the neighbors...now and then we even get drunk together. With one woman we “make the world a better place” in the garden. And then we have these community efforts (talkoot) and afterwards we have these evening get together, and have like that quite much to do with each other. There is help from the neighbors, and sometimes you go borrow something, A; sugar, B;tongs, so like that...

For a good neighborhood the action level is most relevant. Good neighborhood is not a passive situation it is an active stage and it needs inhabitants own participation. According to Wenger (1998, 72-75) a community of practice include the action and commitment aspects and therefore it is important to understand that although the neighborhood is often called as a community, without the action aspect it is not a community, and it just stays as a place. Engagement and commitment are needed for the belonging and for social coherence. Community of practice is a network where the mutual engagement is working. (ibid.) Participation to actions in your own neighborhood creates belonging and care towards

Empaattisen muotoilun kurssilla opiskelijat kokeilivat, miltä tuntuu asettua toisen ihmisen asemaan.

Nantes: 23.–29.3.2013,

Re-picturing Suburban

Neighbourhood

The empirical part of this paper is based on materials and experimentations from the course Repicturing suburban neighborhood, which were organized in May 2012 in Kannelmäki, Helsinki. While approaching rather abstract issue in the course, social wellbeing in a neighborhood, collaborative and explorative learning methods were used and approved.
