Doyourememberthefirsttangoyouheard? Ido.IknowexactlywhereIwasandwhatIfelt.ItwasBuenosAireshoraceroanditchangedmyworld:AstorPiazzolla’smusic.Iwasinmykitchen,preparingdinner;myhusbandwalkedinandputonanewCD.Thesoundetchedmybrain.Iwasadancer,contemporaryandimprovisational,andIhadan

immediateemotionalandphysicalresponse.Noiseprecededthemusic:clamourofvoices,chanting,wordsIdidnotunderstand.Fromachaoticsoundscape,musicwaswrought.Relentlessly,itdrewmeawayfromtheeveryday,andchuckedmeintoanunimaginedenvironment.Almostthirtyyearslater,theexperienceisstillfresh,reinforcedeverytimeIhearthatmusic.InourearlydaysoftangoinAustralia,whenthewonderwasnew,weandasmallgroupoffellowenthusiastswerepassionatelyexploringtangomusicandourpersonalresponsestoit.Itwasatimeoffeedingtheimaginationandcreatingmeaningfuldance.Wefoundteacherstoguideus,butwelaidclaimtothetangowediscovered.Wemadeitourown.WhatdrewustothetangoflamewasnottraditionalGoldenAgetango,orfamousorchestrasofthe1920s,1930s,or1940s(thatcamelater).NuevoTangowasthemusicAstorPiazzollawascreatingwithagroupofjazzmusicians,anditsuckedusintoanotherdimension,likeatornado.Themusicwasstrangethen,andisstillconfronting;afusionofunfamiliarandrecognizableelements.Raucousvoices,nervejanglinginstrumentals,crazybrilliantimprovisations,stridency,wailingnotes,apulsethatwasdrivingandunforgiving.FernandoGonzalez,ArtsandCulturewriterfortheMiamiHerald,wrotethatTheNewTangoQuintet‘hadassumedthespiritofitsleader–cosmopolitan…eruditebutalsopassionate,elegantyettough…achambergrouponemoment,andarugged,Saturdaynightneighbourhoodtangodancebandthenext’.TanguediaIIIwasthefirsttrackIheard,anditdrewustoArgentina.Thathauntingmusicstartedusonajourneythatcontinuestoday,intoakindofparalleluniverse,whereillusionandrealitydancetogetherinashadowynetherworld.Thatmusicstillmakesmeawareofmusclesandnervesinsidemyskin,andcausesmetowanttoengageandcontrolthisinnerbodysothatIcanshapemovementstofitthemusicalphrasingandtheworldofmyimagination.Gonzalezdescribestheplayingaspreciseandintense,thesoundoftheensemblefocused,looseandforceful.‘Themusicianswereintotalcontrolofthemusicandproveitbycasuallychangingdirection,moodsanddynamic…’Piazzollasaid,theygavetheirsoulstoit.TodancetoPiazzollamusicofhislateera,dancersmustunderstandthis.

ThesecondtrackwasMilongadelangel.Iwouldlikethistobeplayedatmyfuneral.Sometimesitisplayedinthelasttandaattheendofamilonga,anditisalwaysahauntinglybeautifulfarewelltotherealmoftangothatwemustleavetoreturntoournormallivesThestudio,whereLahoracero(ZeroHour)wasrecorded,inonesitting,wasinNewYork,acitythatisasfastandangryandconfrontingtoanoutsiderasBuenosAires.ThemusiciansofTheNewTangoQuintetwereAstorPiazzolla,bandoneon,FernandoSuarezPaz,violin,PabloZiegler,piano,HoracioMalvicino,Sr.,guitarandHéctorConsole,bass.Reminiscence

Actorpowerofrecallingpastexperiences;remembrance;memory.Thatwhichisrememberedorrecalled.Asurvivingfeatureorthelike,thatservesasareminder

Reminiscingisapartofidentity-buildingandgivesordertolifeexperiences.Whensomebodyreminisces,thosewholistenarelikeamirror,reflectingandaffirmingtheirlives.ThispaintingbyAdrienneGill(2002)remindsmeofwatchingthesunsetovertheprairieasanendlesscoaltrainrattledby.WewereinParachilna,inoutbackSouthAustralia,andasthetemperatureoftheairfellandghostlyspiritsdancedacrosstheland,Iwasremindedofanotheroccasion,anothersunset,inthehighAndeanregionofnorthwestArgentina.IntheoldmilongasofBuenosAiresIsometimesfeelthepresenceoftheghostsofpastdancers.Perhapsitisthefustinessoftheoldbuildingsandancientplumbing,themotesofdustinstaleair.PerhapsIsensesomethingintheshadoweddarknessbeyondthecircleoflight.Orperhapsmyspirittapsintothememoriesofpastloves,sweetmoments,strainsofregret,thattango’soldpeoplebringtolifeeachtimetheydance.Musichaspowertoevokememoriesoftimespast,placesvisited,andpeopleknown.Researchshowsthatplayingfamiliarmusiccanunlockmemories,andishelpfulincalmingpeoplewhosuffermentalimpairmentanddiseaseslikedementia.RhythmicmusiccanhelppeoplesufferingfromParkinson’sdiseaseandotherneurologicaldisorderstomovemorefreelyandwithbetterbalance.Musiccanalsoenergize,relax,easetension,facilitatestudy,inducesleep,enhancehealing,andincreasegrowthinplants.Iwaswalkingthedog,thinkingaboutthepowerofmusic.WhenIwalkwithafriend,wetalk.ButwhenIwalkalone,songsoftenfloatintomyhead,unbidden.Ihumalongandwalk

unthinkinglyintimewiththebeat.Playingtennis,thesamethinghappened.Acatchytunewouldfillmyhead;mygamewouldflow.Waitingfortrafficlightstoturngreen,today,Isaw,STOP.LOOK.LISTEN.THINK,stencilledontothefootpath.Thewordsarepartofacurrentsafetycampaign,butIwonderiftheyareaseffectiveasthesongwelearnedaskidsinprimaryschool.Sixtyyearsago,wechortled,inclassandonourwalkhome(whichwedidunaccompaniedbyadults),‘Istopandlookandlisten,andthenI’msuretoknowthatIwillalwayscomebacksafe,nomatterwhereIgo.Ialwaysstopatcrossings,nothalfwayupthestreet…’Today’s‘STOPLOOKLISTENTHINK’isinstructive,butratherdry.Thefourwordsontheirowndon’thaveasappealingapoeticrhythmas‘Istopandlookandlisten’.Hopefully,themessagegetsthroughtotoday’skids,butitdoesn’tseemasenjoyable,orofferacollectiveexperience,asthelittlesongofmychildhooddid.Learningsongsisagoodaide-memoire.Icanhearthefirsttwonotesofapopularhitsongofmyyouth,andrecallthetitle,words,tune,andtherecordingartistorband.ManyoldermenwhodancetangoinBuenosAiresaretaxidrivers,andmanysingtheoldtangoswhenyourideintheircabs,ordancewiththematamilonga.MyresponsetoanorchestralrecitalorconcertisheightenedwhenIcanmovewiththemusic.Multiplesensesareawakenedandengagedwhenphysicalactivityisaddedtomusic.Sight,sound,smell,touch,andthephysicalsensationsofmovement,weightandgravity,areengagedwhenwedance.Wewatchdanceperformanceswithoureyes,but,whenwedanceourselves,welearnto‘seewithourskin’,feelingtheproximityofmovingcouples,evenwhenwecannotseethem.Wehearmusic.Wetouchapartner,handtohand,skintoskin,andfeelthecomfortofanembraceandthewarmthofanotherbody.Fabrictouchesskinwiththecrispnessofcotton,softnessoflinen,smoothnessofsilk.Wefeelanother’sintakeofbreathandtheirexhalation,and,unconsciously,ourownbreathingpatternresponds.Wesmelltheair,whiffsofsoapanddeodorant,perfume,bodyodour,dustandmould.Andwhenwehearafamiliartango,weremember.ThemilongasofBuenosAiresareplacesofreminiscenceaswellasdancesalonsInGeelong,theoldwoolenmillsandwoolbrokers’andwoolstorebuildingsareremindersofthedayswhenAustraliawaswealthy,ridingonthesheep’sback,exportingfinewooltotheworld.DeakinUniversityoccupiesoneofthesehistoricbuildings.Another,nearby,housestheexcellentNationalWoolMuseum.OneofthemuseumexhibitsistheMillWorker’sCottage,afascinatingplaceforchildrentovisit,toexperiencethewaysthingswere.ItalsoservesasaReminiscenceCottage,offeringasensoryexperiencereflectiveofAustralianhomelifeintheeraof1930–1950,alovelydestinationforpeoplewithdementiaandcarersandfamilies.Wewonderwhatwilltriggerreminiscenceofthisage,whenthefashionistodeclutterourlives,throwawayoldstuff,andfurnishourresidenceswithminimalistdécor.

Whatwillwehavetoremindusofthepast,whenourphotosarethrownout,andallthoselittlemementoesandnick-nacks,treasuresofourpast,havebeendisposedof?Mymostmeaningfulpossessionshavebeeninheritedfromlovedonesandfamily:handembroideredlinen,chinapiecesmymotherpainted,myfather’ssportstrophies,anoldfamilybible,asheerblacksilkchiffonbeadeddressmygodmotherworein1920.Thesegownsfromtheexhibitionof70yearsofChristianDiormighttriggersomeofyourmemories.

‘Recuerdo’ Amemory,asouvenir,arecordof… Also,thetitleofafamoustangoWewerefortunatetohavebeeninvitedtoamilongathatwascommemoratingtheanniversaryofthedeathofthefamoustangomusicianandorchestraleader,OsvaldoPugliese.Hismusicisoftenplayedlaterinthenight,whenthedancingbecomesimaginativeandintimate,andthemostskillfuldancerstaketothefloor.Thiswasaspecialoccasion.Thecitymilongashadallbeenclosed,afteratragicnightclubfire.AsportingclubwasthefirsttobegivenpermissionbytheFireDepartmenttoreopenasatangosalon.Theplacewaspackedwithelegantlydressedoldermenandwomen.Thewomenworeprettydresses,andthemenworetuxedoswithredcarnationsintheirbuttonholes.Theirdancestylewasdifferentfromtheregularmilongas.Couplesstoodonthefloor,notmovingintothedance,untilthemusicalintroductionwasfinished.Thentheytravelledaroundthefloor,dancingverysimply,withoutflourishesformostofthetango,untilthevariation,whensuddenly,andskillfully,theyswirledintoelaboratecircularmovesandturnswithembellishments.

MypartnerandIdancedtogether,andwithotherpeople.Wedidcanyenguetoanoldtango.Whenanothertandaofoldmusicbegan,amanIhadearliermarkedasaskillfuldancerinvitedmetopartnerhim.Hetookmeintheclosecanyengueembrace,andseemedsurprisedtofindthatIcoulddancethisstylewithhim.HewantedtoknowwhereIhadlearnedtodothis.ItoldhimthataMelbourneteacher,BillJarman,recentlybackfromBuenosAires,hadtaughtmypartnerandmehowtodancethisstyle.Backhome,IdescribedthatpartnertoBill,andhetoldmethatIhadbeendancingwiththecanyenguemaestro.HowluckyIwas.IrememberthattandaeachtimeIhearearlytangomusic.Anotherexperienceonthedancefloor,thesamenight,broughttearstomyeyes.Itwasatandaoftangovals,andanelderlymaninvitedmetodance.Hewasabeautifuldancer,gentle,andanexpertleader.Iwastransportedbytheexperience.Afterwards,hetoldmethatthelastvalswedancedwashiswife’sfavourite.Shehaddiedtwentyyearsbefore.Hehadwatchedmedancingthroughthenightandhaddecidedthathewantedtodancethistandawithme.Itwasthenicestcompliment.OsvaldoPugliesewasborninBuenosAiresin1905anddiedin1995.Hebeganhiscareerasapianistasanaccompanistforsilentmovies,andsubsequentlyjoinedvarioustangoensembles.Hedevelopedauniquestyleoftangomusicthatwasdramatic,complex,andrhythmicallychallenging.PugliesecomposedRecuerdoin1924,attheageof19.JuliodeCarotooknoteofthistango,thefirstwithathree-partstructure,withamelodicbandoneonvariationinthethirdpart.DeCarosoonrecordedthenewcompositionwithhissextet.Recuerdowasamajorhit,andhasbeenplayedeversinceatmilongas.Pugliese’sinstrumentalcompositionsofthe1940s,withtheiruseofsyncopationandcounterpoint,anticipatedtheavant-gardeoftangoandinfluencedlatercomposers.AstorPiazzollarelatedhowhe’dfinishplayingwithTroilo’sorqesta,thendashacrosstheroadtolistentoPugliese’sbandplay.HewasparticularlyfondofNegracha.OsvaldoPugliesewasoneofthefoundersofthefirsttradeunionofmusiciansinArgentinain1935,andhewasacommunistsympathizer.Lovedandadmiredbyhismusicians,hewasalwaysinsistentthattheyallbepaidequally.Insomeyears,hisorchestrawasbannedfrombroadcasting,asaformofpoliticalcensorship.Thisinnowaydiminishedhispopularity.PugliesewasimprisonedseveraltimesduringthefirstgovernmentofGeneralJuanPeron(1946–1955),andagainbythemilitaryregimethatoverthrewPeronin1955.WhenPugliesewasimprisonedorbannedandcouldnotplay,hisorchestraplayedon,withasingleredcarnationlaidonthepianotosymbolthepresenceoftheMaestro.Pugliesecomposed150themes,valses,rancherasandmilongas,butwasbestknownforhistangos,amongstthemNegracha,LaYumbaandMalandraca.

Counterboredom:dancetangoIfyouhaven’tfallenfortango’scharmsyet,youmightfearthatdoingjustonedanceallnightwillbeboring.Restassured,dancingrealtangoisnotboring.Atanygiventime,whilstdancerswillgenerallybetravellingaroundthefloorinthelineofdance,notwocoupleswillbedoingthesamestepsatthesametime.Ifyouwatchamaleorfemale,throughthenight,youwillprobablyseethattheydancewithnumerouspartners,andyouwillprobablynotethatthetangovarieswitheachpartner.Socialtangoisimprovised,soitisalwaysdifferent.Watchingaroomfullofgooddancersinterpretingthesamemusicisfascinating.Tangomusicbecomesvisiblethroughwhatthedancersdowiththeirbodies.Wegetboredwhenweareforcedtodosomethingthatdemandsonlypartofourattentionwithoutengagingourinterest.Thebestwaytodancetangoistobe‘present’inthemoment–prepared,alert,readytorespondtoanymoveorshiftingnuance,engaged.Tangodancersshutoutextraneousexternalstimuli,andfocusonpartnerandmusic.Inaworldofoverstimulation,itisapleasuretostepawayfromthecrowdtogotoamilonga,wherewewillinhabitanotherworld.Whenweleavethemilonga,wewillbealittlechanged.Thingswillhaveshiftedabit,andneverbequitethesameagainDancingtangoslowsdownthefreneticactivityofourminds,takesusawayfromthedemandsofeverydayexistence,andinvitesustoenjoystillnesswithin.Menhavetheresponsibilityofleading,orinitiatingsteps,andthiscanbestressful.Butguysshouldnotworry.Thereareno‘right’or‘wrong’tangosteps.Dancersworkwithpatternsandshapesthatfitthemusic,butitisusuallynotaconsciousprocess.Thebestadviceforsocialdancingistostartsimply,listentothemusic,walkwiththerhythm,andenjoythefeelofyourpartnerinyourembrace.Therestwillfollownaturally.GoodreadingOneofourtangoladiesrecommends‘TheLittleParisBookshop’asagreatread.Icontinuetogetpleasurefrom‘I’myourman.ThelifeofLeonardCohen’,bySylvieSimmons.Ihavebeendippingintoitformonths,onandoff,andfinditafabulouscompaniontoLeonard’srecords.ThewealthofinformationSylviepresentsputsLeonard’ssongsandpoemsintothecontextofamostinterestinglife,spanningandconnectingsomuchmodernmusichistory.Alsoonthebedsidetableisabookacquiredafterhearingaradiointerviewwiththeauthor,RomanKrznaric,becausethesubjectaddressesaqualitythatisneededtomaketheworldabetterplace.Thatqualityisalsoneededtodancetango.Thebookis‘Empathy.Whyitmattersandhowtogetit’.Theauthoridentifiessixlife-enhancinghabitsofempatheticpeople.1.Switchonyourempatheticbrain.2.Maketheimaginativeleap.3.Seekexperientialadventures.4.Practisethecraftofconversation.5.Travelinyourarmchair.6.Inspirearevolution.

Hygieneforcloseencountersandcontactsports(liketango)Handhygieneisveryimportant.AtmilongasinBuenosAires,somemenholdacleanfoldedhandkerchiefbetweentheirhandandapartner’s.Thispractice,weweretold,datesfromatimewhentuberculosiswasrampantinArgentina.Germsandbugsareallaroundus,heretoo,andcanspreadwiththeclosephysicalproximityandhand-to-handcontactoftangoatcrowdedmilongas.Influenzadeaths,measlesoutbreaks,foodcontaminationandgastroenteritishavebeeninthenews.Thentherearesnufflynosesandall-too-commoncoldsandrespiratoryinfections.Someteachersprovideantibacterialproductstouseatclass;otherteachersrequestthatstudentsnotcometoclassiftheyaresick.Here’sthegoodnews:washingyourhandswithsoapandwateristhesinglemostimportantpublichealthdirectivetopreventthespreadofdisease.Standardsoapdoesn’tkillbacteria,butsoapisasurfactant,anditdisruptsandrearrangestheoillayeronthehands,andallowsdirt,greaseandmicrobestoslideoffandberinseddownthedrain.So,dancers,remembertowashthosehands!Andhousekeepersandvenueoperators,remembertocleanthosebasins.WalkingthetangoTherearegoodreasonswhytangoteachersmakestudentsdosomuchwalkingpracticeandputemphasisonwalkingtechniqueinthedance.Tangodancerslearntofinelycontrolthetransferenceoftheirbodyweightfromonefoottotheother.Tangodancersmustwalkwell.Gait,orthewayapersonwalks,isincreasinglybeingviewedasanindicatorofhealthforelderlypeople.Slowingdown,orwalkingmoreerratically,canpredictlatercognitiveimpairments,morethanadecadebeforesymptomsappear.TheresearchisfromMontefioreEinsteinCentrefortheAgingBrainandYeshivaUniversity,NewYork,wheretheyaretreatingwalkingabilitiesasanextensionofbrainfunction,andlookingattherelationshipbetweengaitandcognition.Executivefunction,inthefrontallobeofthebrain,isassociatedwithcomplexplanning,andisengagedwhenwalkingandtalkingatthesametime.Astudyhasfoundthatthelevelofactivationinthebrain’sfrontallobe,whenapersontalksandwalkssimultaneously,isagoodpredictoroffuturefalls.Tangoteachers,PamandRichardJarvis,areinterestedinexploringwhetherimprovingwalkingtechnique,throughaspecificexerciseregime,mightbringaboutbeneficialchangesingeneralmobility,well-beingandmood,andfacilitatelearningnewskills.Pamwatcheshowpeoplewalk,andusesherobservationstoinformherteachingpractice.Onthestreet,shehasnoteddifferencesbetweentheconfidentwalkofpeoplewhofeelgoodaboutthemselves,andtheshufflingunevengaitofstreetkids,drugaddicts,andhomelesspeople.

Teachingpeopletostandtallandwalkeffectivelyandefficiently,mightresultinbettermentalhealthoutcomes.Andteachingthemtodancetangomightbeevenbetter.Manypeople,whocometoclasses,wantingtolearntodancetango,throwonefoot,ortheother,outtoonesideastheywalk.Oneshoulderisoftenheldhigherthantheother,andhipalignmentispoor.PeoplesufferingfromParkinson’sdiseasetendtostandandwalkwiththeirweighttowardstheoutsideofthefeet,andfallbackwards.Everyonebenefitsfromtrainingthebodytoalignaroundacentralaxistoachievenaturalrelaxedpostureandmovement,andmaintainbalance.AnalarmingtrendcanbeseenamongstagedresidentsinAustralianretirementcentresandnursinghome.You’veprobablyseenoldpeoplewalkingwithtinysteps,headforwardandspinebentover,shufflingbehindtheir‘wheelie’walkingframes.Thesedevicesexacerbatepoorposture.Manyolderpeoplespendtoomuchtimesitting,makingexcusesastowhytheycannotbemoreactive.Thehipandkneepaintheymostlycomplainofcouldbemanagedbetterwithexercisestoimprovepostureandbodyalignment,correctwalkingtechnique,andmaintainahigherlevelofphysicalactivity.ItislikelythatAustraliansinaged-carefacilitiesarelessfitthanpeopleofthesameagelivingincountrieslikeSpainorItaly,whereitissociallydesirabletowalk.Theoldpeople,whodancetangointheafternoonandearlyeveningatSalonCanninginBuenosAires,arelikelytobefitter,andatlessriskoffalling,thanAustralianretirementcentreresidents,whosemajorsocialandrecreationactivitiesconsistoftakingmini-bustripstovariousdestinations,usuallytohavelunch.Howoldisoldthesedays?WithSeniorsWeekuponus,itistimelytolookatsomethingthataffectseverybody:aging.Backin2013,aPolishcouple,agedintheirlate70s,madeheadlinesaftertheyturnedupataLondonnightclubanddancedtilldawn.Theownersoftheclubgavethemawarmwelcome,VIPseats,accesstoafreebar,andacourtesycartotakethemhome.ThearticleintheAgedidn’tspecifyiftheheadlineswereinPolandorEngland.Thestorywouldn’thavemadeprintinArgentina.For,inBuenosAiresandincitiesaroundtheworld,peopleasoldasthiscouple,andolderstill,getdressedupandgotomilongasatmidnightanddancetangotilldawn.Someofthemeatpizzaonthewayhome,ormunchonmedialunas.BeautifullittleCarmencitaCalderonwasthedancepartnerofthefamousElCachafaz.Hehadaheartattackafterdancingtothetango,DonJuan,andpassedawayin1942.Carmencitakeptondancing,andoneofourtreasuredvideoclipsfeaturesherdancingatangoather100thbirthdaycelebration,beforeacrowdofadoringyoungdancers.Shewaswearinghighheels,andwasstillabletoexecutehersignaturedecorationsandmoves.
