TANGIBLE RELIGION MATERIALITY OF DOMESTIC CULT PRACTICES FROM ANTIQUITY TO EARLY MODERN ERA ROME, 27TH - 28TH NOVEMBER 2014 INSTITUTUM ROMANUM FINLANDIAE VILLA LANTE AL GIANICOLO, PASSEGGIATA DEL GIANICOLO 10 IN THIS TWO-DAY WORKSHOP, ISSUES OF MATERIALITY AND MEANING OF CULT OBJECTS IN PREMODERN DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT, FROM ROMAN ANTIQUITY TO EARLY MODERN EUROPE, WILL BE DISCUSSED. SUCH OBJECTS, WITH A WIDELY VARIABLE DEGREE OF SACRALITY, WOULD RANGE FROM STATUES OF DIVINITIES TO RELICS, AMULETS AND RELIGIOUS IMAGERY OF GODS AND SAINTS REPRESENTED IN WALL PAINTINGS, TEXTILES, FURNITURE OR EVERYDAY UTENSILS. INHABITANTS, VISITORS, AND SERVANTS OF THE HOUSEHOLDS HAD A CLOSE, PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THESE OBJECTS WITH WHICH THEY SHARED THE SPACE, AND WITH WHICH THEY WERE IN DAILY INTERACTION, PLAUSIBLY IN A MUCH MORE DIRECT, PERSONAL AND EMOTIVE WAY THAN THE RELATIONSHIP THEY HAD WITH THE OFFICIAL AND PUBLIC CULT ITEMS. Workshop organized by Dr. Ria Berg (Institutum Romanum Finlandiae), Dr. Anu Koponen (Aalto University), Dr. Marika Räsänen (University of Turku).
