Page 18: Tanga Development Corridor

Lake Natron Soda Ash Project

The project will involve setting up of Soda Ash processing plant near the lake, with the capacity of 500,000 metric tones per annum ( MTPA) of natural Soda Ash and later on to be expanded to at least 1,000,000 MPTA.

The initial project investment has been estimated at US $ 300 Million with commercial production commencement in 2009. The project on completion is expected to create about 500 jobs as direct employment and over 2000 jobs indirectly.

Industrial uses of Soda Ash

The Soda Ash has extensive application in industry, households and agriculture. It is therefore a basic chemical industry in Tanzania

The Soda can be used in the production of Sheet Glass, Bottles and Glass: production of alkali carbonates, organic chemicals, soap, pulp and paper, cleaning and dying of cotton fabrics; Desulphurisation of pig iron; refining of water, oil, salts, etc. Blazing of clutch wove, enamel ware, etc; manufacture of detergents, dye stuff, etc.

Project Implementation

The National Development Corporation (NDC) and TATA Chemicals Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understating (MOU) for development and implementation of the Project.

Carrying out due diligence and confirmatory studies on going

Investors will be required to participate as equity investors, financiers, equipment suppliers, contractors, O & M, etc

Pare Copper Project

Limited trenching and some diamonds drilling were conducted in the project area during the second half of 1950’s and two open pits were established at Pare Copper Mine Ltd area.

Indications of high copper grade mineralisation were reported with a major thrust zone strike of 15 kilometres long containing small but very rich copper deposits from Mwanga to Lembeni.

NDC is mobilizing financial resources for carrying out feasibility study, including drilling exploration, to determine the economics of developing copper deposits for commercial exploitation.

Page 22: Tanga Development Corridor

Gemstones

Tanzania is endowed with various types of colored gemstones including the beautiful Tanzanite (blue zoisite) occurring in the corridor, particularly in Arusha and Mara regions.

Tanzanite is mined at Mererani from weathered rock, sometimes in association with bands, which are also of commercial value. Other gemstones found in the area include ruby, rhodolite, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, chrysoprase, peridot and tormaline.

Official gemstone exports were approximately US$10 million in 1996 majority of which were exported uncut.

Great potential exists in the establishment of lapidary and jewelry manufacturing industry.
