Tamworth Community Advice Network


Introduction

The Tamworth Community Advice Network was launched in January 2009and has become the primary local network of support providing free adviceand support to local residents concerned about issues such as managingdebt, dealing with unemployment, the threat of homelessness and manymore issues.

The network is a partnership supported by the organisations listed in thisdirectory. The idea for the network was originally raised by local voluntary sectororganisations through the Local Strategic Partnership. Its subsequentdevelopment including the relocation to a dedicated high street premises, hasbeen supported by Tamworth Borough Council.

There is a great range of advice and support available in Tamworth. TamCAN asit is known locally tackles perhaps the most difficult issue i.e. that people do notalways know what support or information is available to them or how to go aboutgetting the help they need. Our aim is to make it easier for people by gettinglocal support agencies working more closely together and promoting what theyhave to offer and offering joined up referral systems and a seamless service forresidents. This should remove some of the stress out of the lives of peopleconcerned about their future.

In the current economic situation, many people in Tamworth are concernedabout their jobs and the impact the economic climate is having on their ability topay bills and manage money. We hope that both the Community Advice Networkand this second directory will go some way towards helping individuals orbusinesses to seek advice at the earliest opportunity; get some support and seewhat options they have available to them.

Services Available TCHA provides supported housing, training and education services to vulnerableand disadvantaged young people in the age range 16-25 years. Our overallobjective is to equip service users with the ability to enter the labour market and/ oraccess further training and education, and to sustain a tenancy in the communityor return to a stable home environment. Trained support workers work with theyoung person to develop an individual support plan which encompasses the fiveoutcomes of "Economic Wellbeing, Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve andMaking a Positive Contribution". The onsite Learning and Skills unit supports thisby means of a practical life skill programme and a Youth Achievement Awardscourse. All service users are expected to participate in the Life Skills Programme.There are also on site opportunities to study academic and vocational subjects. Wealso arrange move on accommodation and provide resettlement support.

Who can access this service?Normally new service users come to us by referral from the local housingauthorities and/ or children’s and social services departments. However, selfreferrals are acceptable where potential service users are assessed as beinglikely to benefit from the programme we offer. • Single homeless / Rough sleepers• Young people at risk / Young people leaving care• Young people with mild to moderate learning disabilities• Young people with sensory disabilities• Young people with mild to moderate mental health problems• Young people with manageable drug and alcohol problems • Young people at risk of abuse and domestic violence• Young refugees

Services Available Tamworth Credit Union is a savings and loan society for anyone who lives orworks in Tamworth. We are owned and run by our members, who benefit fromloans at low rates of interest – much cheaper than doorstep lenders.

• Loans: our loan rates can’t go above 26.8% by law. Members who save for 3months can borrow at a reduced rate over a flexible period. Even if you’re nota member, we may be able to help – just ask.

• Savings: regular savings can be difficult, but at Tamworth Credit Union we make it easy.• Save as much or as little as you can afford, up to a limit of £10,000;• We can arrange to have your benefits paid direct into your Credit Union

Services Available THEPP is a homelessness prevention awareness project to help reduce the riskof people becoming homeless in Tamworth. We are trying to do this througheducating young people, community groups and organisations, abouthomelessness. THEPP runs group sessions looking at issues surroundinghomelessness, why people become homeless and how it may be prevented.Sessions are informal, and discussion based.
