Santos North Western Tour Cycling NSW is holding the inaugural Santos North Western Tour between Thursday
21st – Sunday 24th, June. The tour is one of the events on the Subaru National Road
Series and will see Australia‘s elite men‘s and women‘s professional teams compete in
5 stages over the 4 days of the tour.
The tour will be a major event in the region, showcasing centres Narrabri,
Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, Tamworth and landmarks such as the ANU Siding Spring
Observatory which will host a gruelling mountain top finish to stage 3.
The race is being run separate to the historic Keegan Downes Memorial Sundowner
Handicap and Gunnedah to Tamworth events, with all 3 races taking place over the
course of the weekend. It will certainly be a busy weekend of cycling in Gunnedah and
Tamworth!
We‘re looking to gain the community‘s support for
the event as we believe the Santos North Western
Tour will develop into one of the largest cycling
events NSW and across Australia over the next few
years.
Gunnedah:
The tour will consist of 5 stages across 4 days,
Thursday June 21st – Sunday June 24th. Leading
men‘s and women‘s teams will battle it out through
the regional centres of NSW in the third event of this
year‘s Subaru National Road Series.
Stage 4 on Saturday June 23rd will resume from 2 differing locations. Men will resume
from the mountain top of ANU Siding Spring Observatory at 10:45am and women

Coonabarabran at 11:25am, entering at Eden St, the men‘s race will then turning right
into Namoi St, before a left turn into Dalgamo St before turning left into the Oxley
Highway and proceeding towards Gunnedah. Both
races will conclude in Gunnedah on Conadilly St,
opposite KFC. The women‘s race will finish at
approximately 1:40pm and the men‘s at 2:05pm.
Gunnedah & Tamworth:

Tamworth on Sunday June 24th. Starting from
Kitchener Park at 10:30am, both men‘s and women‘s

Bryan Martin Park on Duri Rd, Tamworth. The men‘s
race is expected to conclude at 1:30pm, approximately

On the 31st of May and 1st of June, Tamworth High School participated in the New
England Regional Dance Festival. We had two groups involved; the Year 9 Dance
class and a second group made up of girls from Years 7 and 8. Both groups performed
twice, at a matinee and night performance. The ladies represented their school with
pride and made the supervising teachers very proud.
The Year 9 Dance class performed a piece entitled ―Come Play with Us‖. This dance
was choreographed by Ms Bradbery during Terms 1 and 2 and was based on the idea
of neglected dolls coming to life. The girls worked incredibly hard on the
choreography and wowed audiences on Friday night.
The 7/8 Dance group was choreographed by Bree Poetshka and Emily Bishop. The
girls all worked exceptionally hard over Terms 1 and 2. They gave up lunchtimes and
early mornings to learn and perfect the choreography.
A massive thank you to Miss Emma Bricknell who stepped in to help out with
choreography, costumes, supervision and polishing of moves. None of this would have
been possible without your dedicated time and support.
Next year Tamworth High School is looking forward to involving many more groups
in the Festival. So keep your eyes peeled for expressions of interest later this year,
early 2013.

TAMWORTH HIGH SCHOOL GIFTED AND TALENTED CLASS
FOR 2013.
In 2013 Tamworth High School will be offering an innovative Gifted and Talented students‘
program. This program will be based upon the most recent research in addressing the
specialised learning needs of students with gifts and talents. Students will be in an enriched
learning environment, with a focus upon cross-curriculum learning, rich tasks and diversity
of learning styles.
· One core teacher for three subject areas allowing for cross-curriculum development and the
inclusion of RICH tasks within the specialized curriculum.
· All students will have Personal Learning Plans developed with the class teacher and the
teaching and learning team. This will allow students to identify, plan, develop and
achieve their goals.
· The program will also cater for students with gifts and talents in the areas of public
speaking, debating, dance, music, drama and other creative arts.
· This class will have opportunities for participation in a wide range of enrichment programs
and extra-curricular activities and events.
· Students will be working in a dedicated GAT classroom with additional facilities to cater
for extra-curricular programs. Students will also have access to the specialised
classrooms for science and practical subjects.
· The curriculum will be based upon an accelerated program ensuring the students‘
individual gifts and talents are fostered in a mentored environment.
· A focus on a Middle Schools model will allow students to progress from their current
schooling experience and transition into secondary school learning with ease.
GATS Conference, Sydney 2012
With the creation of Tamworth High School's Gifted and Talented class for 2013, two
teachers were sent to the Northern Sydney Region's annual GAT Conference last week. Miss
Bricknell, the 2013 Year 7 GAT teacher, and Mrs Bricknell, Head Teacher Teaching and
Learning, were able to gain some expert insight into the latest research regarding the
specified teaching of Gifted and Talented students. There were guest speakers from leading
GAT schools as well as those from specified fields of gifted and talented teaching and
learning. The conference has brought about some exciting new ideas for the new class
running in 2013. For more information about Tamworth High School's Gifted and Talented
class for Year 7, 2013, please contact either Miss Bricknell or Mr W Woods at Tamworth
High School on 67 657888.
Half-Yearly Exams Last week students from Years 7-10 sat their half-yearly examinations in a range of core
subjects in the school hall.
The examinations are an excellent opportunity for students to practice their exam techniques
and demonstrate areas of knowledge and skills that they have acquired through their course
work this year and previously.
Most students will go on to their Higher School Certificate and all indications are that they
will remain pen and paper tests for the foreseeable future. Hence every bit of practice in
answering test questions under examination conditions will stand them in good stead for the
future.
Year 11 Legal Studies Year 11 Legal Studies will have a team in the finals of the Moot Court competition in Armidale in the near future, the date is yet to be determined. We were very lucky in our first round against Peel High school, it seems that we have some potential legal eagles in the ranks as the judge said that our team did a fantastic job despite limited time to prepare the case. Hopefully we will be successful in the final round. Year 11 Legal Studies R.Paull
Connecting to Country
Tamworth High staff were invited to participate in the "Connecting to Country" cultural
immersion program from June 4-6, along with staff from several other schools in the
Tamworth region. Mr Chaffey, Ms Nelson, Mr Smith, Mr Druce and Mr Leer attended on
behalf of the school. The three day program gave staff the opportunity to meet with local
Aboriginal elders and service providers and to strengthen ties between our schools and the
community. The activities included a visit to Walhallow Public School, where we were
given a boomerang throwing demonstration, and then had a chance to learn how to do it
ourselves. We also visited Little Wave Rock, where a smoking ceremony was conducted,
and were then taken to see a boundary site. Thank you very much to Neville Sampson, Stella
Lamb and Brian Sampson for the stories and experiences they shared with us, and for the
hard work they put in to making it a success.

time to teach the boys.
Big ED goes up in a puff of SOUP! Students in the Eddys class have enjoyed turning their prize-winning gigantic pumpkin,
nicknamed Big ED, into prize-winning, heart-warming pumpkin soup and scones.
All the seeds have been harvested, ready for planting another ‗whoppa‘ for next year‘s
Kooty Pumpkin Festival. Thank you to everyone who took some pumpkin home to enjoy,
and thanks to Kay Campbell in Food Tech for storing Big ED in the cool room for the
class.
We thoroughly recommend these:
Excellent EDDYS Pumpkin Scones

1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
3/4 cup heavy cream
3 Tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla
Method
1. Preheat oven to 200°C, and line an oven tray with baking paper.
2. In a bowl, whisk the flour, salt, and spices together. Toss in the raisins if using.
3. Whisk together the heavy cream, pumpkin, syrup, and vanilla.
4. Add to dry ingredients and mix quickly with a fork until moistened.
5. Knead in the bowl several times to gather any dry crumbs into the dough.
6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat into 2cm thick circle.
7. Cut into 8 wedges and place on over tray. Brush the tops with cream and sprinkle with
sugar.
8. Bake for 15-18 minutes. Serve warm and ENJOY!
Tamworth High School‘s annual Athletics carnival was held in chilly conditions last
Wednesday. Many students braved the weather and battled to keep warm in the hope of
obtaining points for their respective houses.
The wet and cold surroundings meant that no records were in any serious trouble of being
toppled, despite the valiant attempt of some strong performances.
The Novelty events again would prove to be very popular amongst the different age groups.
The students were unable to match staff in the tug-o-war challenge despite trying their best.
The staff had a few too many anchors, who were not planning to let their pride be tarnished by
the younger compatriots.
As for the much anticipated Athletics House Champions, it would be Peel that would run their
opponents into the ground. Brisbane managed to hold onto second place edging out Napier,
ahead of Fitzroy who was crowned with the coveted wooden spoon. Fitzroy had 4 age
champions, Peel & Napier had 3, while Brisbane had 2. The 14 years girls and the 17+ boys
age categories were closely contested with only two points separating first and second place.
All students who placed in the top two of each event, in each age group have the option to
represent Tamworth High School at the Arinya Zone trials in Tamworth, on the 25th of July.
A special thanks must go to Tamworth Little Athletics for supplying all their athletics
equipment, the Tamworth City Council to allow us to wait until the morning of, to make a
decision on postponing the carnival. We appreciated the help provided by Mrs Blacker and
Mrs Price assisted in the setting up and officiating at various events.
Well done to this years age champions who were:
12 Girls Charlie Kenny (Fitzroy)
12 Boys Reid Martin (Napier)
13 Girls Georgia Taggart (Peel)
13 Boys Tyson Waters (Peel)
14 Girls Brandy Carmichael (Brisbane)
