TPOA Annual Meeting
Tampa Palms residents participate each year in two
important community-wide meetings
The meetings are (1) the Budget Meeting which is held
before the beginning of each fiscal year and (2) the An-
nual Meeting held in May
The annual meeting is heavily attended with voting
representatives from each village and residents who
review matters of interest to the community while set-
ting the tone for the budget meeting in the Fall
Right now it would be both unsafe and nearly impossi-
ble for the Annual Meeting to take place as is normal in
May The current thinking is that it will be held in con-
junction with the Budget Meeting in the Fall
Tampa Palms CDD
April Meeting Cancelled
In an abundance of caution the normal CDD meeting for April was cancelled
It is anticipated that the May Tampa Palms CDD meet-ing will proceed on schedule unless ordered to be can-celled by the governor (The CDD is a unit of State of Fla government) The meeting will most likely be a virtual option with a dial-in capability access which will be announced on the TPOACDD web site

Path Use 101
The number of people using Tampa
Palms sidewalks and trails has exploded
with the stay at home orders
That has prompted some to suggest that
proper etiquette for using the sidewalks
and the multi-purpose paths in these days
of social distancing be reviewed
Recommended social distancing on 4 ft wide sidewalks is
tricky
Here are some tips to make everyonersquos experience more
comfortable and pleasureful tips gleaned from a number
of sites such as FreeWheelers TreeHugger and Fla Law
If a sidewalk or the multi-purpose path is busy walk
to the right and walk in single file
If approached by other walkers or joggers and if pos-
sible to do so safely one should step off the path until
they pass This is a welcome courtesy in these stress-
ful times
Bicyclists must always yield the right-of-way to any
other pedestrians while on a sidewalk or crosswalk
Bikers must also provide an audible signal before
passing foot pedestrians on a sidewalk or multi-
purpose path
Always step off the path or sidewalk when ap-
proached by baby carriage or wheelchair (They can-
not easily leave the path)
Think of the sidewalk as a two-lane two-way road
Dont pass someone in front of you if there is someone
approaching from the opposite direction ndash wait for
them to pass before you get in their lane
Did you know that there are 18 miles of sidewalks and
paths in Tampa Palms
In addition to Compton and River Park there are three
CDD parks [Amberly Hampton and Oak park]
Even though the CDD parks are closed it is only the
events (playgrounds racquetball tennis pavilions and
restrooms) that are closed The paths and trails are open

But just ahead of the SaferSafe at Home directives on
March 6 Mayor Jane Castor was the special guest
speaker at the weekly Friday meeting of the Rotary Club

There was much anticipation since this is the first time
in many years that a sitting Mayor has visited New
Tampa Rotary
Mayor Castor did not
disappoint In a very
informative interesting

she reviewed for the

Warning Signs Are There For A Reason
Because of its unique location Tampa Palms is home to
literally thousands of alligators The alligators inhabit
the storm water ponds the wet-lands and of course the
Hillsborough River which runs along the Tampa Palmsrsquo
southern border
Alligator nesting season is the most dangerous for
residents as the normally seldom-seen out of the ponds
alligators become very territorial Both the CDD and the
TPOA have strategically located warning signs
A Few Safety Hints
There are a few common sense tips for keeping your
children pets and yourself safe from these intriguing but
dangerous neighbors
1 Leave alligators alone Provoked with a stick or even noise they become much more dangerous
2 NEVER feed or allow others to feed an alligator They lose their fear of humans and begin to view humans as a food source
3 Make certain that small children do not play or even approach a pond or river bank or a wetland boundary
4 Keep pets away from ponds and wetlands An alligator can strike to grab a dog - even one on a leash - in just seconds with tragic consequences for the pet and the owner

Covid 19 Information Sources For Tampa Palms Residents
More Sources Of Information hellip
bull Where can I go for help if I think I might be sick This week Hillsborough County Commission Chairman Les Miller released a letter which he asked that communities circulate with their residents
In relevant part the letter states helliprdquoHillsborough County is extending FREE testing services to individuals with symptoms that meet the testing criteria established by the Department of Health and the CDC NO HEALTH INSURANCE is required and there is NO COST to you If you have symptoms you owe it to yourself and those you love to get tested now get the care you need and protect your family If you or a family member are feeling sick with flu like symptoms such as coughing fever or shortness of breath simply call the Countyrsquos customer service line at (813) 272-5900 between 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday They will ask you a few simple questions to find out if you meet the requirements for testing If you do they will schedule you for an appointmentrdquo
The full text of Commissioner Millerrsquos letter is available online at httpsmcusercontentcom25be437fec610a7fad7518885filescc437074-2b67-4bb6-8f08-c2534a1779c8COVID_19_Les_Miller_Personal_Messagepdf
bull What about reports that Tampa Palms zip has the most cases of Covid 19 in the County
The Fla Dept of Health has a marvelous dashboard allowing residents to track Covid 19 state-wide by county by testing data and even by zip code The media story that 33647 has the most confirmed cases in the County was factual but not the whole story Zip codes vary in size and population served radic 33647 covers portions of the county near USF Tampa
Palms Tampa Palms North TPOST 3 all of New Tampa and a portion of Lutz (to I-275) Population 70000
radic The 2 zip code is in the Egypt Lake area with 4 fewer cases and a population of 49000
That said the Fla Dept of Health Dashboard has a lot of information to track this virus in Fla and world-wide See related story on page 8 with access information
The World Changed In Weeks
The first Covid 19 patient to acquire the virus without travel in Hillsborough County was only diagnosed on March 3 a little over a month ago The world has certainly changed since that time Everyone is hungry for information A recent Gallup Poll indicates that attention to news media for local and international information has doubled since Dec of 2019 There are some excellent information sources where residents can review information at length not in 2-3 minute news blurbs that are interesting but easy to miss or misconstrue
bull What do the SaferSafe at Home order(s) really mean The City of Tampa has an excellent site where residents can get constantly updated information about the orders that apply to Tampa Palms both local and the governors orders The site also includes an FAQ section that expands on almost every possible question Simply go online to httpswwwtampagovnetemergency-managementsafer
-at-home
bull What do professionals suggest residents do to keep ourselves safe
The CDC is the de facto expert on this virus and the CDC has posted a web page with a series of prevention tips httpswwwcdcgovcoronavirus2019-ncovprevent-getting-sickpreventionhtml The CDC also has a page dedicated to face masks how and when to wear then how to clean them and even a tutorial in how to make face masks and much more

Staying Put For Covid 19
To meet the requirements of the shelter in place orders the
April members meeting was canceled future meetings are
uncertain as everyone struggles with Covid 19
The March Community Yard Sale fortunately took place
before Covid19 made its nasty presence known within
Hillsborough County
The yard sale was an amazing success
due in major part to the incomparable
Elvea Kelly with her wisdom and guid-
ance that has served Tampa Palms
though years of TPWC Yard Sales
Many Thanks From All To Elvea
TPWC Freedom High Scholarship
The proceeds of the sale and the bake sale went to establish
the Tampa Palms Womenrsquos Club Scholarship at Freedom
High
It was noted that the dog cookies were a huge hit and sold
out almost immediately
The proceeds far exceeded expectations and the scholarship
is in place
It took a lot of work to put the yard sale together as can be
seen above as members get ready by sorting and pricing

4 Keep pets away from ponds and wetlands An alligator can strike to grab a dog - even one on a leash - in just seconds with tragic consequences for the pet and the owner

bull What about reports that Tampa Palms zip has the most cases of Covid 19 in the County
