You can’t help but admire risk takers. Whether or not you are a fan of Cher’s, it’s impossible to deny that her unwavering ability to buck the trend and do what makes her happy is an enviable trait. You can call them brave, daring or adventurous—but risk takers are usually the most interesting people in the room.
This issue features a handful of Tampa Bay residents who were willing to think outside-of-the-box when it came to their homes. Helen and Chris Barrott pulled from their love of the water when they set out to remodel the kitchen in their Tierra Verde home. The eye-catching island featured on the cover is just one of the unique elements you’ll read about in this kitchen.
We’re also highlighting a Davis Islands home that was built around the principles of an Indian architecture and design philosophy as well as a refreshing outdoor living space specifically created to complement the con-temporary abode it resides behind.
One of our favorite aspects of our job is meeting the homeowners we feature in each issue. It is uplifting and inspiring to see their dedication to our community and to creating the perfect homes for their families. We hope their stories encourage you to create your own spaces that allow your personalities to shine through.
It’s hard to believe, but we are already hard at work on our last issue of the year. You should see it arrive in your mailbox in early November.
Sincerely,
Judy and Bob DeLuca and the Housetrends staff

If you don’t find the Barrott family gathered around the wood-topped island in their kitchen, you’ll find them enjoy-ing the benefits of living just steps from Tampa Bay. “Boating, fishing, surfing—you name it,” says Helen Barrott. “We’re interested in almost anything that involves the water.”
Helen and her husband, Chris Barrott, moved their family from Ohio to Tierra Verde nine years ago. “We both grew up around the water and we have wonderful memories from our childhoods,” Helen explains. “We wanted our children to have those same experiences.”
A cook’s kitchenWith the soothing waters of Tampa Bay serving as a backdrop, the Barrotts knew it was time to update their stan-dard kitchen into a space more worthy of its surroundings. They turned to Nancy Braamse, CMKBD, owner of Olde World Cabinetry and contractor Daniel Ashline, to help them transform their kitchen into a nautical-inspired culinary haven. “Nancy and Dan helped us build an upstairs game room five years ago,” Helen says. “We trusted them to infuse our love for the

ocean into the kitchen remodel.”Since Helen spent several years cooking
in her old kitchen, she knew exactly what she wanted in a new one. A few require-ments included a 60-inch Wolf range and an island large enough to accommodate seating and food preparation. “Proximity was very important,” say Braamse. “Helen cooks all the time and knew what worked for her and what didn’t.”
Along with the range, the Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, expertly hidden behind cabinet panels, are just steps away from the island, which allows everything to be within reach when Helen is cooking a big meal. “I can pull veggies from the fridge, chop and clean them right there at the island sink and turn right around to the range,” she adds.
Ocean-inspired designWhen it comes to colors and design, Braamse recommends selecting the coun-
tertop first. “Fall in love with a stone. We can’t change the stone’s color, but we can do anything with wood,” she says.
Chris and Helen’s passion for the water can be seen in their granite selection. The curved veining of the Blue Louise gran-ite mimics the movement of water and served as the starting point for the kitch-en design. The island cabinetry incorpo-rated the gray-blue hue of the granite and features a distressed glaze and crackle fin-ish. Topped with a large reclaimed white oak counter, the island, along with the large farmhouse sink, adds a rustic touch to the space.
Knotty alder cabinetry, featuring an antique bronze stain and glaze, lines the perimeter of the kitchen. The tongue and groove beadboard cabinet doors are remi-niscent of a coastal, Nantucket-inspired kitchen. “Chris and I love the warmth of wood and we wanted a weathered, rustic atmosphere,” Helen says. “We spent years

in a pristine white kitchen; it was time for something unique and different.”
Helen is quick to point to the multi-colored slate flooring and says she insisted on the material due to its durability. Not only does it complement the blue and brown color scheme, the slate holds its own against the wear and tear of two dogs and children. The slate was carried through to the adjoining family room and down the hallway to the front door for a seamless transition.
Braamse is also proud of the back-splash, comprised of Tabarka terra cotta tile. “It’s very soft, with a lot of texture and a subdued color and design,” she explains. “It brings a lot of visual interest to the walls.”
Comfortable styleNot to be outshined by the new color-ful kitchen, the adjoining family room also received a much-needed facelift. Ashline and his crew covered the ceil-ing in distressed wood to create a cozy retreat. Built-in units made of the same knotty alder used in the kitchen flank the fireplace. Braamse removed the old white fireplace surround and replaced it with rich Rainforest Brown marble with a leather finish for character. Helen, who is a big sports fan, loves the 62-inch flat screen television that resides in its own custom-made niche above the fireplace. “They know our taste and style so well,” says Helen. “Nancy knows how much I love sports; she also made sure to include a small television in the kitchen.”
The remodeled living space is the perfect place to end a day spent at the water. “My husband will bring home a lot of fish that he catches,” says Helen. “I love it when the kids gather around the island and we cook dinner and spend time together.”
Built-in cabinetry and a Rainforest Brown marble surround add visual interest to the fireplace.

“We refer to the style of this pool area as Resort Contemporary,” explains Louis Place, Sales Manager of Natural Springs Pools, Inc. located in Lutz. “Because it has a classic linear design, zero edge coping and high-tech water and lighting features all set in a large expanse of beautiful travertine decking. When there is more decking area than the pool itself, with lots of room for umbrellas and chaise longues, it gives the feel of a resort.”
Custom detailsTo the layman it would seem fairly uncom-plicated to convert an existing pool into a different design. After all, the hole is already in the ground, right? But, accord-ing to Place, even if the new pool is approximately the same size as the exist-

ing one, it is sometimes necessary, as in this case, to remove the concrete sides and bottom of the existing pool and totally refill the hole with new dirt in order to accommodate the new customized shape. After re-excavating to fit the new design, pressing the dirt into the new shape, a grid of 12-inch squares of rebar was bent into shape and thick concrete sprayed around it. Then a formulated surface product, in this case Aqua Blue StoneScapes® by National Pool Tile, was installed over the concrete to resemble the natural beauty of a pebble-bottomed stream. “Finally,” says Place, “the floor of this 35x16-foot pool and 6½ x 15-foot spa was sanded and hand-polished to achieve a surface as smooth as a terrazzo floor.” Thanks to the smooth surfaces in the pool, no bathing
suits will be ruined. One challenge the Natural Springs
team faced was finding an exact match for the Italian travertine tile that already existed in the lanai and outdoor kitchen areas. Fortunately, some White Pearl Turkish Travertine was discovered that defies differentiation, especially since there are steps separating new from old tile. Another challenge was to meet the homeowner’s request to have the traver-tine decking end flush with the glass tiles around the edge of the pool. “This is very difficult to accomplish,” says Place. “Most pools have coping that is curved and extends over the edge a bit to allow for the small inconsistencies that occur when the pool tiles are placed along the waterline. In this case the tiles had to be in perfect

alignment.”
Enticing extrasThe rectangular, spillover design of the raised spa also required special attention. The structure had to be perfectly even so that the water, which comes up to the exact level of the spa, flows over all sides evenly. The tub, which has 12 jets in a variety of clusters and a unique blower that forces bubbles out of the bench, stops the spillover function when in spa mode.
Adding to the resort atmosphere are several water features, especially the Crystal foam jets—solid brass heads, flush to the pool floor, which mix air and water for a bubbling “Champagne” effect. MagicStream® illuminated laminars, which produce non-turbulent 7-foot arcs of water projected in a smooth unbroken stream, were also strategically placed on each side of the pool.
A wall-mounted control inside the home allows the owner to turn each fountain on or off individually and adjust its height and direction.
This pool also has a double heater sys-tem, both gas and electric. While most Florida pools have electric heaters, the gas option, although more expensive, heats up faster. A salt water system was cho-sen because not only does it require less maintenance, it also produces less irrita-tion to skin than chlorine and less fading of swimsuit material. Instead the water itself feels soft and silky smooth.
Thanks to a contemporary design and custom choices, this pool is the perfect example of how attention to detail can create a seamless transition from the indoors to the great outdoors.

Preparing for your custom poolIf you’re consIderIng addIng a custom pool to your back yard, mIchael green,
presIdent and owner of natural sprIngs pools, offers the followIng tIps:
1 when comparing bids from pool builders, also consider infrastructure, craftsmanship, follow-up policies and warran-ties. these details are just as important as pricing.
2 select a pool company that is experienced—one that has been in the business for sever-al years—and has an excellent reputation. ask to speak with past clients to see if they are satisfied with their pool and their overall experience with the pool company.
3 winter is the best time to add a pool to your back yard. If pool construction starts in January it is typically ready to go for spring—just in time for summer break and memorial day weekend.

Tangerine Tango stormed into our lives as Pantone®’s 2012 Color of the Year, and things haven’t been the same since. Brash, punchy, confident, spirited. This intense reddish-orange and its kissin’ cousins have been showing up in all kinds of home products and we love the vitality they add. The Pantone® folks were definitely not con-sidering the Legally Blonde beauty’s opinion when they followed the vibrant pink Honeysuckle (2011 Color of the Year) with Tangerine Tango. Make sure you get some tangy tangerine accents to liven up your space this year!

Dishwashers keep it clean
Bosch: Touting itself as the quietest brand of dishwasher in North America, the Bosch dishwasher sports sleek design and built-in hidden controls for a custom look; some feature recessed handles, others, a bar handle. Bosch received the Energy Star award this year for Sustained Excellence, reflecting its commitment to efficiency and green technology, including its optimum wash sensor and a concealed heating element. With such a large capacity, you can hold a dinner party for 14 and still fit all the dishes into one load.ABOVE AND RIGHT: Photos courtesy of Bosch

Fisher & Paykel: Fisher & Paykel’s revolutionary Double Dish Drawer fea-tures a one touch operation, separate drawers, and allows for independent wash loads and multiple cycles. Additional features include a selection of water pressure variants with precise water temperature settings and a flow-through detergent dispenser.ABOVE: Photos courtesy of Fisher & Paykel
GE: Though they offer a large vari-ety of design and color choices, technol-ogy and energy efficiency are staples of a GE dishwasher. Some of GE’s dishwasher technologies include: Smart Dispense, which automatically dispenses the correct amount of detergent, the Angled Rack Dry System, which angles glasses at the right degree for easier water run-off, and the Single Rack Wash Selection, which allows you to run just the top rack to save water and energy. Refrigerators keep it cool
Sub-Zero: The Pro 48 from this industry darling and pioneer of dual refrigera-tion helps consumers keep food fresher, longer. Says Michele Bedard, vice president of marketing, “All Sub-Zero PRO 48 models meet rigorous Department of Energy standards for residential use, consuming less energy than a 100-watt light bulb over the course of a year.” Bedard points out other features that make it stand out, such as full extension drawers, interchangeable refrigerator drawer dividers, and a pair of two-gallon stainless steel washable and oven-safe bins that fit under any refrigerator shelf to store smaller items. She added, “The PRO 48 contains two compressors that help maintain proper air conditions and prevent odor transfer between the refrigerator and freezer sections.”ABOVE AND RIGHT: Photos courtesy of Sub-Zero

Liebherr: German manufacturer Liebherr produces built-in, freestanding and fully inte-grated refrigerators. Some features of Liebherr fridges include: separate cooling circuits, revers-ible doors, LED lighting, a large storage capacity, a touch control system behind the door, BioFresh drawers on telescopic rails and a self-closing mechanism on freezer drawers.ABOVE: Photo courtesy of Liebherr
LG: A refrigerator should have a high IQ, right? For 2012, LG has updated its line of Smart ThinQ appliances. The new LG Smart Refrigerator hooks up to your home network and communicates with your mobile devices and television for a total food management system. For example, LG’s Smart Manager’s Freshness Tracker will advise you as to when the food in your fridge is about to expire. And if the age-old question “what’s for din-ner?” keeps you up at night, the LG tech-nology can actually suggest dinner based on the ingredients on hand. Thirsty for a cold soda or beer? With the Blast Chiller feature, you only have to wait a couple of minutes for your drink to reach “ahhhh” proportions.LEFT: Photo courtesy of LG

Cookware keeps it hot
Wolf: Michele Bedard says that Wolf ’s brand new sleek, stainless steel convection steam oven is 25% larger than others of its kind in the market. “The external boiler heats water quickly and efficiently and can be refilled without interrupting the cooking process. The oven’s perfected precision technology senses the proper timing and allocation of steam, consistently
creating ideal cooking environments for a broad range of foods and recipes.” And busy moms will appreciate the ability to decrease cooking time by up to 25%: “The Wolf Gourmet feature properly adjusts the time and temperature based on the amount and size of the food being prepared.” ABOVE: Photo courtesy of Wolf
Whirlpool: One of the largest capacity ovens on the market, the Aqualift Stove features an odor-free self-cleaning system, a temperature management system, and a timesaver convection cooking system. LEFT: Photo courtesy of Whirlpool

Thermador: Techies, meet Thermador’s Freedom Induction Cooktop, which won accolades for its innovative full-surface induction stove. There are no traditional burners, so the touch-screen interface senses a pot’s shape and position as well as con-trols timing and intensity. Electromagnets are the technology behind induction cooking, and this cooktop uses 48 heating elements equipped with sensors.ABOVE: Photo courtesy of Thermador

Miele: Gourmet cooks, and even not-so-gourmet cooks, will salivate over Miele’s innovative convection steam oven, available in a classic or Europa design. With over 140 settings, including some pre-programmed options, this oven will inject just the right amount of steam into your meals using the external steam gen-erator. Davis Islands home adheres to vaastu shastra principles

Upon entering this spacious home on Davis Islands,
one is struck by the quiet serenity of the space. Though
the exterior appearance of the home is Mediterranean,
the design principles and interior finishes are distinctly
Indian. | When Dr. Ravi Bukkapatnam and his wife
Lavanya set out to build their home on Davis Islands,
they told their builder Matt Gataky, vice president of
Ramos Design Build, that they wanted it to be in accor-
dance with the principles of vaastu shastra.

Thoughtful designFor the Ramos design team, this meant adhering to very specific design principles such as the location and direction of the front door, the location of the master suite in relation to the kitchen and the inclu-sion of a prayer room. These and many other considerations had to be addressed during the design phase of the project. Additionally, this home had to accom-modate longterm guests including the Bukkapatnams’ family members visiting from India. “A main theme of this home is bringing the family back to the table. We were designing not just for the husband and wife but for the whole family,” Gataky says. “And in this case, extended family,” he adds.
White walls and polished Crema Marfil marble floors of the main foyer and living room are accented by dark wood triple crown molding, furniture and cabinetry. A large living room looks out over the pool area and features a spectacular onyx bar, which lights up from within with a translucent glow.

Stone is a strong element in this home. The glossy white marble floors reflect the soft light of the onyx bar. Burnt limestone columns accent the foyer with twisting seams of burgundy and green. This same limestone, smooth finished, is used elsewhere in the home for dramatic countertops. In the kitchen, two types of granite grab the eye. The perimeter counters and backsplash feature a dramatic black and white granite slab full of texture and life while the large, piano-shaped island countertop is a rich black. “I wanted to use a contrast on the counters because it is such a big kitchen and I didn’t want to use the same stone everywhere,” Lavanya explains.
With the kitchen being such a central part of the home—Lavanya cooks every day—it was important that this was chosen carefully. Several stone yards were used for the dif-ferent areas of this home. “I love my kitchen,” she adds. “I never get bored with it.”
The guest suite and home office cover one wing of the main floor while the core of the home features a central living and dining room. This is flanked by the large kitchen and family room off to the east side. A newly completed wine cellar tucked under the staircase includes bricks taken from the previous home on the lot. Due to the irregular sizes and shapes of many Davis Islands lots, some creativity was required to make it all fit smoothly.

Vaastu is an ancient Indian architecture and design phi-losophy that is based on the knowledge of the flow of Universal energy called prana in Hindu. Like the more well known feng shui, it is focused around the proper flow of good energy in a dwelling. The New York Times
website Ask.com, describes the two philosophies saying “The main concept in both feng shui and vaastu shastra is the concept of
five elements on which everything else in the Universe is built upon.”
Originally a sacred practice used in temple design, vaastu involves the five elements—Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Space—
as well as very specific principles of location for specific rooms of the home based upon their function and the direction they face.
The article adds, “Vaastu shastra and feng shui are both ancient and sacred
bodies of knowledge revealing the connection between humans and the dwellings they inhabit. In vaastu shastra, as well as in feng shui, the focus is on humans’ well-being, which can only be achieved when we are in harmony with nature and the Universal flow of energy.” Vaastu shastra, contained within the Sanskrit texts from the Vedanta, is a method of healing and improving the lives of people in relation to their living space.

Upstairs, the master suite encompasses one full wing of the home, including a large covered balcony overlooking the back yard. Directly at the top of the stairs, a game room complete with pool table and wet bar, lead to a large home theater. The two children’s rooms and a second guest suite are situated around an open area, which will soon be transformed into a home library.
Earth-friendlyAnother important element of this home is less visible. “This home is very green,” says James Ramos, president of Ramos Design Build. There is Icynene spray foam insulation on the underside of the roof and the first and second floor joists. “This house is insulated to LEED standards along with tankless water heaters and double-paned windows with LoE insulated glass,” he adds.
Additional major factors, such as the HVAC and lighting systems, were also addressed. “The energy costs should be 1/3 of what a comparable home of this size would have. All the homes we are building these days are to LEED-certified standards,” Ramos explains.
As a home that is designed with both good energy and clean energy in mind, it is a true winner.
