Tama County Agricultural Extension Council Establishes 4-H Endowment Fund

Being a 4-H member provides a young person with wonderful opportunities and generates lasting memories! In Tama County 4-H, more than 200 youth each year participate in club meetings, camps, trips and conferences, complete community service projects, and gain confidence in themselves through leadership activities and communication events.

During the October meeting of the Tama County Extension Council, members voted to help provide opportunities for more youth in the county to participate in these activities by establishing the Tama County 4-H Endowment Fund. The Tama County 4-H Endowment Fund and the Iowa 4-H Foundation were established to help make 4-H dreams come true. 4-H 400 and 4-H 1000 are designed to provide financial support for youth activities. You can make a difference in the life of a young person as a 4-H 400 or 4-H 1000 contributor. For ten years, an annual contribution of $40 or $100 is made by you, your family or your business to complete the 4-H 400 or 4-H 1000 pledge. Your pledge can be designated to the county endowment where the gift will be used locally to support youth or to the Iowa 4-H Foundation general fund to be used to support youth activities such as the Iowa 4-H conference, state 4-H camps and other state wide initiatives. One-time gifts in any amount can also be designated to this fund. For more information about the Tama County 4-H Endowment Fund, contact Cheryl Bruene or Jenny Hulme at the Tama County Extension and Outreach office or call 641-484-2703.

Tama County Receives $2,000 grant for Technology

Tama County Agriculture Extension District received a $2,000 grant for technology. The grant is provided through Farm Credit Services of America’s (FCSAmerica) Working Here Fund.

Tama County Agriculture Extension District will use the Working Here Fund grant to purchase 6 iPads and accessories. The students will use the iPads to take their annual Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) certifica-tion program, they will be used as part of the Master Gardener program, and for use in the 4-H program.

“The project will fill the gap that exists for youth, volunteers and families who have limited access to technology and on-line services and systems,” said Cheryl Bruene, county extension director. “The YQCA certification teaches youth proper livestock handling, nutrition, health, transport and withdrawal requirements to help insure a safer food supply. The Master Gardeners engage in the production of local fruits and vegetables for home use and/or sale in Farmer’s Markets.”

The iPads will be put into use this fall for students to have immediate access to complete their YQCA

certification and enroll into the 4-H and nomination of livestock.

Thank you to Farm Credit Services of America!

FSQA (Food Safety Quality Assurance) for those who exhibit livestock at the fair

is now YQCA (Youth for the Quality Assurance of Animals).

What does that mean for you?

If you are planning on exhibiting any of the following:

Swine dairy cattle beef (market and breeding) goat (dairy and meat)

rabbit poultry sheep you need to be trained!

YQCA is new to the state and every county is doing it a little bit different!

Here is how Tama County is doing it -

For those of you in grades 7-12—you will do YQCA online! You got it, it can be in the

comfort of your own living room! Or come to the office and use our computers!

For those of you in grades 4-6—we want to see you in the extension office to have hands

on training, meet other Tama County 4-H members and learn what is offered in 4-H!

Saturday, March 9 9-11 a.m. OR Tuesday, March 19 6-8 p.m.

Clover Kids—you are not required to complete this training. However, we would like you to

come learn more about your animals, you’ll be invited to come in April.

There is a cost for these programs (the money goes to pay for the program, not to Tama County Extension).

Cost for the online program is $12 per person and the face to face training is $3 per person.

Tama County Extension and Outreach Council will help with the fee this year!!

Coupons will be available.

This will start in January, so watch the newsletter for how-to-do this!

**If you tested in FSQA in the past and you are not expired—you are fine! Check 4honline for your

expiration date or contact the office.

Change in club accounts:

According to State of Iowa code, 4-H club accounts are considered public funds. The State of Iowa

auditor is requiring all 4-H club accounts be brought into the Extension Office due to this code. Our

goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible and we want to work with all who have

questions.

Treasurers will still have their role in the clubs—just changing slightly and will be trained as we move

throughout the year. We plan to have this complete by June 2019. A terrific question and answer

sheet is located on our website. Please contact the office if you have questions.
