TERM 4 NO.35 11th November 2013
SCIENTISTS OF THE WEEK – Brock Austin
THANK YOU TO THE FLEMING FAMILY FOR THE KIND DONATION OF A DOLL
HOUSE FOR OUR PLAYGROUP.
News from the Principal’s Desk Hi everyone, Last week was generally a normal one at Tallygaroopna Primary School, although Tuesday was a Public Holiday because of the Melbourne Cup. Congratulations to Connor McNab who won the Cup Sweep at the Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve. I am sure he will spend this money wisely – maybe even towards a new iPad for Secondary College. Tomorrow, our Grade 5/6 students will participate in the T20 Cricket Carnival in Shepparton. We have entered a mixed team and I am looking forward to seeing the kids work well as a team and have some fun. The 2/3/4’s will be competing in their carnival in early December – we are still looking for a coach so that we can perhaps take 2 teams (boys / girls). If you can assist in any way please contact me ASAP. On Friday, a Yachting Program is also available for the Grade 5/6 students, but at present only one family has taken up this opportunity. As a result, parents will be responsible for travel and supervision on this day and I will make contact with this family throughout the week to reinforce this. So far our Kitchen Program has been a great success after two sessions and I look forward to continuing to see many families attend these sessions over the next few weeks. A reminder to contact Jaala Free if interested in this program. Our School Toilet Art Project is also close to being finished and the students have really enjoyed being given the opportunity to participate in this and they should have a real sense of ownership with this into the future. Some photos are included in this edition of the newsletter again. Thanks for your great work Mrs O’Brien. A final reminder about the 2 Curriculum Days which are scheduled in the next month. These dates are Thursday 21st November and Friday 6th December. I hope families have had plenty of notice in regard to these and can make alternative arrangements for these two days. Have a great week everyone. Karen will be at the office until Thursday as always if any matters need addressing. Unfortunately, I will be away on Thursday and Friday this week at a Shepparton Network Principals Meeting at Mulwala.
David Brodie (Teaching Principal)
THE MULTI PURPOSE ROOM IS OUT OF BOUNDS FOR ALL STUDENTS UNLESS SUPERVISED BY

Congratulations to Leanne Good (our Knitting expert) on the birth of her grandchild, Max Troy, who was born on 27/10/13 weighing 7 pound 11.
If anyone would like to order from the last Book Club of the year, please return the completed form with payment by this Friday, 15th November.

1. Transition – Grade 6
All Grade 6 students need to have their blue student information sheet returned to school by the end of the week. We are anticipating a visit from staff from Wanganui SC very soon and this is when this form will be collected. This visit will also involve a general discussion about life at Secondary School and should be very worthwhile. All children attending Secondary School next year should have bus forms lodged with relevant Secondary schools. 2. Remembrance Day
Today we had a minute silence as a mark of respect for Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Special thanks to all of the students and staff for being so respectful during this time. Poppies are still available for sale at the office. 3. End of Year Excursion
Our end of year excursion to Echuca will be held on Thursday 5th December. We will be taking 2 buses to the venue and all parents are invited – first in best dressed. Because we are taking 2 buses we are positive about everyone being able to attend. Last year, all students were supervised by parents and if possible we would like this to occur again. Parent numbers have now closed and the cost for the day for parents will be $30 each. This will need to be in at school by Friday 22nd November. Feel free to discuss this at school, because we can negotiate a payment plan if needed. Final Timetable 9am – Leave Tallygaroopna PS by bus 10.30am – Ride on the 100 year old Paddlesteamer Canberra (1 hour) 11.30am – 12.45pm Free Time in Echuca – lunch if required 1pm – Leave for Squiggles Indoor Playcentre and Jurassic Water Park - access to Alfresco BBQ Area 3.30pm – Leave to return home 4.45pm – Arrive back at Tallygaroopna PS If Parents wish to bring BBQ food for lunch they should ring Squiggles Indoor Playcentre and Jurassic Water Park on 54803031 for general details. The only other food that is available is chips, chocolates, ice creams and drinks. No lunch food is available at this venue. http://www.emmylou.com.au/canberra http://www.squiggles.com.au/ 4. T20 Blast Cricket Tournaments The Grade 5/6 students will be participating in a T20 Blast Cricket Tournament tomorrow (formerly known as Kanga 8’s). We will only have one mixed team for the day and students will be travelling by car with Mr Brodie and Mrs Armstrong to and from the venue – McEwen Reserve in Shepparton. Permission forms must be returned in order to participate in this program. As always, behaviour and attendance will be closely monitored leading up to these events. Excursions are a privilege not a right at Tallygaroopna Primary School. We aim to have all of the Grade 2 – 6 students invited to these tournaments. Grade 5/6 Tournament – Tuesday 12th November (mixed team of boys and girls) Grade 3/4 Tournament – Tuesday 3rd December (boys / girls team)
5. End of Year Concert / Graduation Night This year at our Christmas Concert, we will again say farewell to our wonderful Grade 6 students as they begin a new journey at Secondary School next year. This is scheduled for Tuesday 17th December. As per last year, some Christmas songs will be sung and a few small speeches will occur before children receive their Graduation Certificates. Again, we are working on a Powerpoint Presentation which will be shown on the night which will reflect on children’s journey through their Primary years. Planning is still occurring with this, but right now it looks terrific. Copies will be available to parents at no cost – A CD will be required.
WE NEED A PHOTO OF THE GRADE 6 PREP PHOTO –
IF ANYONE CAN HELP OUT.

6. Library
Our next library session will be on Tuesday 19th November. There will be no school on Thursday 21ST November, because of the Curriculum Day, so thanks to Mrs Mitchell for being so flexible with this. Could all families return any outstanding library book as soon as possible please. Invoices will be sent home for any outstanding books. The final library session for the year is yet to be confirmed, but it will not be on Thursday 5th December. This is the date of our end of year excursion – stay tuned for more details.
7. Term Dates - 2014
These dates will be confirmed at the end of the November after our last School Council meeting for the year. Please keep these in a handy spot as you may wish to book your family holidays during the school holidays. All staff at Tallygaroopna PS will be involved in First Aid Training on Tuesday 28th January and the following day all staff will be involved in a Planning Day for the start of the School Year. As a result, all students will start on the Thursday. Term 1 – January 28th until 4th April (all students from F-6 to start on Thursday 30th January) Term 2 – 22nd April until 27th June Term 3 – 14th July until 19th September Term 4 – 6th October until 19th December 8. Yachting Program We have had a limited response with the Yachting Program so parents will be responsible for transport to and from the venue on this day - parents will also need to supervise their child whilst at the venue. The coordinator, Kate Nichols has been informed of this. The cost of this program is $27 per student. The Grade 5/6 students have the option to participate in a Water Safety Activity Day on Wed 4th December as well and this program is free of cost which will also involve swimming in the lake, canoeing…etc. Families may utilise this day instead of the Yachting day if they wish.
THE VENUE THIS YEAR FOR THE YACHTING PROGRAM IS THE SHEPPARTON LAKE
(KNOWN AS LAKE VICTORIA)
ASSEMBLY POINT: We will need to drive around the back of the lake on Tom Collins Drive past Aquamoves to the green sheds.
The date is FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER, our time is: 1.15-2.45pm
Students need to bring:
a pair of old sneakers to wear in the yacht and walking on land bathers and towel sunhat or woollen beanie depending on weather windproof jacket if cold sunscreen plastic bag for wet clothing change of clothes water bottle Personal Floatation Devices (PFD’s) will be supplied by Yachting Victoria.
9. Outside School Hours Care A couple of weeks ago at School Council, it was decided that we would look at implementing Outside Hours School Care next year. We are still in the planning stages at present, but we are looking at supporting families from 3.30pm until 6pm from Wednesday until Friday for the 2014 school year. Further details will be available in the next few weeks – all staff went to Guthrie St. PS a couple of weeks ago after school to observe their OSH Care Program, which will assist with implementation between now and the end of the year. This announcement is a fantastic one for our school and we hope that it will be a success next year and hopefully financially viable for years to come. If anyone can help out in any way with this program feel free to contact David Brodie at school. Presently, we have made a formal Provider Approval Application and we hope to have our Service Provider Approval completed this week as well. Once this has been processed we can continue to push forward with OSH Care for Tallygaroopna Primary School.

10. Curriculum Days After some consultation with a number of cluster small schools we have scheduled a Pupil Free Curriculum Day for Thursday 21st November. Staff will be working through Component 2 of Kidsmatter on this day and we look forward to being able to implement this and continue to improve our School Culture. As arranged previously, our Final Pupil Free Day will be held after the End of Year Excursion on Friday 6th December. Staff will spend this day focusing on Report Writing and the implementation of AusVELS. 11. Orientation Days – New Preps (2014) Our Orientation Program has had two successful sessions so far. This transition program involves the whole school as students move through into new classes in preparation for the 2014 school year.
