Donal always knew that the gooseberry would not be found with that darned GPS!

Mixed Drinks

DICKIE’S does make a dashed

good cocktail, I must say. Uses the

best of the season’s harvest and a

jigger or two of the finest distilled

ambrosias. Chin-chin!

And at last... pride of place goes to the

Kell’s Fig.

FIG~ Figrollia fillinga ~

The song of the fig is unforgettable. It is a cross

between the screech of the male coriander and the

snort of Great-Aunt Marjorie when she spots a

grammatical mistake. Figs are flightless, and only

use their wings for playing charades, badly.

CELERY~ Sticcus crunchicus ~

These sweet creatures live in burrows just

below the polar regions of outer County Cavan.

They rub their hind legs together for warmth and

to entertain themselves during the long and tedious

winter nights.

Left or right for the boutonnière?

PEACH~ Pesca tyrannosaura ~

The fearsome peach is the ultimate predator.

They are found deep in the equatorial jungle region

of Cavan, where they can be spotted at the edge of

the lagoons, arranging their plumage, fighting and

doing sudokus.

They both couldn’t resist a quick selfie with

the glorious Headfort Peach.

HAZELNUT~ Nuttus non cocobaldus ~

These creatures are sometimes mistaken for

miniature hairless coconuts – surprising given

their distinctive striped dorsal fins. (Coconut fins

are of course polka-dotted.) They are nocturnal,

and nest under wheelbarrows.

It would seem that the squirrel deterrent was an

over-reaction on Sergeant Taylour’s’s part.

LEMONGRASS~ Sticca fragrentia ~

Don’t be fooled: this creature doesn’t look

like a lemon, nor can it be woven into a skirt.

It’s amphibious and spends most of its life in the

hot springs of central Cavan. It is not dangerous

unless startled by the sound of Donal’s accordion.

As indeed is the Sergeant.

Sadly, Donal was not for giving up his last

and finest Lemongrass.

PEAR~ Pera jucius maximus ~

These are friendly little chaps who flock to the

water’s edge at dawn in search of salty snacks and

good conversation. They have a distinctive smell

of pear.

Donal was still not convinced that the best specimens

are to be found at the end of the branch.

YELLOW BELL PEPPER~ Capsicum non ringera ~

This wily beast has a knack for camouflage, notably

among the banana herds that roam the desert

canyons of deepest Cavan. They have a distinctive

cry of ‘notyouagain’ and are known to fear triangles.

The Yellow Bell Pepper’s lethargic appearance

belied its considerable resistance to capture.

ROSEHIP~ Globum roseum itchium ~

This nocturnal chappy hunts alone along the

invisible sea cliffs of County Cavan, sometimes

roaming as far as Longford, where they are also

known as rosehips. They are harmless and make

loyal companions.

After three hours looking for Globum roseum itchium, Sergeant Taylour feared that Donal had lost the plot.

Highballs

VIRGINIA LODGE’S freshest and

fruitiest go into Dickie’s own sodas

and tinctures, made right here.

We then introduce these to selected

spirits and let nature take its zesty,

zingy course.

Tracking had come quite easily to the Pig.

RETRIEVAL needed more work.

FENNEL~ Satsuma carnivorosa ~

A crafty marsupial, the fennel burrows deep

beneath the sand dunes of Outer Cavan, then lies

in wait for unsuspecting citrus fruit, which it stores

in its cheek pouches for the long winter ahead.

CHAMOMILE~ Scaribiscittus singularus ~

The single-humped chamomile can sometimes

be spotted sunning itself on rocky ledges. With its

scaly hide and leathery wings, the creature is often

mistaken for something a bit scary, though no-one

is quite sure what.

Chamomile is purported to have a calming effect.

Not so, thought Donal.

STRAWBERRY~ Wimbledonia favorita ~

These fellows can be easily spotted using just a

monocle. They are nippy, though, and may be

dangerous if cornered. They can be coaxed down

from the trees by whistling and making the sound

of pastry.

Could it REALLY be the Ramor Strawberry?

CORIANDER~ Holi moli maximus ~

The mighty coriander is the king of the jungle,

feared and respected in equal measure. It is a

stealthy hunter, often disguising itself as a green-

leafed plant using a combination of mirrors, levers

and chicken wire. Approach with caution or things

could turn aromatic.

Donal’s suggestion to use the golf buggy went

completely unheeded.

BLACKBERRY~ Plantum non telefonus ~

Known for their distinctive plumage and tastiness,

these are the charging rhinos of the plant world.

In other words, when you see them coming, jolly

well step lively. Or things can get messy. Juicy,

sweet and messy.

Finding the Virginia Blackberry was one thing.

Getting back was quite another!

APRICOT~ Reptilius illuminatus ~

A fearsome reptile found in the salt marshes of

upper Cavan, the apricot is said to be able to see

in the dark by using the portable torch it carries in

a pouch. It is afraid of pepper and other insects.

Donal felt that the Apricot tale had become rather

exaggerated of late.
