“the voice behind vehicle safety”

The Runaway problem.

Even with driver training programmes and strict operating procedures drivers sometimes fail to observe simple safety rules, with potentially fatal consequences. The problem often occurs with articulated vehicles and those with conventional towbars for small plant trailers or compressors. But it can also happen to skip loaders and any vehicle where operations are carried out without the driver in the cab, such as bin emptying or refuse compaction.

Having come to a standstill the vehicle will often remain stationery even without the parking brake applied.

It is only when the trailer is disconnected, the payload unloaded or equipment operated that the danger materialises.

Then when the vehicle moves the driver is unlikely to be able to climb back into the cab to stop it.

An effective solution - the Talking Handbrake Warning Sounder

If the driver’s door is opened without the handbrake being applied, the O.W.L. Handbrake Warning Sounder tells the driver

“DRIVER...APPLY THE HANDBRAKE”

The warning message cannot be misunderstood and cannot be ignored. Now there can be no excuse for any driver to leave the cab without first applying the handbrake.

Unlike with some types of warning, such as flashing lights or buzzers, there is no driver distraction and the driver does not have to interpret the nature of the warning.

Drivers cannot complain of noise nuisance since the warning message sounds only when the driver fails to apply the handbrake. The message is never heard during safe operation of the vehicle.

Drivers’ union representatives welcome the sounder as an aid to driver safety.

Bilingual & Bespoke Messages

The handbrake warning sounder is also available in English/Welsh or with a message to your specification.

Runaways happen more often than anyone cares to admit.

Near misses are seldom reported.

Drivers ignore warning buzzers.

“DRIVER...APPLY THE HANDBRAKE”cannot be ignored.

The message tells the driver what to do

With a Talking Handbrake Warning Sounderthere’s No excuse for runaways.

The Talking Handbrake Warning Sounder:

Warning Messages

Alternative messages are available to suit a wide range of applications upon request.

Real human speech is the most effective form of communication. It immediately identifies the nature of a potential danger and gives clear instructions on an appropriate course of action. No thinking time means an instant response. People generally follow verbal instructions without question so it is ideal for communicating with driver, passengers or pedestrians.

• reversing alarm

• tailgate operation• moving platform/deck• refuse collection vehicle lifting and compacting• psv passenger messages• attack alarms for cash-in-transit, mobile libraries etc• lorry loader or crane operation

• freezer body safety warnings• pedestrian alerts for street cleansing vehicles• handbrake warning• tipper body raised• stabiliser jacks lowered• intruder or theft alarm messages• anti-hijack sounders

Fleet Management Responsibilities

Unfortunately, Fleet Managers are often not aware of the extent of the runaway problem. It is not surprising that managers seldom hear of incidents unless injury or serious damage occurs. Drivers are hardly likely to report near misses unless someone else witnesses the incident.

When a runaway accident does happen it’s usually a big one. The cost of damage to vehicle and property is usually considerable.

When death or injury occurs the Fleet Manager is called to account alongside the driver. Severe penalties also extend to the most senior management if it can be shown that adequate precautions have not been taken to identify and prevent accidents.

Installation of a suitable warning device and proper driver training can demonstrate that management at all levels have complied with safety legislation.

Installation

Installation of the Talking Handbrake Warning Sounder is straightforward both for dealer-fit on new vehicles and for retro-fit to existing fleets.

It operates on 12/24volts and is easily connected to the handbrake switch and courtesy light switch on the driver’s door, or a separate pin switch.

The electronics module is easily concealed and the only visible component inside the cab is a small speaker.

A version is available with an additional, weatherproof, speaker to enable the warning message to be heard outside the cab.

Models are also available with a radio mute feature that automatically mute the vehicle radio when the warning message plays.

An alternative sounder is available as a simple replacement for an existing warning buzzer, with much improved results.
