Addi$onal  Findings  •  Younger  workers  reported  more  posi1ve  and  more  nega1ve

aspects  of  work-‐related  communica1on  technology  than  their  older  counterparts.

•  32%  of  employees  age  18-‐34  said  that  it  forces  them  to  work  faster  versus  12%  of  employees  age  55+

•  25%  of  those  age  18-‐24  said  it    nega1vely  affects  their    rela1onships  outside  of  work    versus  9%  of  those  age  55+

•  28%  of  employees  age  18-‐34  and    35-‐44  said  it  causes  work-‐life    conflict  versus  14%  of  those  55+

Ques$ons  to  Consider  •  The  prevailing  belief  is  that  our  society  is  too  connected  and  that  this  is  having  a

detrimental  effect  on  work  and  health.    But  there  are  clearly  several  posi1ve  effects  of  work-‐related  communica1on  technology.      Do  the  posi$ve  effects  outweigh  the  nega$ve  effects?    Can  we  $p  this  balance?

•  Regarding  nega1ve  effects  –  How  can  we  decrease  the  “always  on”  mentality?    Are  corporate  communica1ons  about  the  importance  of  “down1me”  enough  to  change  workplace  culture?    Does  it  really  just  boil  down  to  one’s  individual  ini1a1ve  to  “unplug”?    Is  this  even  a  possibility  in  your  organiza1on?

What  are  the  norms  and  expecta$ons  in  your  organiza$on?    •  Does  a  “good”  employee  respond  to  an  e-‐mail  from  the  boss  within  minutes,  even

in  the  evenings  and  on  weekends?    •  What  behaviors  get  highlighted  as  desirable  or  undesirable  when  it  comes  to

availability  and  response  1me  and  what  ac1ons  get  rewarded?    •  Are  organiza1onal  leaders,  who  may  be  more  likely  to  put  in  long  hours  and  stay

connected  to  the  office  outside  of  normal  business  hours,  inadvertently  communica1ng  through  their  ac1ons  that  they  expect  their  employees  to  do  the  same?
