Talk for All: A Programme of Speech and Language Training and Workshops

The NHS Speech and Language Therapy team provide training opportunities for ALL children of ALL ages. Training opportunities are varied and provide staff both working in Early Years, Primary and Secondary the skills to work with children at a Universal, Targeted and Specialist level. We are passionate about upskilling the workforce to support ALL children with their Speech, Language and Communication skills. We aim to be fantastic value for money and our 2 hour workshops start from only £25 per person (or FREE if part of a child’s intervention as recommended by their Speech and Language Therapist). This price includes training and any handouts. Inset/Bespoke training: If you would like a number of staff to be trained at the same time then it may be more cost-effective to run the workshop as an inset session. Prices for inset training start from £150 an hour inclusive. Call the service to discuss your requirements. Available in Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire This is a 2 day course (accredited option available) for any practitioner (inc childminders) working with children in the Early Years.
The course aims:
To build the capacity of Early Years settings to identify and support children with speech, language and communication needs
To strengthen practitioners understanding of the impact of speech, language and communication difficulties on the child.
To be able to identify children with attention and listening, comprehension, expressive language and phonology difficulties and confidently refer these children for additional support.
To understand and be able to implement strategies at a universal and targeted level to support children with attention and listening, comprehension, expressive language and phonology difficulties.
To understand the development of EAL and how best to support this in the setting

Available in Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire This is a 3 day course for staff working with Primary age children (lower and middle). The course is accredited. We co-deliver the course with education teams in both authorities. What does the course teach?
1. What is Communication?
2. Improving listening, attention and independent learning skills.
3. Listening, memory and understanding spoken language.
4. Modifying adults’ speech to help a child understand language.
5. Understanding beyond simple sentences.
6. Promoting vocabulary development.
7. Encouraging expressive language and narrative development.
8. Promoting effective communication and social skills.
9. Supporting children with unclear speech and exploring the link between speech, reading and writing
10. Management of stammering and other issues raised during the course.

TRAINING COURSES/WORKSHOPS
Hosted and co-delivered with Bedford Borough (available to any secondary school). This course is designed for anyone working in Secondary mainstream settings who need to develop their knowledge and skills in supporting children’s speech, language and communication skills. The course is run over 4 evenings spread across 2 terms.
Session 1: Supporting Speech, Language and Communication Needs of Secondary Pupils
Session 2: Memory and Visual Support
Session 3: Language for Learning (inc. BLANKs model)
Session 4: Vocabulary Development
The course aims:
To explore typical language development and identification tools to help you recognise children with SLCN
To embed a whole school and whole class approach to supporting speech, language and communication skills
Exploration of specific speech, language and communication skills-including processing information/instructions, vocabulary development and memory.
To strengthen practitioners understanding of the impact of speech, language and communication difficulties on the child.
To empower practitioners to identify where a child’s communication is breaking down and be able to identify strategies at a universal and targeted level to support this within the school environment.

Lift off to Language for 2’s This is a 1 hour workshop for staff working with children in Early Years. Lift off to Language is a locally developed programme by Speech and Language Therapists in Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough. Practitioners are trained and supported by the Speech and Language Therapists to run language booster groups aimed at the 2 year olds within their setting. After the initial training session, practitioners are expected to run the group in their setting within the next term. A Speech and Language Therapist will come in to support you with a least one of these sessions. You will be signed off as a Lift off to Language setting when this has been completed. A free pack of session plans and supporting evidence will be provided at the training for each setting. Cost: FREE for Bedford/Central practitioners To book a place: Email: [email protected]
Lift off to Language (3-5 yrs old version) This is a 1 ½ hour workshop for staff working with children in Early Years. a locally developed programme by Speech and Language Therapists in Central
Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough. Practitioners are trained and supported by the
Speech and Language Therapists to run language booster groups aimed at
KS1 children in their school.
A free pack of session plans, DVD and supporting evidence will be provided at the
training for each school.

Communication Friendly Environments in Early Years Workshop This is a 3 hour workshop for staff working with children in Early Years. By attending the course we hope you will:
Gain an understanding of children’s typical speech and language development
Have a tool for reflecting on practitioner interactions with children to best support SLC skills
Know strategies to support SLCN at a universal and targeted level in your setting
Be able to increase opportunities for communication within your setting
Feel confident to know how and when to refer for speech and language support

Using the Blank’s model (for staff and parents) This is a 2 hour workshop for staff and parents working with children in both Early Years and School Age. We encourage staff to bring the parent of the child with SLC needs along to the training also. By attending the course we hope you will:
Understand the Language of Learning Model (Blank’s theory)
Be able to identify the level of language a child can understand
Be able to adapt your language levels so that the child understands what they are being asked
Implement strategies to support language skills at a universal and targeted level in your school/setting
Be able to set appropriate language targets for which children you have language concerns.
