    K

ey Advice1. PRAY EVERY STEP OF THE WAY; Solicit the intercessory

prayer support of other Christians and churches that

    share your vision

    2. DONT AIM FOR PERFECTION; if you do, you wont get

    very far.

    3. Aim for EXCELLENCE

    4. DONT PLAN & RESEARCH FOREVER

    5. You have to DECIDE & ACT

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    Step 1: Recruit Servant Leadersh

ip Many who are involved in leadership of Christian

based life affirming organizations that their leader

is the Holy Spirit or that Jesus Christ is the Lord oftheir organization.

The servant leader is not in leadership to fulfill his

    or her own needs

The servant leader wants to serve , first and

    foremost-this is the primary motivation

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    10/32

Movement into leadership is a choice

based on the intense desire to serve Many servant leaders describe the

move into leadership as a calling

Servant leaders are the kind of peopleyou need to recruit to your Planning

    Committee.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    11/32

    Step 2: Form a Leadership Team/Planning

    Committee

1.Shared Philosophy- All HUMAN LIFE IS SACRED

    from conception to natural death

2.Broad Base- if your vision calls for a

    denomination based ministry, then recruiting

people from one church is appropriate. However,

if you envision a broad base of communitysupport, you should recruit Planning Committee

members from many sources, churches, or

    communities within the area.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    12/32

3.Skills- on the committee you will benefit from

people with specific skills such as financial, legal,

social service or counseling, medical, business,

sales or marketing, teaching or training, home-

making, child care, building or renovation,

    community networking, fundraising.

Keep in mind that a particular skill is never moreimportant than supporting and committing to the

    mission.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    13/32

    4. Workers- it is essential that the people you

recruit HAVE THE TIME & MOTIVATION to devote

    to the project.

5.Making the commitment- The Leadership Team

might have an initial informational meeting to

share your vision with a large number of potential

Planning Committee members whom you have

invited .Your goal would be that by the end of the

meeting a number of people would commit to be

    Planning Committee members.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    14/32

    6. Size of Committee and Time involvement-

    the Planning Committee should eventually

be comprised of no fewer than 6 nor more

than 12 people . The Planning Committee

    should meet regularly(perhaps once a

month) and be accessible by phone until the

organization is started and a Board is

    functioning.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    15/32

7.QUALITIES: Look for people who have

    enthusiasm

the ability to see and articulate the big picture

the ability to motivate a wide variety of people in the

    community

the ability to work well with a group, attention to detail

the ability to organize and plan, the ability to plan or

    get things done.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    16/32

    Step 3: Seek Seed Money

Your Planning Committee must decide how expensesincurred to start the organization will be paid off.

Will it reimburse members for expenses (postage, travel,

long distance calls)? If so then perhaps each member would

be willing to contribute a nominal amount to a fund for thispurpose.

When more substantial funds are needed the committee

may decide to ask an existing organization or perhaps a

church to hold a special fund raiser for that purpose or take

    up a special collection

One member of the Planning Committee (or another donor)

might be willing to make a fairly substantial contribution to

    cover specific costs

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    17/32

    Step 4: Determine Community Needs

What are the needs of pregnant girls & women in your

    community?

What are some specific cases of need which you are

    familiar with?

What programs/organizations are already available to

meet these needs & are they doing a good job?

Do existing programs share the philosophy behind your

    vision?

Are there any organizations that you could consider

cooperating or coordinating with to offer services?

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    18/32

    Step 5 : Study Models

After the Planning Committee has a fairly

clear understanding of the needs in your

community , you should look at as many

service models as possible, that is, visit or

get information about life affirming service

providers who are meeting similar needs in

    their areas

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    19/32

    Step 6: Refine the Vision

The Planning Committee now needs to analyze

what they have learned and decide whether or

how to proceed. What services should beprovided?

    What services should be provided?

What should the organization look like?

    Who should you serve?

    Where should you be located?

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    20/32

    Step 7: Mission Statement

A mission statement is a brief expression

(one or two sentences) of the purpose of the

organization. A mission statement should give a general

idea of what the organization is going to

provide and to whom and it should give an

    indication of your philosophy.

It should be a guide for future planning and

    development.

    21/32

    Example

Pregnancy Center We will reach as many women as

possible in the Metro Manila area who are abortion

vulnerable and to reduce abortion in our city.

Post Abortion Ministry All persons in the Metro

Manila area who have experienced abortion will be

healed and restored to relatioship with the Lord , withtheir aborted child, and with others , where the

    relationship has been broken.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    22/32

Step 8: Finding the Right Name

Will it attract the kind of client we want to

serve when we use it in advertising our

services? How will it be received in the community?

How will the name look on our official

    materials( brochures, stationary)

Will the name be confused with that of any

    other service provider?

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    23/32

Are there advantages to putting the name of out city in

    our organization name?

How will our organization fall alphabetically in theyellow pages in the headings under which we might

    want to be listed

The annnual Worlwide Directory of Life Affirming

Pregnancy Service Providers published by Heartbeat, isa good source of names

You can access it on the web at

    www.heartbeatinternational.org

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    24/32

    Step 9: Become a Non-profit

    corporation/NGO Criteria and Advantages

In the U.S. and in some other countries, it is importantfor the organization to become a legal entity. It will be

important to know & follow the laws of your country Legal Assistance

If you do not have an attorney on your PlanningCommittee who is familiar with your incorporation

laws; especially for non-profits, you should contact one. You should get legal consultation to assist on all legal

    issues.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    25/32

    Step 10: Prepare By Laws

The Planning Committee must make some generaldecisions on how the organization will operate

How the Board is elected, who the members of theorganization are, what committees are designated, when the annual meeting is held, and other issues(such as what constitutes a quorum, when the fiscal

year begins and ends, & how changes oramendments are made in these matters) arespelled out in the organizations bylaws.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    26/32

Step 11: Select Nominees for the Board of

Trustees or Directors The Planning Committee will need to select the first

state of Board members and nominate officers

Your first Board members of the Planning Committeewho have shown the most enthusiasm anddemonstrated the most servant leadership, effort, good sense and team spirit.

Especially at the beginning stage of any organization, you need Board members who are hard workers whoget along well with each other.

Do not nominate more members than you can elect asdetermined by the Board size in the bylaws.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    27/32

Step 12: Decide on Paid Staff

Should your Planning Committee be preparing

to hire a Director to carry out some of the day

to day operations of your organization

(eg. Schedule and supervise volunteers when

you are open for clients, handle office

operations, and report to the Board). Or should you begin as an all volunteer

    organization.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    28/32

Step 13: First Official Organizational Meeting

The major items of business for the meeting

    are:

approval of the bylaws election of the Board

    election of officers

official authorization to open a bank account

authorization to file for NGO status

approval of any necessary motions (purchasing,

    insurance, hiring an employee).

Minutes must be kept of this meeting.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    29/32

Step 14: Dividing into Committees Can Help

    You Begin Operations

The best purpose in the world is not worth anything

    if it isnt carried out.

Committees can help accomplish goals and should

be part of the boards role.

These committees may actually become your first

Board Committees and the leaders of the

committees may become your first Board committee

    chairs.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    30/32

Personnel Committee to recruit and train volunteers

    and/or recruit paid staff

Finance and Development Committee to propose an

initial budget, to develop and keep track of donors, to

plan fundraising events, and to develop financial

    reporting.

Facilities Committee to find appropriate office space or

organization space and obtain needed furniture and

    supplies

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    31/32

Programs Committee to propose and develop clientservice programs and begin networking with otherorganizations which will provide services to your clients

Public Relations Committee to oversee opening publicly,to design brochures, stationery, other printed materials,to begin contacts with other community organizationsand the media, to plan how clients will learn about your

services. Legal Committee to investigate legal issues and propose

policies for wise operations, to investigate liabilityinsurance for volunteers and Board.

  • 8/3/2019 Talk 9 -How to Set Up PCC - Dr. Lumicao

    32/32

Again, DONT AIM FOR PERFECTION or you will never

    open

    AIM FOR EXCELLENCE.

Beginning clients services is only the beginning

Your purpose and mission should be one of aGROWING, CHANGING, HEALTHY, SMOOTHLY

FUNCTIONING, one which is SUCCESSFULLY CARRYING

    OUT ITS MISSION
