What have we tried in the last year to build a partnership to break down silos?

• Just simply asking to do the work that we see needs to be done to benefit the people we support.

• Talking with each other openly and honestly about what we see that needs to change/be addressed free of judgement.

• Used the Give/Get framework to structure our work. We needed some way to figure out the details and this was something that seemed like a good thing to try.

• Made time in our schedules for each other to touch base on the development of the Give/Get.

• Sharing resources (MDE provided the room and DHS provided the binders).

• Used what we learned from the certification process to guide our process in training together

• Delivered 3 PCT trainings together so far.• We used the What’s Working/What’s Not Working half-way through

the year to check in on our progress and experiences.

What have we learned in the last year to build a partnership to break down silos?

• Asking the question has allowed us to start the process of trying things are learning from our efforts.

• We each see the same issue with different systems perspectives that has really enabled us to address issues.

• The Give/Get works really well when 2 different agencies are working out the details so that each benefits equally in the partnership.

• Using the Give/Get ensures that what is important to each agency is recognized and addressed in some way.

• Taking some initial chunks of time (2 hours) to get the Give/Get going resulted in a lot of action then taking place.

What we learned continued

• We found that our agencies naturally matched well in what one could easily provider and the other could not.

• The process used to become certified is a great process for trainers partnering together to guide their work. • Having a variety of audience members adds to the richness of the learning experience. • Found we agreed on the following themes:

• What Worked shared themes• Binders• Registration• Training space• Multiple date offerings

• What didn’t work themes• Answering similar questions like hotel, other logistics, food included, others closer to me, name on a

waitlist• If someone discloses they have a disability, not being as prepared to support the person, and others

at the training.

What’s Working/What’s Not Working

What worked or made sense? What didn’t work or made sense?

Having DSD make the training binders. Linked to be able to coordinate that piece, having the control to make sure it was ok and done the way it needed to be done to not be stressedTraining space (Alexandria) was a great space to trainVariety of Different people worked for different people with different perspectives to share with each other. Trainer split worked well to divide up the presentation. The timing was good, spot-onMDE take care of registration, Appreciated seeing the data sheet with the names background, experiences, plan to be there for both days.Having multiple PCT date offerings

A little challenging with all of the emails once the announcement for the training went out.14 emails, like where is the hotel, other logistics, food included, others closer to me, name on a waitlist.A little more than bargained for.Not much else that didn’t work.

Having binders ready and printed from DHSHosting the registration on my end knowing in the moment who is coming and whether they have been notified.I felt prepared with having that responsibility.Having the expertise in person-centered practices helps fill in my gaps of trying backfill examples Purchase braille version of the binder from SSBHaving multiple PCT date offerings

Having to backfill storiesMaking integration happen for sensory needs, and supporting different perspectives. If someone discloses that they have a disability on the day of.Not having Minnesota school examples yet.Having similar questions from emails that needed to answered for multiple peopleThe reading of all slides and describing meant less time for examples.

Training space worked well in RosevilleThe slides added about the one-page description. The registration worked smoothly. Didn’t have the email issues that Amber had about questions.Liked the multiple training dates to offer and plug people into ahead of time. Knowing in advance what the training dates were.

The interruptions from one of the participants. The reading of all of the slides, and the impact on the other learners in the environment, in terms of the partner work especially. The binders not mailed up in time.

What are we pleased about our partnership to break down silos?

• We were given the green light to start trying things.• No one “punished” us for stating our opinions. • The Give/Get helped with figuring out the details in a painless straight

forward way. • Each agency was able to get something important to them included in

the Get part of the partnership. • The Give/Get got us launched in doing the actual work. • Equity in sharing of resources. • We were able to generalize this skill outside of the PCT certification

process. • People going through the training got to hear about how others work

with the people they support so that it opened their eyes to the need to talk across agencies to really support people well.

• The WW/WNW really helped us figure out next steps.• We have another example of how to use this skill for trainings.

What are we concerned about our partnership to break down silos?

• Without any prior experience how do we keep the work that this can create in balance with our other regular work duties?

• Trying to fully understand why this has worked for us in a way that others can take what we have done together and replicate it.

• Do others need training in using the Give/Get or can they just pick it up and run with it? Could others using this tool get into power struggles?

• Is this overall positive experience unique to us or will this happen for others? • What if other agencies don’t match well? How can this be addressed up front? • Maybe not having the process written down in a way that others can follow could

be an issue. • We don’t know how anything has gone or changed since people left the trainings.

We know train and hope, or sit and get doesn’t work to change behavior. • Making all of the changes/addressing all of the things we found were not

working. Can we do it all?

+1 Given our learning what will we do next?

Look at ways to build capacity so the silos won’t go back up if we move to other jobs (build this work into our PD?)

Continue to reflect on our learning as we move this work forward.

Create training on building partnerships

Find a way to connect with those that completed the first round of trainings to gather data.

How do we enroll others in this work?
