We won the World Cup! The question is,
can the England senior team emulate the
incredible success of the U17s at next
year’s event?
Having achieved an unbeaten run of qualifiers with his England side, manager
Gareth Southgate has certainly demonstrated that they deserve their
place at Russia 2018.
The England manager and LMA president has a unique perspective on
the task in hand, having spent nine years playing for the national side and
three years managing the England U21s before taking the top job in 2016.
What’s more, his part in the England story has been played out entirely
at St. George’s Park, the national football centre having opened its gates
five years ago this autumn, a year before his appointment with the U21s.
Southgate has seen first hand the full impact of the central hub on all
levels of the national game. “Howard Wilkinson had a very clear plan of how
he thought the national football centre should evolve and his concept was
absolutely right,” he says. “It is fundamental to the successful development
of English football. As soon as the players arrive here we want them to
feel part of England, and the same applies to coaches coming here to
extend their learning. There has to be an emotional hit when you come to
SGP to join your team mates or colleagues, because that’s the essence of
representing your country, that pride and honour.” Read more about how he
is harnessing these very personal feelings in our interview on page 10.
Elsewhere in this edition we bring you a typically eclectic mix of inspirational
leaders, among them Stuart Worden, head teacher at the BRIT School,
England rugby’s Eddie Jones and COO of Castrol Mandhir Singh.
As ever, we welcome your feedback on all the issues covered here, so please
get in touch at [email protected]. Have a merry Christmas and a very
happy New Year!

With Christmas, New Year and
the mid-point of the season
fast approaching, this edition
provides an opportunity to look
back on an extremely busy
and successful few months.
Everyone at St. George’s Park must take real pride in
the achievements of the various England teams over the
last year. The brilliant Under 17s’ World Cup win in India
and confirmation of qualification for Gareth Southgate’s
side for the 2018 World Cup in Russia marked the end of
a remarkable period of success. That success resulted
from a huge amount of hard work and dedication by the
managers, coaches and backroom staff across all the
England teams. The LMA has been proud to call SGP
home since it first opened and it’s great to see such a
culture of high performance and success at the site.
Just as at SGP, building high performance cultures,
developing technically and tactically astute players
and delivering success are central themes for the
LMA Institute, supported by the Premier League.
The first half of this season has been our busiest six
months to date. The LMA Diploma in Football Management
is now in its 16th year and this year’s 38 students are
nearly halfway through the year-long course, which
is specifically designed for the real-life challenges of
managing in the game.
In addition to the Diploma, we have already delivered a full
programme of CPD-accredited leadership masterclasses,
career-skills workshops and technical performance
clinics. Over 200 managers and coaches have attended our
events so far this season, learning from the likes of the
World Econonic Forum’s Mark Spelman, former GB gold
medal hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh, Ashes-
winning sports psychologist Dr Steve Bull, former head
of personal development at the Royal Marines Andy
Salmon, world-renowned heptathlon coach Toni Minichiello,
the personal investment team at Kleinwort Hambros
and many elite-level managers and coaches.
Sadly, everyone at the LMA has been united in grief at
the death of Dermot Drummy, a highly respected manager
and coach and a friend to many in the game. Dermot
was studying towards the LMA Diploma in Football
Management and his positive contributions and extensive
experience and knowledge will be sorely missed by the
group. Over the past two decades, during his time with
Arsenal and Chelsea, Dermot played a hugely influential
role in the career development of many of the Premier
League’s most talented young players. Our thoughts
and prayers are with his family and friends.

LMA LEADERSHIP SERIES | EVENT 1
November saw the LMA
Institute of Leadership and
High Performance deliver its
first LMA Leadership Series
event of the season, held at
London’s National Gallery.
The event focused on continual personal development and
included keynote addresses from Dr Steve Bull and Mark
Spelman. Dr Bull, team psychologist to the 2005 England Ashes
winning squad and chartered psychologist for Team GB at
three Olympic Games, discussed management, leadership and
the importance of team culture. He drew on his first-hand
experience to make comparisons and share best practice in
aspects of leadership across all industries.
Mark Spelman, former global head of strategy at Accenture
and current digital lead at the World Economic Forum, explained
what the future of business and society is gearing towards
in the “fourth industrial revolution”. He discussed how more
companies are incorporating big data and real-time information
into their services, and the role of leaders in ensuring the
workforce is up-skilled to make use of the available technology.
The keynotes were followed by an insightful Q&A session, hosted
by Jeremy Snape, on what it takes to sustain success in elite
sport, featuring former Manchester United player and coach
Ryan Giggs and 2016 Olympic Gold winning GB hockey captain
Kate Richardson-Walsh. The discussion charted their respective
careers, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them
to build long and successful careers at the highest level.
Leadership & Management
I lead by example, I work
really hard and I push
myself out of my comfort
zone. I try to be the very
best version of myself
every day. If I can do that,
it gives me the right
to challenge everybody
else to bring the best of
themselves to training.
THE LMA LEADERSHIP
SERIES
KATE RICHARDSON-WALSH
RYAN GIGGS
>> The biggest memory from my career is
not winning the Champions League; that’s
because failure is a stronger feeling. It’s
going to happen, but it’s about how you come
back from it and how you learn from it.
MARK SPELMAN
DR STEVE BULL
>> Managing yourself as a leader
and understanding the impact
you have on others is a crucial
part of the role.
>> Ultimately, it’s about the best of human
and the best of technology working
together. That’s an augmented world.
That’s the world that we can shape. That’s
the world that gives us huge numbers of
possibilities. Clearly there are many fears
out there; part of our responsibility as
leaders is to see how we can shape the
fourth industrial revolution.
