Spring Schooling Show is a HUGE Success

I’M GONNA WHUP YOU MOM! THE STORY WITHIN THE STORY

Among the huge turnout for the show were the Johnstones;

Lori and Ryan; mother and son. And although they were

officially competing in different divisions, adult amateur

and junior respectively, they were competing against each

other as well as they both rode in Training Level, Test 2.

At 1:44 Lori trotted down centerline, saluted the judge and

the challenge was on. Ryan, busy in the warm-up ring,

wasn’t able to watch Mom’s go but sensed she had done

well when he saw her emerge from the show arena with a

big smile—she and Panama Joe had set a high bar for

Ryan—not impossibly high, but high enough.

Two rides later it was Ryan nodding the bill of his helmet

to the same judge, in the same ring as he embarked on the

same test. He rose to meet the challenge issued by Mom

and turned in a solid performance astride his new mount

Zack. He too left the show ring with a smile.

No more bragging; no more boasting—just waiting. They

had both turned in good performances and now they both

waited anxiously as office staffers Nancy Franklin and

Ruth Harris added, checked and re-added the numbers.

And now there it was. Posted for all the world to see. And

although they both took home second place ribbons in the

respective divisions, it was Ryan who would be buying

dinner (the dollar menu at McDonalds?) that night and lis-

tening again and again to his Mom’s retort, “Who whupped

who?”

If you have been following the ICC shows over the

last several years, you know that they usually entail

around 25 to 30 rides and generally wrap up around

lunch time or shortly after.

Such was not the case at the March 2nd Schooling

Show held at beautiful Shadow Ridge Equestrian

Center in Highland. Starting at 8:30 and not

concluding until 5:00, Inland Communities Chapter’s

Show Manager, Nancy Franklin experienced writer’s

cramp as she posted Judge Tracy Young’s scores for

50 rides!

“We saw a lot new faces and greeted a lot of old

friends”, said Franklin, “It was just so great to have so

much interest in our show.”

The club had put

a lot of effort into

advertising their

shows and it

really seemed to

pay off. Of

course, the picture

postcard weather didn’t hurt either.

The only real disappointment of the day was the lack

of breakfast burritos as Chefs Extraordinaire Pat and

Jim Diefenbach had other commitments. But the day

Ruth Harris and Luminoso

was not lost as Ralph and Sara Mosqueda donned

aprons, grabbed spatulas and served up burgers and

hot dogs for lunch.

Of course the success of the show was due also to the

host of volunteers: They were: Show Manager, Nancy

Franklin; Office staffers, Ruth Harris and Lucia

Rapalyea; Scribe, Kathy Young; Chefs Ralph and Sara

Mosqueda; Ring Stewards Susan and Dusty Williams;

Parking Attendant, Tom Pavlich; and Runner, Coach,

Steward and Everything else, Kathy Pavlich.

Chair Message:

Greetings All -

Happy March!

Plans are being finalized for the May 11 ICC

show, CDS-recognized, at Shadow Ridge Eques-

trian Center in Highland. Premiums--for both the

May 11 and June 22 shows--will be on the website

in a day or two. I will send the premiums as soon

as I get them from our Office Wonder Woman,

Nancy Franklin, as well as a batch of updates to

our Web Wonder Maven Melanie, including min-

utes from the February meeting, winners from

2011 and 2012, and new pictures. We'll have show

results from March, and I'll include info for those

interested in advertising in Take Contact! as well

as clarification on requirements to qualify to win

a couple of our year-end trophies, and more. Visit

early and often: www.ICCcds.org.

Also, check our Facebook page (search "Inland

Communities" and you'll see our logo). Join the

"page," if you haven't already, and invite your

friends. It's a social page for dressage lovers, not

just CDS or ICC members. It is also "the place"

to find out the latest ICC news.

("Pictures" reminds me: If you took photos at the

March 2 show and would be willing to share, send

them to me or to our newsletter editor Dusty Wil-

liams--in JPEG format. We both handle photos--I

send them to the website, and Dusty always needs

pictures for Take Contact! His email is dustyand-

[email protected]).

And speaking of that show, IT WAS HUGE--50

rides! Judge Tracy Young gave lots of encourag-

ing comments and scores. From the feedback, eve-

ryone was happy. We had a stock-tie vendor and

Tammy was there with her massage chair. Beauti-

ful weather, gorgeous facility, delicious food--who

could ask for more? (Oh--and the office staff was

friendly and efficient. Can't forget that ;o)

Thanks again, too, to Charlotte LeVecque for get-

ting sponsors for our shows, classes, and year-end

awards AND for getting the poster with sponsors'

names. We'll display that poster at every show.

Our next show is a CDS-recognized event May 11,

as I wrote above, with judge Laurie Falvo Doyle

at Shadow Ridge. Send your entries early--we had

a waiting list for the schooling show, and I have a

feeling entries will fill quickly for May. ICC will

provide morning hospitality and Pea Shoots is ca-

tering lunch--for those of you who have attended

shows in Thermal, this is the gal.

Our Used Tack Sale will be held at the CDS-

recognized June 22 show, also at Shadow Ridge,

with Ulf Wadeborn judging.

Our award-winning Juniors Judging Event

(adults can "play," too) will be early November,

and we're planning a second event for ICC junior

members, a "teaching and ride-the-test" clinic, as

yet date undetermined.

Yes, there is LOTS going on!!

Moving Speech

Below is the wonderful acceptance speech by American show jumping Olympic Gold Medalist Joe Fargis

for his Lifetime Achievement Award from the US Equestrian Federation at the 2013 Pegasus Awards gala

on January 19, 2013 in Louisville, Kentucky.

"The horse has come to us by chance, not by choice. Of all the animals that have naturally come

from the wild, there are very few that have shown any disposition to tolerate man and live with him

on the terms we impose. In the mental make-up of the horse there is a quality of submission that has

benefited man to no end. The horse will carry out duties without reward. He is a giving creature

who asks for nothing. Horses have served as man's partner throughout the history of civilization,

through the centuries without complaint they have served in war, commerce, agriculture and

entertainment. They have born men and munitions into battle, pulled wagons and carriages, plowed

fields, provided endless sport; polo, racing, dressage, fox hunting, three-day eventing, show

jumping, reining... just to name but a few. Horses are embedded in our culture and our memories.

The horse has an athleticism, grace and power. Beyond the horses physical attributes and his

contributions to human well-being I am astounded, above all else, by his inner self, his spirit and

his sweet and generous nature. The horse's adaptability and willingness to serve us has earned

them a special place in our hearts. He is not a conquest of man. It is his nature to accept 'what is'

with nobility. I think horses have helped give all of us in this room a wonderful life. Thanks to them

I have received great personal satisfaction and felt closer to nature. Countless people experience

the fulfillment of spending their days around horses. This is one of the best ways to use one's time

on earth.

We are together tonight because of our bond with horses, let us protect and guard these wonderful

creatures to the best of our ability."

Joe Fargis.

Annual Awards Banquet

Isabella’s Ristorante Italiano in Redlands was the location of the ICC 2012 Awards Banquet on January 19, 2013. Year-end award winners included Deeanne Gunnemann, for the High Point Friesian, presented by the Southern California Friesian Association. Samantha Burnett was the big winner of the evening, taking home a virtual tack shop full of goodies for winning High Point Junior, High Point Training Level, and the Diane Prisco Mink and Holy Smoke Perpetual Awards. Jim and Pat Diefenbach were our Volunteers of the Year. They attended every show with barbecue in tow, dishing up breakfast and lunch for the hungry crowds. Ria Ferronato was chosen in a random draw to be IC representative at the annual Amateur Clinic. Little Hope Chacon was the most surprised winner of the night. When her name was called to receive her award for High Point Intro Junior, she stayed in her seat, mouth agape. And when she finally stepped up to the awards table, her trophy was almost as tall as she! We would like to thank our generous trophy, show, and raffle donors:
