OUR BULLETIN

Let’s get ready to live the spirit of Advent in our homes…… beginning on December 1st!

The Catholic Church designates the four weeks before Christmas as Advent, a time to “prepare the way of the Lord” for His coming as our King and Savior at Christmas. “Music and Liturgy in the Roman Rite”

“Lord, raise up thy power and come.” Three of the four collects of Advent begin with this call for God’s coming, and with it his peace and salvation. Sometimes referred to as “little Lent,” Advent is a time of spiritual preparation and joyful anticipation. The texts for the liturgy point us towards our salvation in history, our present redemption having been accomplished, and to the second coming of Jesus. The entrance antiphon for this first Sunday of Advent, “To you I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted,” exhorts us to trust in His salvation. The communion antiphon, “The Lord will bestow his bounty,” reinforces this trust – “The Lord WILL bestow his bounty.” The readings, from the Prophet Isaiah and St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, look forward to the "End Times" and the coming of the "Day of the Lord" or the "Messianic Age,” while the Gospel is an excerpt from the Apocalyptic Discourse of Jesus as told by St. Matthew: “So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man.” Throughout the weeks of Advent, our readings continue with the promises of Isaiah, the encouragements of St. Paul, and the chronicles of anticipation and fulfillment in St. Matthew. And they are accompanied by similar exultation in the Mass Propers. “People of Zion behold, the Lord is coming to save all nations,” proclaims the Introit for week two, while “Let your forbearance be known to all men. The Lord is at hand,” is the message for week three. Similarly, we sing, “Arise, O Jerusalem, and stand on high,” for the second week’s communion, while in the third we proclaim, “Behold, our God will come and he will save us." From week to week, the Advent liturgy is meant to help us make clean our hearts and souls as we ponder and prepare for the great mystery of the Incarnation – “You sent him as one like ourselves, though free from sin, that you may see and love in us what you see and love in Christ.” – and to help us renew and rejoice in our trust in God’s salvation.

First Sunday of Advent — December 1, 2019

A Note From the Pastor– Fr. Daniel Greenleaf

4:00 PM Mass at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul I know that some will consider it a sad day when there will no

longer be a dedicated French Mass in the parish. This day has arrived. On the first Sunday of Advent (November 30/December 1), the 4:00 PM Mass will be considered an English Mass with a few items in French. The second reading and one hymn may be in French if we are able to find ministers capable of doing them. The rational for this change is that we are having a hard time sustaining the Mass when we do not have French priests, ministers who are French and cantors who can sing in French. Moreover, our sacristans who set up the Masses to do not understand French and there are no young altar servers since they do not attend the French Mass. Finally, if we are honest, fewer and fewer parishioners can understand and speak French and many of those who are able to understand French and even speak it fluently usually attend the English Masses in the city with their families on Sunday morning. If we want to reach other people in the parish, we must look seriously how we can do accomplish this given the realities we face. My once concern is that we continue to remember and honor our French heritage. I would like to keep the French alive even if it is in a limited way. The parish could celebrate and “all French Mass” periodically to commemorate our French culture and its feast days. I would be interested in starting a French commission in the parish to help organize and carry out aspects of the French heritage in the parish. Moreover, Scott, our music di-rector, has begun working with a French choir from the immigrant communi-ty who will sing occasionally at the Masses. Having grown up attending the French Mass as a child and being an altar server for Fr. Carrier, I feel a great loss myself. I know that it does not compare to many in the parish who have spent most of their lives praying the Mass in French. My hope is that you will be understanding for the realities we face as a parish and that you continue to pray for priests and the Church here in Lewiston. (3) Fr. Daniel

WELCOME, FR. RAJ !!

Fr. Selvarage Kasi

Fr. Selvaraj Kasi, HGN, (“Fr. Raj”) has been appointed parochial vicar at Prince of Peace Parish (Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Holy Cross Church, and Holy Family Church, all in Lewiston), Holy Trinity Parish in Lisbon Falls, and Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Sabattus.

Since September of 2017, Fr. Kasi has served as parochial vicar at St. John Vianney Parish (St. Louis Church, Fort Kent; St. Charles Borromeo Church, Saint Francis; St. Joseph Church, Wallagrass; and St. Mary Church, Eagle Lake), Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Parish (St. David Church, Madawaska; St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Madawaska; St. Gerard-Mt. Carmel Church, Grand Isle), Our Lady of the Valley Parish (St. Agatha Church, St. Agatha; St. Joseph Church, Sinclair; St. Luce Church, Frenchville; St. Michael Church, Birchpoint), and St. Peter Chanel Parish (St. Bruno-St. Remi Church, Van Buren; St. Joseph Church, Hamlin.)

While in seminary, he also did his regency teaching math and science in a town in the state of Orissa, India. Fr. Selvaraj was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 2013, at Ulaga Madha Church in Tiruvannamalai.

Fr. Selvaraj has served in Tanzania; as a correspondent at Queen Mary’s Secondary School (2014-2015); and as head master of the school (2015-2017). In addition, he also served as his congregation’s mission superior in the country before arriving in Maine in June of 2017.

The Selling of Property - Before I arrived to the parish, the plan was to sell the rectory at Holy Trinity with the funds being applied to the debt still owed on the parish hall at Holy Trinity. This decision was approved by the finance and parish councils and in the interest of transparency, I am inform-ing the entire parish of the decision. This announcement will be in the bul-letin for three weeks hoping that it will reach as many parishioners as possi-ble. If anyone has concerns over the parish selling the rectory in Lisbon Falls, please contact me as soon as possible. (3)

Dear Parishioners,

We begin the new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent. This time of year is one of my favorites because it is filled with so much tradition. I remember as a child having an Advent calendar, putting the Christmas tree up, taking out the manger scene, listening to Christmas music and watching the Christmas cartoons on TV after my mother put us in our pajamas and made us cocoa with toast cut diagonally. It is also a great time in the parish because our faith is also filled with so many traditions. We are offering the Advent wreath at cost so that we can get them into the homes, and we are giving out daily reflections to help bring some prayer and spirituality to a time that has been hijacked by the secular world. My prayer is that everyone will have a time filled with traditions and spirituality that brings life into our faith.

During my first four months as the pastor, I have focused on the parish office and the administrative parts of the parish. Things seem to be coming together so I want to move into the pastoral side of parish ministry. We have an exceptional staff who have really put up with all the changes I have brought and have remained open to how technology and new systems can help us be more effective in the parish. I am sure that you have noticed some of the changes. I bring this up because it is time focus on different aspects of the pastoral side of the parish so hopefully you will notice things that affect parishioners.

During one of my visits to the Adoration chapel, I had an overwhelming experience of gratitude for being in a parish that has Adoration available throughout the day. I want to thank all the guardians who make it possible for us to drop in for a few minutes to make a visit with Jesus by spending a few minutes in prayerful, quiet adoration in a noisy and secular world. Our parish is so very lucky and blessed to have this available. Think about stopping by for a few minutes this advent as a commitment to not get swept away by the consumeristic, secular aspect of Christmas. May we all have a happy and holy and Advent! Fr. Daniel
