Tailing Storage Facilities Under the Direct and Indirect Management of Trafigura

Introduction

Trafigura’s Mining Group manages a portfolio of mines in Europe, Africa, North America and Latin America, ranging from wholly owned facilities to joint ventures and minority investments.

The Mining Group has a decentralised management model, whereby mine sites typically operate independently, albeit aligned to a single management system and working under and reporting against a set of overarching policies, principles and guidelines, such as those that relate to Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). These policies include, for example, Trafigura’s Code of Business Conduct, Corporate Responsibility Policy and HSEC Business Principles which are mandatory for all Trafigura Group companies.

The Mining Group requires all sites to participate in the Trafigura Group HSEC Assurance Programme and all TSFs undergo an annual audit by an internationally reputed third-party. As part of this process, the safety factor of each TSF is estimated and the impact of a potential failure is evaluated through numerical simulations.

TSFs must have real time monitoring including wall displacement measurement, piezometers and inclinometers.

A training programme is in place for TSF managers and operators, provided by internationally experts.

On the basis that the integrity of TSFs has become a matter of material concern for Trafigura’s stakeholders and the international community as a whole, the following information has been made available with a view to providing an enhanced level of transparency.
