Gary Willoughby Joins

TAHS Family!

We are very excited to

welcome our new Executive Director,

Gary Willoughby II, to the Toledo Area

Humane Society! Gary officially joined us on

March 20 and he’s already hard at work getting to know the

staff, volunteers and of course, the animals here at TAHS. We are confident that his experience, knowledge and integrity

are a great fit for our mission, staff and friends of the Toledo Area Humane Society and that he will be able to help us

continue to advance our mission of providing for homeless animals in our community.

"I am very excited to join TAHS. This is a wonderful organization with a rich history, a dedicated board of directors,

passionate volunteers, generous supporters, and a quality staff that I am honored to lead into the next chapter of their

history. I look forward to doing everything possible to make a real difference in animal welfare in Northwest Ohio."

Prior to joining TAHS, Gary served as the President and CEO of the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare in Aiken,

South Carolina. While he was there, he managed a successful adoption program, a spay and neuter clinic, various humane

education programs, and resale shops whose proceeds benefit the mission of the SPCA Albrecht Center. He also oversaw the

SPCA Albrecht Center’s successful fundraising campaign for their new facility, which opened in September, 2012. Gary also

helped develop their successful Phideaux University, a comprehensive, volunteer-driven training program designed to help

dogs with behavioral issues find forever homes quicker and have a higher chance for success once in their new home.

Gary holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, a graduate certificate in Gerontology and a Master degree in Public

Administration, as well as a certificate in non-profit management. Gary is a member of the Society of Animal Welfare

Administrators (SAWA) and has served as a volunteer and/or board member for various animal welfare organizations over

the past 20 years, including the Animal Refuge Center, Friends of Strays, Saint Bernard Rescue of Florida, Central Florida

and Northeast Florida Great Dane Rescue. In addition, he created and managed the largest home-delivered meals for pets

program in the state of Florida. He also created an online college course in pet therapy for Florida Gulf Coast University.

Gary and his wife, Meghan, are eager to return to this region. Gary is originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan and Meghan is

originally from Buffalo, New York. We hope you will join us in giving a warm welcome to Gary, Meghan and their dogs

Oliver and Conner (pictured above) and Sandy and cats Roger and Gracie.

We NEED YOUR HELP! Have you ever thought about getting involved in our foster volunteer program?

Here’s your chance! With “kitten season” just around the corner, we’re looking for

caring, dedicated volunteers who are able to help us provide care for animals that are

too young or injured and need a little extra TLC before they are ready to be adopted.

We provide any supplies you may need while you’re caring for and socializing your

furry foster babies. Foster placements may range from just a few days to several

weeks depending on the animals’ needs.

Join us for our Foster Volunteer Orientation on Sunday, May 26 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. Learn more about our foster

program, talk to experienced foster volunteers, and take a tour of TAHS. If you’re interested in attending or learning

more about our foster program, please contact our Foster Coordinator at [email protected].

Layla’s Story: From scared & Skinny to sweet & snuggly In December, 2012 Cruelty Officer Nancy Schilb received a phone call from Toledo Police

reporting a dog that had been abandoned in a garage after the tenants of the home had been

evicted. When Officer Schilb arrived, she found a very emaciated dog locked inside the

garage with no food or water. Layla, as she would later be named by TAHS staff, was very

scared and not interested in coming with Officer Nancy. With help from Toledo Police,

Office Schilb was able to catch Layla and bring her back to TAHS where our staff immediately

began attending to Layla’s needs.

In addition to being extremely skinny (photo middle right), Layla was very scared when she

arrived and it was obvious that she had not been around people much. However, TAHS

Animal Behavior Expert, Aja LeBarr, saw something special in Layla and began working very

closely with her to properly socialized her and help her begin trusting people.

Aja worked with Layla daily for two weeks, walking her around the TAHS building,

introducing her to various staff members and volunteers so she could get used to being

talked to, petted and fed tasty treats. She also spent time each day, snuggling with Layla to

get her use to close human contact so that she could hopefully go up for adoption.

After two weeks of intense work, Layla had made amazing progress and was ready to take

her SAFER behavior test, one that all dogs over the age of 6 months must take before being

placed up for adoption at TAHS. She passed with flying colors! Shortly after becoming

available for adoption, Layla found a wonderful, loving family who promised to spoil and

care for her for the rest of her life! We love happy endings!

If you witness someone hurting an animal, or if you see an animal that looks sick, injured

or like it does not have adequate food, water or shelter please contact us.

All calls and emails are kept confidential.

Report animal cruelty to our hotline at 419-891-9777 or via email to [email protected].

“Do Not Feed” List: Foods that are off-limits For Pets

If you’re like us, your pets are part of the family. However, that doesn’t mean

that Fluffy or Fido should eat the same foods your human family members

are eating. Foods that are safe for humans can be toxic and even deadly

to your pet. Thanks to the American Society for the Prevention of

Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), below is a list of things you should never

feed your furry friends:

• Alcohol - Alcoholic beverages act as a depressant on your pet’s

nervous system and can potentially cause problems such as vomiting,

diarrhea, decreased coordination, difficulty breathing and even death.

• Avocados - Avocados contain a chemical called persin, which is

harmless to humans but can be toxic to dogs. Birds and rodents are also sensitive to avocado poisoning.

• Chocolate, Coffee or anything with caffeine - Chocolate, coffee and products with caffeine contain a substance called

methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and/or panting, seizures, dehydration and even

death. • Gum & Candy - many sweet treats, baked goods and even toothpaste contain a chemical called xylitol, which can

cause lowered blood sugar levels and even liver failure. • Grapes & Raisins - Scientists aren’t sure what chemical in grapes

and raisins is to blame, but eating these fruits can cause kidney failure in both dogs and cats. • Milk - adult animals do not

have enough lactase (the enzyme required to digest lactose) to digest milk and milk-based products which can cause

digestive upset.• Onions, Garlic & Chives - Each of these can cause red blood cell damage in pets. While cats are more at

risk, eating larger quantities can also make dogs sick. • Raw/Undercooked Meat, Eggs and Bones - While feeding your pet

raw meat or bones may seem like a natural and healthy option, it can be very deadly to domestic pets. Raw meat and

raw eggs can contain Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to pets. • Tuna & Other Raw Fish - not only does tuna

lack the nutrients cats need, but too much can lead to mercury poisoning. An enzyme also found in raw fish can destroy

vitamin B1 and lead to neurological disorders. • Uncooked dough - Small amounts of bread are ok as treats, but un-

cooked yeast dough can rise and cause gas to accumulate in your pet’s digestive system. Not only can this be painful, it

can also cause the stomach or intestines to rupture.

If you suspect your pet has eaten any of these foods, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

We Couldn’t Do it without Our Donors! Karnik Pet Lodge is family owned and operated and was founded by the Bauman

Family in May of 1973. Karnik offers doggie daycare, overnight pet lodging,

bathing, and pet loss services spread out over three locations in Toledo, Waterville,

and Ann Arbor, MI. Karnik also offers exciting monthly themed activities for your

pooch to engage them in new, unique, and exciting ways to expend their energy.

The Bauman Family has a long standing relationship with the Toledo Area Humane Society dating back to the mid

80’s when Ray Bauman was a participating member of the TAHS board. Since then, Ray’s son, Ryan, has worked

closely with TAHS volunteers and employees in continuing to further the TAHS mission. Karnik Pet Lodge loves

TAHS and is proud to offer support in many ways including sponsorship of their annual Bark in the Park, the Fur Ball,

and recently the ASPCA $100K Challenge, where Karnik provided adoption bags for the adoptive families to take

home with their new pet.

The Karnik Family is pleased to work closely with the TAHS family and

looks forward to continuing this long standing relationship.

Karnik Pet Lodge is celebrating its 40th Anniversary of providing

superior pet care services. Please stop by anytime and tour any one of

their 3 facilities; their friendly staff would absolutely love

to meet you and your pet!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each of our generous and dedicated sponsors. Without the support

of sponsors like Karnik and many others who partner with us for events, promotions and other projects, we could

not continue to help animals in our community. Be sure to check out our August 2013 newsletter for our next Donor

Spotlight!

If your organization or business is interested in sponsorship opportunities, please contact our Marketing and Special

Events Manager at 419-891-0591 or [email protected].

Barking ovations

Everyday we are thankful and appreciative to the individuals and groups who care for animals as much as we do

and make the decision to donate their time, efforts and/or money to help in whatever way they can.

“Barking Ovations” are our little way of saying thank you!

Barking Ovations to Annie Bennett! Annie had her birthday party

here at TAHS on March 16 and in lieu of birthday gifts, Annie asked

her guests to bring donations for our animals. Together they

donated over 130 cans of dog and cat food, pet toys, cleaning

supplies, gift cards and other goodies. Four paws up for Annie and

her friends!

Barking Ovations to Josh Swagler who also collected donations for

TAHS in celebration of his 10th birthday party. Josh collected 50 cans of dog and cat food, several bags of kitty litter,

dog treats and various cleaning supplies. Thank you Josh!

Barking Ovations to Kennedy Carey who also invited her friends from

her Nature Club of Northwood to join her at TAHS for her birthday party.

The girls’ Nature Club donated $75 to TAHS so we can buy new toys for

the animals. Thanks girls!

Barking Ovations to John Longthorne with Valle Homes, and Daryl and

Jill Moreau, for making possible the new windows in our small dog and

puppy room, as well as in our unavailable holding kennels. The new

windows brighten up the rooms and the pups are enjoying the fresh air

as the weather is warming up. Thank you all so much!

Barking Ovations to Trisha Romeo and Serendipity Photography for

donating their time, talent and passion to create a whimsical and

colorful mural and photographs for our small dog and puppy room.

Thank you Annie and friends for all the donations!

Nature Club girls meet TAHS Mascot , George!

We often get requests from kids and groups looking for things that they can do to make

a difference for the animals at TAHS. If your kids or service group are interest in ways

they can help, please visit our website under “Volunteering” and click on “Service

It’s a day for the dogs as the Toledo Area Metroparks, TAHS and several other local animal rescues and

animal-related vendors come together for the 10th Anniversary of the Metrobarks Festival. Stop by the

TAHS booth and meet some of our adoptable dogs!

Metrobarks will feature the 3rd

Annual Humane Hustle 5K Run/Walk. Two-legged and four-legged runners

and walkers will enjoy a scenic course through Swan Creek Metropark. Pre-register for the Humane

Hustle 5K Run/Walk on or before May 25, 2013 for $17.00, or after May 25 for $20.00. All proceeds

benefit the Toledo Area Humane Society. For more information or to register, visit

www.ToledoAreaHumaneSociety.org.

Fetch your sneakers and grab a furry friend for a 1.5- mile journey around Arrowhead Park!

Walk as an individual, or sign up with a team, and collect pledges that directly benefit the

animals here at TAHS. Then, join us on Sunday, May 19 for a day that’s sure to be a blast

for the entire family! Participate in the walk, enjoy activities, music, food, raffles, and more! Register online or use our printable

registration form (available at the shelter or on our website).

To register online or for more information, visit our website at www.ToledoAreaHumaneSociety.org or call 419-891-0591.
