63. DeutscherKongress für
Endokrinologie
Passend dazu ergab sich das Motto des Kongresses „Endocrinology of the Life Span“.

Justus Liebig was born in 1803 in Darmstadt (Hesse, Holy Roman Empire) as second of nine children of a drysalter’s family. Chemical reactions, e.g. in his father’s workshop or with cap bombs containing silver fulminate at fairs fascinated him from early childhood onwards and raised his interest for chemistry. In 1816, the year “without summer” due to a volcanic eruption, crops were destructed and a severe famine spread over the northern hemisphere. This experience is said to have deeply influenced his life and later work. By the age of 16 years he had already acquired all chemical knowledge of that time in an autodidactic manner.
Grammar school and an apprenticeship at a pharmacy ended without completion. Allegedly, one of his teachers called his intellectual capacities those of a blockhead. However, personal connections with the chemist Professor Kastner of Bonn University permitted him admittance to the universities of Bonn and of Erlangen where he studied chemistry. A stipend by the Hessian government permitted the obviously highly talented young man a three years’ stay at Paris where he continued his training in chemistry under the then best teachers, primarily Professor Gay-Lussac. His doctorate was granted by the University of Erlangen “in absentia”.
In an attempt to modernize the University of Giessen, the Grand Duke of Hesse appointed the 21-year-old Liebig professor of chemistry upon the recommendation of Alexander von Humboldt but against the will of the local faculty! His start was complicated as he hardly received any financial support but soon he unfolded restless activity as a researcher and academic teacher.
Liebig was a pioneer in the modern laboratory-orientated teaching method. He was the first to introduce experiments in lectures and involved students in empirical research. By attracting students from many places all over the world, he could build up highest international reputation as one of the greatest chemistry teachers ever, turning the little town of Giessen into the “Mekka” of the world of chemistry.
Liebig can be considered as the founder of organic chemistry. He developed the ingenious “five bulb apparatus” (Kaliapparat) for elemental analysis permitting the determination of the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen content of organic substances after combustion. A depiction of this apparatus became and still is part of the coat of arms of the American Chemical Society. One of Liebig’s best friends and collaborators was Friedrich Wöhler. Together with him he developed the idea of isomers and furthermore the theory of compound radicals, the latter presenting an early step in the development of structural chemistry.

His book “Organic Chemistry in its Application to Agriculture and Physiology” (1840) promoted the idea that chemistry could revolutionize agricultural practice and enhance yields found widespread attention, had 9 editions and was translated into 34 languages. Anticipating what nowadays is called a “translational” approach, Liebig transferred knowledge from the organic chemistry laboratory to real world problems of food availability. Thus, Liebig became also the „father” of agricultural chemistry realizing that nitrogen and trace minerals were essential plant nutrients. His formulation of the “law of the minimum” describes that plant growth relies on the scarcest nutrient resource, rather than the total amount of resources available.
Liebig gained most popularity by the development of his “Meat Extract”. In search of a cheap and nutritious alternative to real meat for the poor, he developed a manufacturing process for beef extract and later founded “Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company”. Furthermore, to prevent infants from starvation, he developed the first infant formula “Soup for Infants” as a breast milk substitute for babies who could not be nursed. Together with his scholar from the US, Horsford, he developed and promoted baking powder to make lighter bread.
Liebig founded the journal “Annalen der Chemie”, which he edited from 1832 onwards. In 1998 it became the European Journal of Organic Chemistry, still one of the leading journals of chemistry. His enormous scientific influence is further reflected by the fact that unparalleled in the history of science, among the first 60 Nobel Prize winners for Chemistry, 42 were his scientific descendants!
Liebig was ennobled to the rank of a baron in 1845 by the Grand Duke of Hesse, Ludwig II. In 1852 Liebig left Giessen accepting an appointment at the University of Munich offered by Maximilian II, King of Bavaria. He also shifted his focus more to the direction of teaching and consulting. He died in 1873 and was buried in Munich. The “Deutsches Museum” in Munich houses a replica of his Giessen Laboratory.
(text and selection of quotes by Stefan A. Wudy)
The visit to the Liebig Museum, one of the most important museums of chemistry in the world, is highly recommended!
The local organizing committee, Stefan A. Wudy, Andreas Schäffler, Michaela Hartmann and Thomas Karrasch, want to express their sincerest thanks to Prof. Dr. Eduard Alter, president of the Liebig Society Giessen and the Liebig Museum of Giessen for their invaluable help with information and photos. The cover of this booklet shows a Portrait of Justus von Liebig, an oil painting by Wilhelm Trautschold (1815-1877), circa 1846.

Science Quotes by Justus Liebig
“Chocolate is a perfect food, as wholesome as it is delicious, a beneficent restorer of exhausted power...it is the best friend of those engaged in literary pursuits.”
“If you want to become a chemist, you will have to ruin your health. If you don‘t ruin your health studying, you won‘t accomplish anything these days in chemistry.” (Liebig‘s advice to August Kekulé)
“The progress of mankind is due exclusively to the progress of natural sciences, not to morals, religion or philosophy.”
“A time will come, when fields will be manured with a solution of glass (silicate of potash), with the ashes of burnt straw, and with the salts of phosphoric acid, prepared in chemical manufactories, exactly as at present medicines are given for fever and goitre.” (Agricultural Chemistry, 1847, 4th edn., 186)
“Since the discovery of oxygen the civilised world has undergone a revolution in manners and customs. The knowledge of the composition of the atmosphere, of the solid crust of the earth, of water, and of their influence upon the life of plants and animals, was linked to that discovery. The successful pursuit of innumerable trades and manufactures, the profitable separation of metals from their ores, also stand in the closest connection therewith”. (Familiar Letters on Chemistry, 1851)
“The loveliest theories are being overthrown by these damned experiments; it‘s no fun being a chemist anymore”. (Liebig to Berzelius, 1834)
“The production of all organic substances no longer belongs just to living organisms. It must be seen as not only probable, but as certain, that we shall be able to produce them in our laboratories. Sugar, salicin, and morphine will be artificially produced. Of course, we do not yet know how to do this, because we do not yet know the precursors from which these compounds arise, but we shall come to know them.” (Liebig and Woehler, 1838)
Quotes by others about Liebig
“But for twenty years previous to 1847 a force had been at work in a little county town of Germany destined to effect the education of Christendom, and at the same time to enlarge the boundaries of human knowledge, first in chemistry and the allied branches, then in every other one of the natural sciences. The place was Giessen; the inventor Liebig; the method, a laboratory for instruction and research.” (Yale University, Semi-Centennial Discourse, 1847-97)
“Liebig taught the world two great lessons. The first was that in order to teach chemistry it was necessary that students should be taken into a laboratory. The second lesson was that he who is to apply scientific thought and method to industrial problems must have a thorough knowledge of the sciences. The world learned the first lesson more readily than it learned the second.” (Ira Remsen, 1910)

Professor Dr. Marc Y. Donath is Head of the Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University Hospital of Basel, and Research Dean at the University of Basel. His main scientific contribution is the description of an inflammatory process underlying beta cell failure in Type 2 diabetes, with a central role for IL-1beta. On the basis of this he initiated clinical trials in patients with Type 2 diabetes that vindicates this hypothesis and resulting in the development of novel pharmacological approaches. His work has fundamentally contributed
to what today is a well-accepted concept that the innate immune system is an integral component in the regulation of metabolism.
Professor Dr. Thomas RemerAlready during his study of nutritional science, Thomas Remer started to become interested in steroid hormones and their association with nutrition. Adrenarche and glucocorticoid secretion became a focus of research, at first in his PhD thesis and in postdoc studies at the University of Bonn via animal experiments, and subsequently at the former Research Institute of Child Nutrition and in the current DONALD study in Dortmund in which healthy children and adolescents are noninvasively examined. Apart from dietary iodine and mineral supply and also children´s bone status, Thomas Remer´s ongoing research interest focuses on nutritional acid loading and its interrelationship with long-term health outcomes including glucocorticoid action.
Professor Dr. Mandrup-Poulsen is a physician scientist, board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, who serves as Professor of Immuno-endocrinology at the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on understanding beta-cell death leading to diabetes, and his discovery that proinflammatory cytokines cause beta-cell functional failure and destruction qualified him for the 1994 Oskar Minkowski prize of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
