Grass Roots Talk
Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this
Spartan South Midland Premier Division tie.
Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of London Colney
to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and have a safe trip
back afterwards.
We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Mr N.Neophytou and
his assistants Mr.M.Taylor & Mr.A McCree
Today's match is sponsored by Ralph Griffiths and we would like to thank
Our great supporter and long-time stalwart of the club for his continued
generous support.
Hopefully the weather has changed and we can get down to the rest of the
season without too many interruptions
Our guests today are having another good season in The Premier Division.
When we met at the very start of the season when we played out a 1-1
draw. Both teams were fielding new sides and it looked like both would
have a mediocre year ahead. Colney have reached a cup final where they
lost narrowly to Hertford Town and are in 8th place in the league with
games in hand.
We have also come good in the second half of the season as our young side
has started to gel and to show some good skill and battling qualities, this
therefore should be a better encounter than the earlier one.
The Reserves were unfortunate to loose on Tuesday to a strong
Northwood side in The Challenge Shield.
The Youth side also went down to a skilful Newport Pagnell side on the
same evening.
On Tuesday we have the re-arranged game against AFC Dunstable.
To keep up with all our teams results, fixtures and general club news.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,
changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another
pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3
including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.
The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned
which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.
Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the
Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped
down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through
the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.
South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA
In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.
In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established
itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.
in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists
in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.
In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also
reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including
Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on
the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,
defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the
league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.
The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the
Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We
also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only
winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior
Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior
Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.
We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.
The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The
Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.
The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating
Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a
newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield
for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the
sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to
become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12
major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as
did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies
had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing
surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.
Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance
with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in
place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down
in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement
with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.
Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in
the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We
were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A
Vase for the first time.
Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim
round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large
crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference
league
Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on
FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came
after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.
Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood
down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying
on in some capacity.
Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The
County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.
Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up
with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the
whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League
Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up
the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban
League next season.
Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the
higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in
2010/2011.
The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.
Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s
Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town
Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to
finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going
through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to
Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then
losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the
League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and
were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James
Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies
team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished
runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground
and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.
London Colney History
London Colney Football Club was formed in 1907, playing at Whitehorse Lane until
moving to its present ground at Cotlandswick, London Colney in 1976.
The Club played in the Mid Herts League until the mid fifties, when it joined the Herts
County League. The Club has enjoyed many successes over the years with the 1st team
winning the Premier Division League 3 times between 1986 and 1990, and the reserves
winning the Reserve Division 4 times between 1987 and 1992.
In 1992 the Club moved to the South Midlands League where in the first season the 1st
Team became runners up in the Senior Division and the Reserves won the Division 1
Reserves section. Further successes came between 1993 and 1998 with the 1st Team
winning The O,Brian Butcher Challenge Cup, The Herts Charity Shield, The Herts
Centenary Trophy, The Premier Division Cup and gaining promotion to the Premier
Division. The Reserves also did well during this time and in 1998 won The Reserves
Challenge Trophy.
In the 1998/99 season the South Midlands League amalgamated with the Spartan League to
form the Minerva Spartan South Midlands League and London Colney finished 3rd in the
Premier Division. The ‘Blue Boys’ had the title within their grasp after a brilliant 11 match
winning streak between October and December and they remained in the top two
throughout the final weeks of the season only to be pipped at the post on the final day of
the season by Barkingside and Potters Bar Town. This disappointment was eased a few
days later when they beat Hoddesdon Town 1-0 to win the Herts Charity Shield. The
Reserves had a brilliant season winning the Reserve League and the reserve cup
comfortably. This was also the year that The Spartan South Midlands League Management
committee made first Team Manager Mick Wright Manager of the Year for the 1998/99
season.
The 1999/2000 season saw Malcolm Doctor join Mick Wright as a joint manager of the 1st
Team. They were finalists in the both the Challenge Trophy and the Premier Division Cup
only being beaten in penalty shoot outs in both matches. This year London Colney was
once again a competitor in the FA Vase and reached the last sixteen losing 4-3 to Eccles
Hill United who travelled from Yorkshire for the match.
The 2000/2001 season saw the 1st Team finishing runners up in the League. The reserves
finished a creditable 6th in the reserve division.
In the 2001/2002 season London Colney saw its greatest successes yet with the 1st Team
winning the League with a ten point difference – the highest in the league’s history. We lost
only two games; scored a massive 119 goals; had a goal difference of 87 after going
unbeaten for the first 27 league games. We went top after just three games and maintained
domination apart from a few days in December, won 28 of our 38 games and provided the
league’s leading scorer through Gary Sippetts who bagged an incredible 45 strikes. London
Colney were also runners up in the Herts Senior Trophy, the only team in the league to ever
reach that position, only narrowly losing to Borehamwood 3-2 in a very hard fought match.
We also won the Challenge Trophy and were semi-finalists in the Premier Division Cup.
These achievements were rewarded with our Managers, Malcolm Doctor and Mick Wright
being awarded with the Managers of the Year Trophy.
The 2002/03 season – what a difference a year makes – whilst not expecting the same
successes as the previous season the loss of many of our players to other clubs meant a
disastrous start to the season. We then lost Malcolm Doctor who resigned early in the
season. However thanks to John Templeton stepping into the breach to join Mick we
managed to finish the season a creditable 6th in the league. Our reserves were an academy
side and whilst there footballing skills were undisputed and they won the league and were
finalists in the reserve cup, they contributed little to the well-being and spirit of London
Colney Football Club.
2003/04 season saw several of our players returning to the club and with an optimistic
outlook and a great deal of enthusiasm. The first team management remained the same with
Mick Wright and John Templeton at the helm. The reserves have reverted to a normal club
side with Ray Flanagan and Alan Connell in charge. The first team finished 6th in the
league and were finalists in the Challenge Trophy losing to Brook House on penalties after
extra time. The reserves finished in the bottom half of the reserve division, which was
commendable as it was the first season with Ray and Alan in charge.
2004/05 saw Mick Wright stepping down as Manager leaving John Templeton in sole
charge. After a very good start, when we won 7 league games in a row, we seemed to lose
our way and finished a disappointing 11th in the league. However we fared better in the
Challenge Trophy and were finalists but were well beaten by Hillingdon Borough 4-1 on
the night. The Reserves finished in the lower half of the table in the Reserve Division
2005/06 season saw a new Management Team of Nigel Tester, Kevin Bland and Vince
Buck without much success with the 1st Team finishing 14th in the league but having a
good FA Vase Cup run. The reserves finished third under the management of Mark Tyrell
and Gary Barber.
2006/2007 We started the season with a new management team but it was decided that for
the long term good of the club we would have to part company with the new manager
before the end of the season. The 1st team finished mid table and had an early exit in all
major cup competitions. In contrast the Reserves, under the guidance of Manager Mark
Tyrrell, had a brilliant season by winning the league on the last game of the season and also
winning the Reserve Challenge Cup beating WGC Reserves from a division above. They
were also the losing finalists in the Herts Intermediate Cup.2007/2008 London Colney FC
Centenary Year.
Saw the club relegated from the Premier League for the first time we now start the next
century of the club trying to get back to Premier SSMFL Premier Status.
2008/2009 saw additional committee members joining a new management team of Julian
Robinson as Manager with Frank Patrick as his assistant with most of the young squad
retained with a couple of new faces to begin the season in Division One and begin a period
of stability with steady consolidation of a club that had shared it’s near past of turmoil with
near extinction a possibility.
2009/10 After what seemed an endless season due to fixture congestion and the weather
being so inclement the club had a tremendous campaign, albeit after the disappointment of
losing out by 1 point for one of the promotion places leaving everyone at the club deflated
for a while until we reflected on two cup final victories and one losing 9-10 on pens in the
other. The first team with a third place finish in the MSSML Div One good cup runs in the
FA and Vase competitions, the reserves having a tremendous season finishing second in
Div Two, The A team won the Bingham Cup and finished runners up in the other cup final
and finally the U18’s winning the league and cup double.
2010/11 A management team of Dave Townsend and Frank Patrick were quickly invited
into the hot seat following the departure of Julian Robinson to Tring Athletic to try and
stabilise the club once more and push for honours, following early disappointing results the
team were unable to reach the promotion spots to remain in the division although a
Hertfordshire Charity Shield Final saw the Blueboys lose against Premier side Leverstock
Green
2011/12 Following the disappointment of staying in Division One a new management team
of Ryan Thompson, Chris Day and Tony Kavanagh were brought in to bring fresh impetus
into the club after Dave Townsend stepped down to become Reserve team manager due to
his heavy work commitments together with his impending marriage. The season went from
strength to strength with promotion to the premier division gained by a record 15 points
with top scorer Matty Newman hitting the 50 goal mark over all competitions, with the
young reserve side finishing a creditable mid table.
Season 2012/13 Saw the side finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division
consolidating the improvement under Ryan Thompsons guidance this after a season of
unprecedented injuries leaving the squad sadly depleted of up to 10 first team players for
most of the season.
Season 2013/14 Saw the side again finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier
Division in what would be Ryan Thompsons last season as manager. After a slow start, the
team had a good middle and end to the campaign climbing up the table in the process. Matt
Newman also departed scoring 32 goals in his final season with the Blueboys, backed up
well by Martin Collins with 17 goals.
Season 2014/15 had started with Jim Nicholls and his coaching staff taking over from Ryan
Thompson. However Jim has since stepped down and Ryan Thompson has again taken
over the first team duties. We wish them all the best for the coming season.

Berkhamsted 2-2 TAFC First team
TAFC goals: Stewart King (2)
KINGY'S BRACE EARNS A DRAMATIC DERBY POINT We appeared to be hurtling towards defeat when our local rivals and near neighbours Berkhamsted took a commanding 2-0 lead by the early stages of the second half. Up to that point we had been a pale shadow of the side that had performed so well in the last 3 months, with just 3 narrow defeats (2 of which were against top 5 sides) from 14 games. In response Julian Robinson and Ian Richardson made some inspired changes that led to substitute Stewart King coming on and making a dramatic impact by firstly reducing the deficit within seconds and then grabbing a dramatic equaliser deep into added time. It was boys own stuff from Kingy. Our exertions in midweek, when we bravely battled for a well deserved 1-1 draw at 2nd placed AFC Dunstable, seemed to have taken its toll on our young players as they seemed a bit flat and below par during the first half. Berko started strongly and their centre forward BJ Christie, who was making a return to the side after injury, produced the first shot of the game after only 2 minutes. It didn't test Jack Hopwood but 8 minutes later he would have been happy to see Frankie Jowle's shot cum cross flash dangerous across the area and out harmlessly for a goal kick. We were slow to get going but we did win the first corner of the game after 13 minutes, which unfortunately came to nothing. Berko looked the more dangerous team and their right back Courtney Massey whipped in a great cross which we managed to clear. But soon afterwards in the 19th minute we were not so successful in clearing our lines and Frankie Jowle took full advantage to fire a shot into the far corner. It was a well taken goal and gave the home side the initiative. Score 1-0. Berko nearly doubled their lead within seconds when a quick break caught us on the hop but this time Jowle's shot was easily saved by Jack Hopwood. We were missing Vinnie Iannone up front and were finding it difficult to make an impression on the home defence in which big centre back and captain Ed Canham won everything in the air. But the home defence got in a muddle 10 minutes before the break and that allowed Chris Vardy to break away, but the ball wouldn't run kindly for him and his shot was pushed away by keeper Carl Tasker. Unfortunately none of our players were on hand to snap up the loose ball. Prior to that we won a free kick in a good position and Taylor Collins's well struck delivery forced the keeper to dive and punch the ball away. We won a couple of corners but again they came to nothing. It was then Berkos turn to win their first corner in the 36th minute and Ed Canham will feel he should have done better than direct a free header straight into the arms of Jack Hopwood. We had a great chance to equalise 2 minutes later when Ryan Sturges seized on a poor clearance from keeper Carl Tasker then found himself with a good sight of goal following an exchange of passes with Kieran Turner but the keeper atoned for his error by making a great save at the expense of a corner. Tasker missed the corner but Dan Steadman and Ollie Hogg got in each others way at the far post and keeper was probably relieved that he could safely gather the ball in. With just a few minutes left to the break BJ Christie shaped up to shoot but Sam Joliffe did brilliantly to block his effort. After a disappointing half we could have no complaint about being a goal down to our hosts who had been the better side. Half Time: Berkhamsted 1 Tring Athletic 0
Adam Toone appeared after the break in place of the unwell Ollie Hogg and he slotted into his usual centre back position allowing Sam Joliffe to return to his normal midfield role. It was great to see the big man back again after he injured himself against London Tigers on 27th January, but he will be unhappy about his wayward header which allowed BJ Christie a run on goal and finally resulted in him pushing the Berko forward over for a penalty and getting a yellow card for his troubles. To quote Tony Pullis " I've seen old women on the high street take more of a knock than that and stay on their feet" and the Berko forward did go over rather easily for a big guy, but if the boot had been on the other foot we would have expected a penalty. Josh Chamberlain, who was making his 200 appearance, confidently dispatched the penalty to cement his place as Berko's leading scorer with 24 goals and give his side a huge 2 goal advantage after 49 minutes. Score 2-0. We were not performing to our usual standard and were facing a big uphill challenge to get back 2 goals and recognising this we brought on Ryan McMahon and Stewart King in the 58th minute for Ryan Sturges and Rob Tomlin and the impact was immediate as within a minute we pulled a goal back. It was created by a precisely taken free kick from Kieran Turner and Stewart King was on the end of it to head it past Carl Tasker to get us right back into a game that appeared to be drifting away from us. Score 2-1. With Ryan McMahon and Sam Joliffe in the centre of midfield we were able to match our hosts physicality and the game became much more evenly balanced. Jack Hopwood made a couple of saves from Adiel Mannion and later from Josh Chamberlain and Kieran Turner struck a free kick just over. In the 70th minute Kieran Turner produced some lovely footwork and was just about to break into the opposition area when he was cynical pulled down from behind by Max Farrelly. It certainly robbed us of a potential scoring opportunity and Farrelly was booked but it was a classic case of Berko man taking one for the team. Time was running out for us when we won a free kick in a good position and the same combination came to our rescue with Kieran Turner's superb set piece being finished off by Stewart King. Kingy has endured a lot of injuries this season and this was only his 7 goal but undoubtedly it would have been one of his most enjoyable moments, grabbing an equaliser in a local derby in the 94th minute. Score 2-2. There was just enough time for us to deal with a free kick before the Referee blew the final whistle on an eventful derby match, which attracted a crowd of 183 (with a large contingent of Athletic supporters), the biggest attendance in the South Midlands League this season. Full Time: Berkhamsted 2 Tring Athletic 2 After a poor first half and going behind again so soon in the second we may have buckled under the pressure but again we showed tremendous fight and character to haul ourselves back and keep going to the very end. Also full marks to Julian and Ian for boldly making changes which in the end rewarded us with a point which we thoroughly deserved. There were only 3 other games played on Saturday so full marks to our hosts for putting the game on. The only significant change saw Dunstable go top after beating Biggleswade 2-0 but the odds still favour Kings Langley who are only 2 points behind with 5 games in hand. We remain in 6th place and Berko in 10th. After a heavy schedule of 5 games in 2 weeks which has taken its toll on the players we now have a week off to heal and rest a few weary bones before travelling to Holmer Green on Saturday. Crowd: 183

Chilfest is back for 2015 UPDATE, Saturday's acts announced today are Billy Ocean (headlining) ABC,
Limahl, Bad Manners, The Real Thing, The Blow Monkeys & Sonia. Tickets
still on sale.
Since announcing back in July that Chilfest would not be returning we have
been overwhelmed by the comments received from so many in support of the
event. We have now had a chance to consider your views and this, combined
with some exciting developments in identifying possible line-ups for a future
event, has led to a re-think on our part.
So we're delighted to announce that Chilfest WILL be returning on Saturday 10
July 2015.
Staging Chilfest has always been about doing good for the local community and
we're also delighted to announce that we have once again chosen Rennie Grove
Hospice Care as our charity. Despite the financial challenges of the last two
years we have donated £20,000 to the charity to help them deliver hospice at
home care and support for people in our local community with cancer and life-
limiting illness.
We'll be posting more details about Chilfest 2015 in the coming weeks on this
page and on our website but please share this announcement with all your
Facebook and non-Facebook friends and help us get the word out there

League
AFC Dunstable 1-1 TAFC First team TAFC goals: Christopher Vardy
VARDY MAGIC EARNS A DRAW The boys did us proud with this hard working, tenacious draw against a big, powerful Dunstable side that
were on a magnificent 16 game unbeaten run in the League. We don't have a great record against
Dunstable, just 1 win from 9 games, but we showed great character and team spirit against a team with
the incentive of going to the top of the table had they collected all 3 points.
But the stand out moment from the game was a piece of class finishing from Chris Vardy who evidently
came through the ranks at Dunstable before joining us. In the 35th minute he picked up a fine pass from
Ollie Hogg then danced his way past the keeper and a couple of defenders before slotting the ball into the
net. One of our supporters summed it up nicely by saying that he was forced to score because he ran out of
defenders to beat!
This was a tough fixture because we knew our hosts would go all out to keep the pressure on league
leaders Kings Langley and they started strongly and we had to dig in and concentrate on keeping things
tight at the back. It took 20 minutes before we had our first shot at goal, an effort from Luke Dunstan that
went well wide, but it was the start of a better period for us as we started to grow in confidence.
Chris Vardy went over in the area and there was a shout from our players for a penalty which the Referee
turned down. Soon afterwards Ollie Hogg sent Chris Vardy away down the left with a terrific pass. Our
leading marksman beat the defender for pace and then picked out Ryan Sturges at the far post with an
accurate cross, but Ryan's shot was cleared off the line.
We were looking dangerous going forward and Ryan Sturges and Chris Vardy smashed presentable
chances high over the bar. Finally our good play was rewarded in the 35th minute with the goal from
Vardy, his 24th of the season. Score 0-1.
Dunstable have some big players and we were missing our 2 main centre backs, Chris Salmon and Adam
Toone, so set pieces were a constant source of danger. Soon after we took the lead the home players
thought they had equalised from a corner but Jack Hopwood managed to scoop the ball away under severe
pressure. The Linesman, who was right in line, said the ball had not crossed the line and this was echoed
by a home substitute. Another corner did hit the net, but fortunately for us the ball landed behind the goal.
We had one more scare in the 43rd minute when Chris Francis was played into our area, but under great
pressure from Dan Steadman he stabbed the ball just past the far post.
It was a great half from the lads and they deserved their hard earned lead.
Half Time: AFC Dunstable 0 Tring Athletic 1
The home side made a change during the break brining on Enzo Silvestri for Fabio Bufano and they made
the running from the restart as we started slowly. Just 7 minutes into the half we conceded the equaliser
following a couple of errors. We gave the ball away cheaply near the half way line then a home players
scuffed his pass but it managed to be played through to James Warne who didn't waste the opportunity.
Score 1-1.
For our supporters they must have sensed a moment of déjà vu as in recent games against Harefield and
Hertford we have worked hard to take the lead only to lose the initiative in the second period, but that was
not going to be the case here.
Dunstable were clearly perked up by the goal and could sense a place at the top of the table was within
their grasp but we responded superbly to keep our opponents at bay. We had some anxious moment
especially from set pieces and Jack Hopwood had to get down sharply to save a deflected cross at the near
post. But the back 3 of Kevin McManus, Dan Steadman and stand in skipper Sam Joliffe stuck to their task
diligently.
We might have claimed a winner with about 15 minutes to go when Rob Tomlin's precise shot looked
destined for the far corner of the net until Ricky Perks made a great save to tip the ball around the post.
From the corner there was a made scramble in the Dunstable goal mouth but we just couldn't get a foot to
the ball and it was eventually hacked clear.
Dunstable kept pressing and brought on a giant forward Leon Simpson but we were in no mood to concede
any last minute goals and the game ended all square which was a fair result.
Full Time: AFC Dunstable 1 Tring Athletic 1
A terrific performance from the players and it was great to see Colin Philips and Chris Juraszek present at
the game as along with Youth Team Managers Nick Seaton and Matt Hayward they have played major
roles in bringing on youngsters through the teams and into the First Team squad. They would have taken a
lot of satisfaction at seeing so many youngsters doing so well against a top team.
Next up is another tough fixture with a short trip to Berkhamsted on Saturday, which is always a lively
affair.

Challenge Shield
Northwood 2-1 TAFC Reserve team
The reserves went down 2-1 at Northwood in the Suburban Challenge
Shield. Tring started strongly with Kieran Turner shooting just wide on
8 minutes and Alex Groom narrowly cleared the bar with a 30 yarder
and the keeper beaten. Again Turner went close from just outside the
box and Groom had a shot saved. Northwood took the lead after 36
minutes against the run of play and it remained that way until the
break.
Again Tring started brightly with Ollie Butler having a shot saved
within a minute of the restart. Northwood extended their lead following
a scramble in the 6 yard box before Tring pulled one back.
On the hour mark we were awarded a penalty following a handball and
Alex Groom's kick found the corner of the net.
Northwood also won a penalty on 72 minutes after a Dave Salmon foul
but the resulting kick smacked against the bar and was cleared.
Final score Northwood 2-1 TAFC
