What is the ACSF?

5 Core Skills:

› Learning

› Reading

› Writing

› Oral communication

› Numeracy

Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5(also pre-Level 1)

Spiky profile: ScenarioAmil has decided to enrol in Certificate III in Electrotechnology –

Electrician, from the UEE07 Electrotechnology Training Package. He

attends a pre assessment interview at the local TAFE institute and an

LLN specialist assesses his skills as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Amil’s

overall spiky profile shows that his ACSF levels of performance vary

across the five core skills. The assessor knows that the numeracy

requirements of the Certificate III in Electrotechnology – Electrician

are high, with a number of units at level 5 of the ACSF.

ACF and the AQF• The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single, 10 level,

coherent framework for qualifications in the school, VET and higher education sectors in Australia.

• The levels of the AQF do not match up directly with the performance levels of the ACSF. This is because of the way that units of competency and qualifications have been written.

• Effective performance in different industries requires different core skills and core skill requirements will also vary in different contexts.

• Two qualifications at the same AQF level can have different core skill requirements.

Trigger words

• Trigger words are words or phrases contained in a unit which suggest its core skills requirements

The training environment

The LLN demands of the training environment should be no higher than those of the unit

• Written materialso Clear learning materials written at right LLN level – consider images, font

size, layout etc.

• Training methodologyo Teach language of workplace, break tasks down into steps, use examples of

workplace docs, allow practice time, use role-plays,etc.

• Assessment methodso Same guidelines as for written materials (above)o Choose modes that match LLN requirements of unit

• Physical environmento Configure class for interaction and proximity to trainer

The training environment

Scaffolding• When you ask a learner to do a certain task that requires specific LLN skills

then you should provide them with an example of how you would expect the task to be done

• Learners can then use the model until they develop enough confidence to ‘go it alone‘

• This method is called ‘scaffolding‘

• When talking to learners about a particular LLN skill, discuss the purpose for that skill within the particular context e.g. using questioning to collect details from a customer about faulty goods as part of a ‘returns policy‘

• For example, when you provide a scaffold for a writing or reading task, you could use a document from the workplace and discuss the various layout features of the document and what it is used for

• Scaffolding can be used for any core skill.
