CHILD INFORMATION, DEVELOPMENT & LEARNING CENTRE (CHILD)

INTRODUCTION

CHILD is a voluntary social movement that attempts to optimize opportunities for the less

fortunate and disadvantaged children in our midst to realize their full potential.

Preschool Education

Preschool education is the provision of education for children before the commencement of

statutory education, usually between the ages of four to six, depending on the jurisdiction.

Preschool is also known as nursery school, day care or kindergarten where children are

taught to develop basic skills through creative play and social interaction.

The area of development which preschool education covers varies from country to country.

However the following main themes are represented in the majority of systems.

Personal, social and emotional development

Communication, including talking and listening

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Creative and aesthetic development

Physical development

Mathematical awareness and development

Vision

That in tandem with brain function, every child develops his or her full potential.

Mission

To establish prototype preschools that will serve as models for others to emulate.

Goals

Develop a positive attitude toward school and learning

Develop a sense of high self-esteem and independence

Develop concentration skills for successful study habits

Foster inner discipline and sense of order

Develop habit of initiative and persistence

Acquire the basic skills necessary for a lifetime of learning

CHILD’s focus on learning

The goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-

selected course of studies, but rather to cultivate the child’s own natural desire to learn.

CHILD preschools will allow children the freedom to learn and develop at their own

individual pace in a stimulating fun filled yet homelike environment. Children undergoing

the CHILD preschool will be better prepared to cope with the complex challenges of

tomorrow’s world.

CHILD’S PHILOSOPHY

“The Child is the Father of the Man”

The period between 5 to 15 years in the life of a child constitutes a critical phase in its

psychosocial development. It is during this period that the young, impressionable and

malleable mind acquires the characteristics that go to make the future of man, for “the

CHILD is the Father of the Man”. Many children are fortunate to be born into good homes

with caring, concerned parents who have the inclination, the will and the resources to lay a

sound foundation for their optimal growth and development. However, many more are less

fortunate and are born in the green ghettos or the rural and urban slums which are rudely

oppressive to their progress.

The basic philosophy of CHILD stems from its conviction that if a child is born into an

underprivileged home, he or she will grow into an adult with self-confidence and self-

esteem, imbued with universal values and the skills and desires to contribute to the growth

and development of society, of which he is an integral part. He must be nurtured during the

critical period of his life i.e. between the ages of 5 to 15 years.

Objectives

To assist children in realizing their full potential

To assist Tamil school children achieve parity with national averages by 2010

To build a cohesive and caring community of Indian children

To instill values of love, reverence and compassion

To instill love for learning at an early age and prepare the children for their

subsequent education

CHILD believes that these children should be able to start their primary education with the

following in hand:

Be able to read, write and count

Be able to listen and comprehend the 3 main languages

Be able to relate to others

Know the difference between what is right & wrong

Be able to share and care

Be curious and able to explore

Be comfortable and happy with them

Love their families, friends, teachers, environment and most importantly,

themselves

Develop physical coordination and healthy habits

Inculcate the reading habit

Be able to express them clearly and build effective communication and writing

skills in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Tamil

Curriculum

Kindergarten education is all about promoting a love for learning

To provide quality affordable fun-learning preschool education to children of working

class backgrounds and create opportunities for the children to discover themselves, their

talents and inherent potential; motivate, to seek knowledge; and realize that knowledge is

both fun and useful.

The curriculum is based on the syllabus recommended by the Ministry of Education.

Greater emphasis is given to the acquisition and proficiency skills of Bahasa Malaysia and

English.

The curriculum is carefully planned and the materials prepared with the following taken

into consideration that

Each child is unique

Each child can make a difference

Each child is capable

Education does not start and stop at school, it is a journey

We can help them take the first step towards the fulfillment of their dreams

MANAGEMENT

CHILD will manage the Tadika Rakyat in the following manner:

Set up the preschool

Have regular visits to check on the teacher’s and student’s attendance, and

compliance with CCI reporting, documentation and teaching methods.

Prepare a monthly and yearly lesson planner and check on the effectiveness of the

lesson plans.

Organize at least 2 monthly visits to ensure that the preschools are properly

managed.

Coordinate all the preschools in the state.

CHILD plays a key role to bring a good management for the kindergartens. It includes

managing the staff, funding, education, law, politics and policy. This is very important to

manage a kindergarten.

Coordinators are appointed by CHILD according to the states to coordinate all the schools

to ensure if they are running properly to achieve the aim. They play an important role to

ensure that all the kindergartens are well managed. Moreover, the coordinators need to

implement with new ideas to improve the kindergartens.

Principals play an important role as a medium for the Child Coordinator, Teachers,

Parents and Students. The principal co-operates in any level to improve the quality of the

kindergartens and basically they concern more on the education and development of the

students.

Teachers are the key role to teach and develop the students in any situation through the

ideas of the upper level management. In addition, teachers will interact with parents to

ensure the students are doing well in class.

Parents should concern and work together with the teachers and the management for the

future of the students.

PRESCHOOL MANAGEMENT

Students

The students are mainly from the lower income and single parent families in the

rural area. CHILD is a key component in ensuring that these children are provided

with a strong foundation in education and thus assuring them of a promising future.

Under the Outreach Program, teachers are encouraged to go from home to home, to

educate families on the advantages of sending their children to our preschools.

This is to ensure that all children get preschool education irrespective of their social

and financial background.

3 levels of classes are conducted, i.e.

Year 4 -age 4 and below

Year 5 -age 5

Year 6 -age 6

Class activities will be held in small groups. The ideal ratio is 1 teacher to 15 students.

Enrolment

The school year begins in January as with the current government run schools.

Enrolment should be done prior to this for optimal budgeting of resources and due to

limited places available.

In the event parents wish to enroll their children during mid-term, availability of space

and workbooks must be taken into consideration before they are accepted.

Role of Preschool

Many of the children joining the Standard 1 class in Tamil schools are ill prepared

to adjust to the transition phase between home and school. They do not possess the

correct attitude to learning. Their skills in communication, reading and writing are

poor. This continues throughout the schooling phase. Preschool classes can help

obviate these challenges.

The curriculum is based on the syllabus recommended by the Ministry of

Education. Greater emphasis is given to the acquisition and proficiency skills of

Bahasa Malaysia and English.

PIBG provides a supporting role between the students, parents, community and the

management.

Role of Teachers

Preschool teacher must be kind, cheerful

and loves children. She must be

interested and actively involved in what

the children are doing. She must dress in

clothes that allow her to kneel down to

the children’s level when talking to

them, run around or even crawl with

them during playtime. She must be

sensitive and responsive - if a child falls

down, she responds immediately to

comfort him/her.

Candidates must fulfill the minimum recommended qualification by the Ministry of

Education. Further training will be provided by CCI. The starting salary is proposed

at RM500 for assistant teachers and RM600 for teachers.

All lessons must be recorded at the beginning of the week with detailed outline of

what will be taught and the teaching aids that will be utilized. Lessons are based on

weekly themes.

Fees

Monthly fees of RM 20 will be charged. This is to cover expenses incurred in

running the preschool e.g. salary for teachers & assistant teachers, cleaner

expenses, refreshments, stationery etc.

In the event any parent is unable to meet this amount due to their economic

standing and challenges faced, a note will be made and fees waived for the student.

The accounts will be maintained by the respective Head Teacher and PIBG with the

Preschool Coordinator overseeing them. These accounts will in turn be audited by

Registered accountants.

Security System

Security is one of the key elements

of running a preschool. The

child’s safety is top priority. This

is why it is so important that a

preschool is registered as this

means that it satisfies local safety,

fire and hygiene requirements.

A preschool setup must be clean,

cheery, well-ventilated and

spacious enough for children to

run around and play. The walls

should display their work at their

eye level.

As open communication is important in the learning process, an ideal class-size is

between 15 and 20 children with one teacher and one assistant teacher.

Frequent checks would be carried out to ensure the safety within the preschool. The

teachers are required to do the following:

Come early, that is, at least half an hour before the school starts.

Wait until all the students have left before closing up.

Lock the gate during school hours to ensure that none of the children walk.

Out or an outsider walks in without the teachers knowledge.

All visitors are required to fill up the Visitors Log Book.

The teachers should have a comprehensive idea on safety.

Able to deal with any emergencies that could arise.
