Fielding technology for the goal

As I watched Robin van Persie score his goal for the Netherlands against Spain in the group-stage match at World Cup 2014 with his now-famous diving header, it struck me just what a marvellous ecosystem of people and technology has grown around this age-old game requiring simply a ball and a patch of dirt to play.

Sitting comfortably in my living room some 10,000 miles away from the action in Brazil, I could watch the “Flying Dutchman” mere seconds after his feat, in high definition, and from no less than three beautifully-shot angles. The technologies involved, from the high performance video cameras to space satellites and underwater cables for transmission, are mind boggling.

Technology is taking centrestage in World Cup 2014.

We saw revolutionary technology – the German-produced goal-line technology used for the first time in World Cup involves 14 high-speed cameras placed around each field to track the position of the ball in relation to the goal-line plane to within a couple of centimetres. With each camera capable of taking 500 pictures per second, the system can process the images, filter out the players and referee, determine whether a goal has been scored, and transmit this result instantly to a wristwatch worn by the referee, who then makes his final call. The margins of error for these calls have markedly shrunk with this technology.

We saw incremental technology advancements. The humble football, which probably started off as an air-filled animal skin bag, saw its latest incarnation as Brazuca, a ball designed for the event and tested over two and a half years,

with the integration of material, symmetry and surface dimples to provide improved grip and aerodynamics on the pitch.

We saw innovative use of technology that is not necessarily sophisticated. The vanishing spray – essentially a shaving foam-like substance which disappears after minutes – was used by referees to mark the line for the defensive human wall to prevent it from creeping forward during free kicks.

We saw inspirational technology. The first kick of World Cup Brazil was made by a paraplegic in a robotic exoskeleton which was controlled by his brain signals transmitted through the electrodes on his cap. It was a gentle kick by physical measures, one that even the lead scientist of the project did not guarantee up to the event. But it provided strong inspiration to people out there to dream up more technologies to power the lives of others.

In Keppel, leveraging and advancing technology is and will continue to be the mainstay. From small-scale innovative enhancements to a sandblasting process (see page 25) to advanced integrated waste management solutions showcased at the CleanEnviro Summit Singapore (see page 6) and our proven technologies for the offshore and marine sector featured at various exhibitions (see pages 12 and 14), to the lofty and inspirational goals that are taking shape at the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (see article on World Cities Summit on page 9), we can be proud of our contributions to the technology eco-system of Singapore and the world.

Patriot for the north SeaKeppel FeLS reinforces its reputation for excellent execution and customer focus with the successful rejuvenation of semisubmersible drilling rig Ocean Patriot.

At 31 years of age, Ocean Patriot could have been retired. However, after a year of rejuvenation at Keppel FELS’ yard, the mammoth semisubmersible drilling rig is given a new lease of life, headed no less than for the harsh environment of the North Sea.

The rig had been undergoing refurbishment and upgrading works since June 2013 and was recently redelivered by Keppel FELS to Diamond Offshore. Underscoring

Keppel’s emphasis on safety, the project achieved more than 1.6 million man-hours without lost-time incident. A ceremony to mark the safe completion was held on 9 June 2014, where Diamond Offshore expressed its appreciation for Keppel’s safe and reliable delivery of Ocean Patriot.

Mr Anant Shukla, Keppel FELS’ Senior Project Manager said, “This was a challenging project given the age of Ocean Patr iot and the

requirements needed for work in the North Sea.

“ O u r e x p e r i e n c e o f constructing rigs suited for North Sea conditions and our understanding of Diamond Offshore’s requirements from past projects enabled us to anticipate their needs and deliver it to their highest satisfaction.

“This success was possible d u e t o t h e e x c e l l e n t team work between our companies, exemplary efforts

and hard work throughout the duration of the project.”

Work on the rig included the fabrication and installation of four 24-foot diameter s tab i l i t y co lumns and new lower hull inboard pontoon sponsons, as well as upgrading of the living quarters and the critical electrical and safety systems. Following delivery, the rig will be chartered to Shell for work at the Fram field in the UK sector of the North Sea. keppelite

Advancing safety knowledge

Undergirding its commitment to creating a safe workplace, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M)’s business units continue to create and tap on opportunities for the inculcation and exchange of good safety practices.

FIRST TRAINING CeNTRe IN NANTONGOn 9 June 2014, Keppel Nantong became the first shipyard in Nantong, China, to set up a training centre that focuses on safety.

The safety training centre was opened by Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation, at a ceremony attended by clients, contractors, and government officials from

Nantong Safety Supervision Bureau, Nantong Gangzha District Government and Nantong Gangzha Economy Development Zone.

Located within the shipyard, the training centre wil l provide safety induction courses to all yard workers, including those employed by Keppel’s subcontractors. The classes will cover knowledge of safety in specific work conditions, such as working at heights and in confined spaces.

Apart from safety trainings, the centre will also provide classes on functional skills, such as welding and Basic English.

The opening of the training centre also kickstarted a month-long safety campaign at the shipyard.

leARNING exCHANGeAccording to Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI), being struck by falling objects is statistically the second most common cause of workplace fatalities in Singapore.

To better mitigate such potential hazards, various indust ry p layers came together to share best safety practices at “Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme” (DROPS) Forum co-sponsored by Keppel O&M on 22 May 2014, and the “Managing

Workp lace Safety and Health in Marine Industry” seminar organised by ASMI on 20 May 2014. Speakers from Keppel FELS shared their knowledge at both events.

M r Yo n g C h e e M i n , Director (Health, Safety and Environment & Special Projects) of Keppel O&M remarked, “It is imperative to raise awareness on the prevent ion of dropped objects in the offshore and marine industry, where risks are high if comprehensive preventive measures are not in place. These forums aim to review and enhance the industry’s work processes.” keppelite

Sustainable cities take centrestageSingapore, renowned for its success as a highly urbanised city that has given priority to sustainable development way ahead of its time, hosted a confluence of three major conventions – the World Cities Summit, Singapore International Water Week and Cleanenviro Summit Singapore. Keppel, with its strong track record in contributing to sustainable development through its property and infrastructure divisions, was a key partner for all three events, in its capacity as a sponsor as well as a participant.

Recent history has shown that urbanisation is proceeding at an unprecedented scale around the world. According to research, by the middle of the century, 70% of the global population will live in cities. Although cities will be the engines of economic growth, they wi l l a lso present many challenges that are associated alongside urbanisation, industrialisation and economic development.

While many have identified c i t i e s a s con t r ibu to r s to climate change, cities are simultaneously also pioneering solutions to some of these issues.

Against this backdrop, global leaders, mayors, and industry experts in sustainable urban development shared and exchanged the i r ideas during the World Cities Summit (WCS), Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) and CleanEnviro Summit Singapore (CESS) which were held on 1 to 5 June 2014.

She shared one of her experiences at the hotels, “One day, we were craving for the famous ‘Sein Ta Lone’ mangoes, and mentioned it in passing to our driver (arranged by the hotel) while we were out. That evening, one of the hotel’s staff came by and brought us a plate of beautifully-cut mangoes which I greedily wolfed down within seconds!

“It later occurred to me that our driver Tony must have told the hotel staff to get the mangoes for me. That was indeed an exemplary case of going the extra mile.”

Acknowledging Mr Teo’s pioneering work, Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of Keppel Corporation, shared, “Even before the corporate function and the title of CFO was conceptualised, Soon Hoe had defined and set the standard for corporate f inancia l management. He was Keppel’s in-house corporate and investment banker. He was known to structure complex deals, negotiate the terms and set the price.”

Recalling the many highlights of his four decade long service, Mr Teo remarked, “I have served four Chairmen and five CEOs…what a journey! In 1974, the profit of the company was $32 million. So in nearly forty years, we have grown about 50 times. Our profit without the exceptions last year was about $1.5 billion. So that made, for me and for many in the room, all those long days and nights, all those burnt weekends and those weekend travels worthwhile.”

“Keppel has been very fortunate to have Soon Hoe served in many critical role

in the Group. As a CFO, the name Teo Soon Hoe is legendary in the market place and for many of us, he will always remain fondly as GFD.

“Upon graduation, Soon Hoe joined Keppel Shipyard in 1975 as an Assistant in what was called the Management Services Unit. It was a sort of think-tank unit where members brainstormed and worked on ideas to grow businesses in Keppel. Soon Hoe soon displayed his ingenuity, innovative spirit and entrepreneurial drive to grow Keppel’s business.

“And he had bold vision. In 1979, after extensive study of how credit unions operated overseas, Soon Hoe started the Keppel Group Co-Operative Credit Union. At the same time, he became General Manager of Shing Loong Credit (later renamed Shing Loong Finance). These initiatives were to form the seeds of Keppel’s banking and financial services division.

“In 1980, Soon Hoe returned to Keppel Shipyard as Finance Manager to assist in anchoring another turning point in Keppel’s history – the listing of Keppel Shipyard on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

dr lee Boon yang ChairmanKeppel Corporation

“Soon Hoe clearly belongs to the generation of Keppelites well known for their “Can Do!” spirit and imbued with

a tenacity to pursue that is second to none. As a colleague from the time I joined the Keppel Group as a Senior Executive Director up to the time I retired as an Advisor, I was privileged to have been able to see at close proximity this spirit at work in him. “ H e d i s p l a y e d g r e a t fortitude and had borne more than his fair share of heavy lifting when the Group was re-positioning itself against the backdrop of the global economic downturn in the 1990s. He did not disappoint me when I bounced off him strategies and explored with him ideas for taking the Group forward. He displayed a deep commitment to his role and responsibility as a senior member of the Keppel management team.

“His austere approach in financial matters enabled the Group to emerge stronger with the turn of the global economic cycle and rise to new heights of profitability. This was a clear testimony to his uncanny ability to build up quickly our war chest which enabled our key business units across the Group to re-organise effectively and seize profitable business opportunities. “On behalf of our Keppel stakeholders and my own behalf, I wish to thank Soon Hoe for being an exemplary

Spurring Innovations

Prime solutionWith a total daily workforce o f b e t w e e n 1 5 , 0 0 0 to 17 ,000 d i rec t and subcontracted workers, Keppel Shipyard has been working closely with its vendors and contractors to improve work processes and productivity, as part of its continuous efforts in innovation and operations excellence.

I n e a r l y 2 0 1 3 , t h e shipyard rallied some of its contractors under the Partnerships for Capability Transformat ion (PACT) programme, an initiative by SPRING Singapore, to look into upgrading their blasting systems which are used to prime the vessels’ surfaces for paint jobs.

This culminated in the development of a semi-automated system which reduced manpower required in a blasting operation by 30%, from 20 to 14 men. The improved system also led to a reduction in grit usage by 15-20% as the release of blasting material is now better controlled by the new valve and used more efficiently.

The successful collaboration between the shipyard and its contractors, supported

by a government agency, was highlighted by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Minister of State for Trade & Industry, in the Singapore Parliament in May 2014.

K o h W e i H a n g , o n e o f K e p p e l S h i p y a rd ’s management trainees who initiated the review of the blasting operation as part of an Innovative Quality Circle (IQC) project, explained, “During a blasting job, abrasive medium or grit are shot at high speed from a blaster gun affixed to a hose to remove impurities such as barnacles and rust. One blasting system can support a number of blasters.

“The previous blast ing system was not optimal as one or more workers were required to man the pot that contained the blasting material, depending on the size of the project. These workers had to manually turn on and off the valve that controls the release of grit to all the blasters at the same time, and to refill the pot when it is empty.

“Even though the blasting system is operated by our subcontractors, we took the time to experience the whole process first-hand so that we

can understand and work with them to improve on it. Many of Keppel Shipyard’s contractors are local small and medium enterprises (SME) which may not have the resources to focus on innovation, so government schemes l ike the PACT programme are helpful. With some innovation, we can in fact reduce our reliance on manual labour and increase productivity.”

The solution turned out to be a simple but effective idea

The new semi-automated blasting system allows workers firing the blasters to control output of the blasting material directly instead of relying on other workers to do that. This results in savings in grit usage as well as higher productivity

of replacing the manually operated on-off ball valve with an automatic plunger-type metering valve that can be controlled directly by the individual blasters.

To date, 64 such systems are being used in Keppel Shipyard for ship repair and conversion jobs. A second batch of 258 systems will be used by Keppel Shipyard’s con t r a c to r s a f t e r t he application for co-funding by SPRING Singapore gets approved. keppelite

“People make decisions not just with their heads, but also with their hearts. In negotiations, I need to connect w i th my counterparts intellectually, emotionally – and if it’s a cross-cultural negotiation – also culturally.”

This is the wisdom shared by Professor Tommy Koh, Singapore’s Ambassador-At-Large, during the 13th Grow Beyond Talk that had “Bridging Cultures” as a prominent theme.

Recent l y named the Great Negotiator of 2014 by Harvard University, Professor Koh emphasised the importance of heeding sensitivities and nuances in cross-cultural negotiations. This is especially apt for a global conglomerate like Keppel, which has business dealings in over 30 countries.

He also related memorable challenges faced in the course of his illustrious career, inc luding the n e g o t i a t i o n o f t h e

Free Trade Agreement between Singapore and the US.

Eschewing the traditional lecture format, Professor Koh invited questions from the audience comprising Board of Directors, senior management, Outstanding Keppelite Awards recipients and Inspiring Leadership Summit graduates from across the Group’s global operations.

As a memento, the audience took home cop ie s o f The Tommy Koh Reader

He dedicated the book to his personal assistants, past and present, describing them as “all the wonderful men and women who worked with me in all my jobs.”

Professor Koh noted, “It is important for us to break down barriers and to show respect and appreciation for the people who help us in our lives.”

Sixteen Keppelites braved the rain and roughed it out at the Outward Bound School in Pulau Ubin, an island off Singapore, from 4 – 6 June 2014. The team, comprising Keppel ites from across the Group, fondly called themselves ‘Ubinites’ for the three days of self-discovery and leadership training.

Hayley Teo, Market ing O f f i c e r f r o m K e p p e l Shipyard, one of the only two girls in the group, recounts her memorable experiences as the diverse team bonded over the three-day programme:

dAy 1: SelF-dISCOVeRy A good half day was spent delving deeper into our results from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test. We were able to better understand psychological and behavioural preferences of ourselves and of our opposites, which will help in our daily lives.

Challenge of the day would be outdoor cooking, as smearing toothpaste at the bottom of pots to prevent accumulation of soot were definitely foreign to us girls without outfield experience. It was an eye-opening and satisfying experience as the team whipped up a meal in mess tins by the beach. Surprisingly yummy, despite the aesthetic atrocity!

dAy 2: jUNGle TReKKINGBonds were forged as the group bashed through the jungle, navigating with a compass and a map. Everyone had an opportunity to put their leadership skills to test as we had to lead the team to conquer different obstacles planted along the way. We also took time to reflect on our attempts to move away from our psychological preferences in leading the team and overcoming obstacles.

A l though the sudden downpour upped the challenge and prolonged the trekking, spirits were kept high as the team members cheered each other on. Exhausted by the day’s activities, we were delighted by a sumptuous buffet spread and secretly thankful that we did not have to cook again.

dAy 3: AGAINST GRAVITy ANd CURReNTAll for the team! We took on various challenges such

as high obstacles and jetty jumps to earn credits in exchange for more pipes, ropes and barrels to build a durable raft.

With a team comprising mainly of yardmen, building the raft was a piece of cake. We then roughed it out against the strong current on our sturdy raft. Camaraderie was stronger than ever. keppelite

Before being posted to China, Jefferson Lim only indulged in the occasional drink during festive seasons. Today, after more than five years working in the country as the project manager of Keppel Land China’s Stamford City in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, Jefferson can summon the ability to down Chinese white wine like water whenever the occasion calls for it.

The 37-year-old recounted, “The biggest challenge I faced when I was first po s t ed to Ch ina was adjusting to the way of life in the country, including the culture of drinking during business discussions as a form of socialising. Very often, we have to drink during business meals and

Active assimilation I have to be very mindful not to overdo it so as to stay sober, yet at the same time convey respect for our partners’ customs.

“However, as the saying goes, ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’. I am glad that I had adapted quickly and am now rather a c cu s tomed w i th t he Chinese way of doing things. I have also picked up some of Jiangyin’s local dialects, which sound like Japanese to me!” he laughed.

O n S t a m f o r d C i t y , Keppe l Land ’s p ro jec t i n J i angy in , J e f fe r son shared, “The project is a mixed-use development which compr i ses both residential and commercial components. As a project

manager, I have to ensure that the various components are completed on time, to good quality, within budget and in compliance with the local regulations. We have to be especially vigilant in the latter aspect as different cit ies have different regulations and customs.”

Having spent a few years in China, the soft-spoken Jefferson has since made many local friends from al l walks of l i fe . They sometimes go on day trips and the most recent trip was to Anhui where they scaled steep mountains and explored ancient caves.

A self-confessed history buff, one of the things that Jefferson enjoys most about

working in China is the rich Chinese culture and the plethora of historical places of interests where he can spend the entire weekend exploring. Historical sites that he has visited include the Fujian Tulou, earthen rural dwellings unique to the Hakka people, built between the 12th and 20th centuries.

On the potential of China for Keppel Land, Jefferson enthused, “There is so much land and bountiful opportunities here. To promote active ageing, a morn ing of bowl ing fun at SAFRA Toa Payoh was o rgan i sed by the Keppe l Vo lunteers for 33 elderly residents from Thye Hua Kwan (THK) Bedok Radiance Seniors Activity Centre (SAC) on 31 May 2014.

The par t i c ipants were charged with enthusiasm as the volunteers briefed them on the basics of the game and demonstrated the various positions and movements involved, from holding the ball to the swing and release.

The wellbeing and safety of the elderly was top priority fo r the 22 vo lunteer s even as the participants became absorbed in the game. Volunteers helped the elder ly folks warm up before the game by guiding them through some stretching exercises. Lighter bowling balls meant for the elderly were also provided to the participants.

As the games progressed, the excitement in the air became more palpable as the elderly and volunteers alike cheered each other on with every bowling ball

that knocked into the pins. Jessica Leong, Marketing Manager of Mar ina at Keppel Bay shared, “It lifted the spirits and confidence of many elderly participants when they hit the pins.”

“It was an invigorating experience for everyone, even for those who were not bowling, as they were cheering the others on excitedly. This is a refreshing activity and we could see that the elderly residents really enjoyed themselves,” said Leong Ai Kuen, Human Resource Execut i ve of Keppel FELS.

With the last frame played, signalling the end of the game, the part ic ipants proceeded to chitchat and bond over a hearty lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Not knowing that they could bowl so well, many of the elderly participants surprised themselves that Saturday morning. It goes to show that sports has no age barriers after all! keppelite
