The following have been rated at world standard: Physical Geography, Environmental Geoscience

In the 2012 QS World University subject rankings UQ scored: 18th in Environmental Science, 58th in Natural Sciences and in the top 100 in Geography and Earth and Marine Sciences

Geographers study patterns and processes of natural and built environments and of human activities, and their causes and consequences. There is a strong emphasis on practical experience through fieldwork. There is also an opportunity to participate in a field trip through Northern Queensland to meet with practitioners of Environmental Management and understand its applications in the field.

GEMS – Geography and Environmental Management Study GEMS is involved in a wide variety of leisurely

pursuits; the club also provides academic opportunities such as research seminars, industry nights and chances to interact with postgrads and staff in social settings.

OOPS – Organisation of Planning Students OOPS targets its events to all undergraduate and

postgraduate town planning students. Their main focus is to provide social and professional events that are highly relevant and enjoyable for our members.

Alumni• Guy Gibson was one of UQ’s earliest graduates of the Bachelor of

Regional and Town Planning program (BRTP), now he is helping to shape the profession in Queensland. He is on the board of ‘Urban Futures Brisbane and is Lend Lease’s general manager for their communities business in Queensland.

• Cole Gainer is finishing his studies while working in the UN's Department of Economic and Social Development (DESA) and is currently working on projects which look at climate change and managing water scarcity and drought in post-conflict countries.

“My international regulatory frameworks class was like a UN internship crash course. It introduced me to a majority of the treaties, conventions, and concepts that are hands down what every environmental management graduate should know,”

• Jo Nightingale’s studies in Geographical Information Science (GIS) led her to NASA. She now works as a Research Scientist with Sigma Space Corporation and is also a contractor in the Terrestrial Information Systems Branch at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre.
