    When the BBC

    reported on the

    macabre murders

o 20 albinos in anzania during

2008 it sent out a clear message:

witchcra plays a very large rolein Arica.

    Tose albinos were brutally

    murdered because witch doctors

claim their body parts are potent

or magic charms. In one case a

    ather with albinism was hacked

to death in ront o his wie by a

gang. Aer his uneral his grave

had to be covered in cement to

stop robbers getting to his body

to take the rest o him.

    Te act that people are

    willing to brutally murder

    someone because a witch doctor

says so is testament to the power

    such people hold. Spiritualism

and the ear o demons permeate

    every area o Arican society

rom the poorest paid armer to

    those holding high government

    positions. Many inuential

    people look to witch doctors

or guidance and it serves as areminder that dierent cultures

    hold to dierent worldviews.

    anzanian witch doctors are

    allowed an ocial licence to

practice a concept that is alien

    to us in the West.

    Aim International has people

    working all across Arica and

many o them share the same

    story: syncretism is a problem.

    Because spiritualism and

    animism are so deeply ingrained

into Aricans psyche they fndit hard to break away rom those

belies. Even when they begin to

ollow Jesus they still hold onto

    their old superstitions and ways

    to appease the spirits. Partner

    that with poor theological

training or pastors, and that is

    when we see Christianity and

    spiritualism combined. Tere are

    common stories o how churches

    have no problem allowing the

local witch doctor to take part intheir services.

    Well hear in this magazine

rom a number o our workers

who are dealing with this issue.

    o them, these arent simply

    stories they read about. Its

    everyday lie.

Freedom can beound in Jesus, the destroyer o

death! Yet mucho Arica is inbondage to theear o death. This ear leads

many to puttheir hope in thespirit world.

    Because spiritualism

    and animism are

    so deeply ingrained

    into Aricans psyche

    they fnd it hard to

Why did God wakerbb ma upto start her Bible

study early? It wasbecause the witchdoctor was on herway.

    The Bible and the drum

    As airly new

    missionaries to the

    feld we went to bed

one evening with the sound o

    the witch doctors drum beating

    heavily in stark contrast to

    the total silence that normally

accompanied us to sleep.Very early in the morning,

    just beore daybreak, the Lord

woke me up and asked me to

begin my quiet time. It soon

    became apparent why, as the

    sound o Me Manthabisengs

    drum grew steadily closer. She

    was the local witch doctor.

While I stood and opened our

    huts door, the witchdoctor

    came into our courtyard. As

    she knelt down and continued

    beating with a glazed-over stare

in her eyes, I let out a small

    plea o prayer.

    Te usual greetings didnt

phase her. Even asking her i

shed like some coee or tea

wouldnt make her blink. So I

    excused mysel and went inside

    or my Bible and coee.

    hMe Manthabiseng lived in

    Lesotho amongst the Basotho,

    a Bantu-speaking people.

    The Basotho have lived in

    southern Arica since around

    the fth century.

    I returned and proceeded

to let her know that she could

    drum away to her hearts

content, but that I was going to

carry on with what I had been

doing as well. As I opened my

    Bible and began reading out

loud her spell was broken. Sheasked me to bring her out our

    Mosotho mum. I wouldnt

    comply and wondered mysel

why she wasnt coming out. So,

    the drumming began again.

    However, I began reading

and, sure enough, the Word o

    God broke through a second

    time. Aer several rounds o

this the witch doctor had had

enough and le with the words

Ill be back! to which I called

    out: Youre always welcome

    here. Come back anytime.

By mid-year, 2004, ourtime in that little village was

coming to a rapid close. It

was then that the Lord began

    revealing Himsel to the witch

    doctor and gave her some

    pretty clear instructions. Tings

    happened very quickly.

But this time she threw her

hands up in the air and lied

her voice in praise to the One

    who seeks and searches or

those He has called His own.

    The ex-witchdoctor in

    Robbie told Te African

    there was always a strong

    eeling that demonic powers

    were continually attacking her,

    which oen maniested itsel in

    very physical ways.

    Robbie recalled that when

    she talked about everyday

    things her voice was normal.

However, all o this wouldchange once she began to speak

    about Scripture. Her throat

    would contract and she would

fnd it hard to orce the words

    AIM was only 14 years

    old when Margaret

    Halliday was born in

    Glasgow. Her amily emigrated

to Canada when she was a

young girl but, years later, it wasin Canada that she elt the Lord

calling her to the mission in

Arica. Aer training in a Bible

College she started her service in

    Kenya in January 1939.

    Aer working in a number

o places she settled among the

Nandi people in Kapsowar and it

was there that she met widower

    Herbert Hanson Young, whose

wie had passed away during their

    service in Molepolole, Botswana.

As an engineer he was involved in

    constructing churches, including

    the church at Kapsowar. Aer

    leaving Kapsowar he returned

a year later, in 1954, and they

    married in 1955. ogether, they

    were involved in church-planting

    in rural areas and established

    both clinics and schools in

    remote villages.

    While they never had any

    children o their own, Margaret

had trained in childcare and was

    heavily involved in the education

    o women and girls. However,

    her inuence has extended

    beyond the classroom into the

    higher echelons o society. Te

    Honourable Daniel Arap Moi,

    second President o Kenya, had

    recalled to riends o Margaret

how she taught him when he

    was a boy.

    Likewise, another o her

pupils, Benjamin Kipkorir, laterbecame the Kenyan Ambassador

to the USA as well as Chairman

    o the Kenya Commercial

Bank. He still speaks highly o

    Margarets inuence in his lie.

    Margaret aced many

    challenges during her service,

and no more so than when

    Herbert passed away while on

    home assignment in the UK.

    Despite it being a heartbreaking

    time or her, Margaret

aerwards elt that the Lord still

had more or her to do so she

    returned to Kenya. Altogether,

she dedicated 40 years o her lie

    to serving Aricans in Kenya.

    Aer her retirement she

returned to the UK and lived

in Essex with her riend Grace

    Saunders. Te Lord called

Grace home 10 years ago and

He opened a way or Margaret

to return to her homeland in

    Scotland. She has spent the

    last eight years in Auchlochan

    Christian Care Village and,

    today, despite her poor eyesight

    and immobility, her avourite

expression is: I couldnt be in a

    nicer place.

    There are very ew

    missionaries who can

    claim to have lived

    through the majority o

    Arica Inland Missions

    existence, but that is

    exactly what Margaret

    Young can do ater she

    celebrated her 100th

    this year.

    In his bookransforming

    Worldviews, Paul

    Hiebert defnes the term

    worldview as the maps they

have o reality that they use or

    living.People in dierent cultures

    have dierent worldviews,

    dierent maps that guide them

as they interpret the reality o

the world in which they live.

    Tey think dierently. Tey act

    dierently. Tey evaluate the

    world dierently.

Only so much good to go

    around

    Te Azande believe that within

each society there is a limited

    amount o good available or

    the members o that society.

    Tis good can be material,

    physical, and even spiritual.

Since this good is limited, it

    needs to be shared equally

among all the members o that

    society. I one person begins

    to develop themselves and

advances in any way, the othermembers o the society believe

that this person is taking a

larger part o the good than has

been allotted or him. Tey are

compelled to do all they can to

bring that person back down to

their level so that the balance o

    good can be maintained.

    Living with evil spirits

Te Azande live in ear o the

evil spirits. Tey have one o,

    i not the, most complicated

    witchcra system in Arica. Its

been said that the Azande eat,

    Giant rainbow

    and the everyday

    The Challenge

    AIM has been preaching the

gospel in the Zande area in

    DR Congo and CAR since

the early 1920s. Why have its

    truths not ully permeated the

    Zande culture? I believe the

biggest challenge we have in our

    ministry to this people group

    is to determine what aspects

    o the believers worldview

    have not been transormed

by the gospel. We then need

    concentrated teaching at all

    levels church leaders, womens

    groups, youth organizations,

    childrens activities, medical

workers, etc. to conront theseareas with the biblical truths.

    oday, when even the most

    well-meaning Zande believer

    comes ace-to-ace with a

    problem, he searches through

the teaching he has had on living

    the victorious Christian lie. He

oen does not fnd an answer

    to his specifc problem there.

So, he returns to his traditional

    teaching. He oen fnds an

answer there so he tries it and

oen comes up with a positive

    answer. His aith has been

    challenged by the problem. His

    lack o a deeper understanding

    o Christs liberating power

orces him to return to the ways

o the past that give glory to the

evil one and inhibit him rom

    growing in his aith.

    Back in 2004 when

    Rachel and I were

    leading the Digo imo

    team in anzania we had

    the privilege o inviting our

neighbour to join us or a teamday that we were holding at our

    house.

    Every Tursday we would

meet as a team to pray, study

Gods word and learn how to

be better church planters. I was

    particularly looking orward to

this team day as our neighbour

    had agreed to be interviewed

so that we could gain a better

    understanding o what part

    he played in the community

and to try and fnd out his

    particular worldview.

    Picture the scene: ten

    missionaries sitting in a

mud hut joined by the most

    prominent witch doctor in

the village (there were fve in

    our village alone). Shabani

was happy or the team to

    ask as many questions as

we liked about his work. He

    seemed relaxed and the team

    were eager to ask questions.

We started o well, with a

    number o good questions, but

then we got to one that I was,

    quite rankly, embarrassed to

    translate. Te question was:

Do you like being a witch

    doctor? Having lived in the

community or a longer periodthan the team it was quite

obvious to me that the answer

    would be Yes. Witch doctors

were held in high esteem and

    they weregiven lots o

    gis or their

    labours.

    O course

    he enjoyed

    being a witch doctor. However,

    Shabanis response shocked

me. He said: No, I hate being

a witch doctor. Pressing him a

    little urther he explained that

he had no choice in the matter

because both his ather and his

    grandather were witch doctors

and thereore he had to be one

too. He didnt enjoy his role but

he elt duty bound to provide

or his community in this way.

    I learnt a very simple

    but important lesson that

    aernoon: when we reach out

with the gospel we must listen

to the person we are trying to

reach. I thought I knew what

    Shabani would answer but

    I hadnt actually asked him.

From that day on I viewed my

    neighbour in a very dierent

    light. Rather than seeing him

as an enemy o the gospel, I elt

sorry or him a man needing

a Saviour just like you and me.

Aricas central regionprovides some o thegreatest challengesbut also greatestopportunities or theGospel.

    Its 40C in Maelings cooler

rainy season, and being one o the

remotest areas in Chad means that

simply reaching the village is an extreme

    experience in itsel.

    Aer ying rom Chads capital,

NDjamena, you land in Ba Illi and its

straight into a jeep. Te hal hour journey

takes you to a small boat, and when you

make it over to the other side o the river

there is a walk over hot sand beore you

    reach Maelings green grass.

Yet, despite its remoteness, the message

o Jesus is reaching people through AIMs

Korean workers who are living out the

Gospel message there. Tey are part o a

team teaching in a primary school built by

AIM, where children arrive every day rom

miles around to laugh and learn.

Islam also has a presence in the area,

which is represented by the mosque in the

centre o the village, but it exists alongside

Christianity in harmony. Pray or AIMs

    Living among Muslims

    here you quickly realise

    that the way many o

    them live their lives doesnt

match up to the Islam taught in

    the mosques.

Where in the Quran does it

teach you to protect your baby

boy rom evil spirits by placinga knie next to him in the crib?

Or how about soaking a prayer

rom the Quran in water and

using that water to protect your

house rom evil spirits? And did

you know that the reason that

man has a physical disability is

because he talked while in the

    bathroom?

    Tis is olk or popular

Islam; a world where i you

comment on how well a baby

    is growing her grandmother

will quickly utter a blessing and

youll be told in no uncertain

    terms such things arent said.

    Dancing with spirits

    While not always spoken about,

    the clues are everywhere. You

wonder why so many womencareully hide away any strands

o their hair that came out aer

    brushing. But when you realise

that someone could use it to

curse them it begins to make

    perect sense. At other times

it is much more overt, such as

    the special ceremonies where

    certain women dance with

the Madjini or spirits. In other

amilies we fnd that there is a

    generational spirit that is passed

While it is commonto hear how

    syncretism has

    crept into Arican

    Christianity, it is not

    alone. Islams rigorousteachings are also

    acing compromise.

    down the emale line. Whether

    hidden or overt, this mixing

    o classical Islam with more

animistic belies is in reality a

    broad undercurrent that helps

many cope with the trials and

    diculties o everyday lie.

And it is the special domain o

    women.

    Spiritual walls

    Such practices have the

    strongest hold on those to

    whom the ocial teachings

    o Islam are least available

and have the least to oer.

    With limited access to the

    mosque and little instruction

in the Quran it isnt hard to

    understand why many women

dont realise how ar they are

    wandering rom its teachings in

    their search or protection rom

    evil spirits.

    Our team continues to

    come up against constant walls

as we try to reach women here.

It seems that the existence o

    such dabbling (or even ull

immersion) in the spirit worldadds yet another spiritual

    barrier that stops these women

    rom coming to know Jesus.

    Pray or these women; pray

that as they seek blessing and

    protection they would come to

know Him who came to destroy

the works o the devil (1 John

3:8). And pray or us that we

    would be Gods instruments to

bring His truth, His light and

    His power to these islands.

the spirit world adds yet another

spiritual barrier that stops these women

    rom coming to know Jesus.

    he 28 year old woman

    was a member o

    the choir at the local

    church at Banda, DR Congo.

She was also was a medium

    and possessed a garden in

her plot o land. It was in this

garden that she would make her

    incantations.

    One day, she was surprised

by a deacon rom the church

while she was in the middle o

    reciting her incantations. She

had a large snake and a dognext to her and the deacon,

    not understanding what was

going on, cried out in order to

    save her. However, the woman

    was surprised by the strangers

    interruption and became very

    angry. She demanded that he

    immediately go away without

    looking back but the deacon

insisted that he could not leave

when she was in such grave

    danger.

    When the deacon came

close to the choir member she

    violently grabbed one o his

fngers, put in into her mouth,

and began to roll to the ground

    with enough strength to break

    it o.

    The demonic world

    maniests itsel across

    Arica in a very physical

    way, no more so than

    when the church

    is involved. In an

    example o that battle,

    a church deacon was

    violently attacked by a

    member o his church
