Prof. Zhisheng Niu graduated from Northern Jiaotong University (currently Beijing Jiaotong University), Beijing, China, in 1985, and got his M.E. and D.E. degrees from Toyohashi University of Technology, Toyohashi, Japan, in 1989 and 1992, respectively. After spending 2 years in Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Kawasaki, Japan, he joined with Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1994, where he is now a professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering and deputy dean of the School of Information Science and Technology. He is also an adjunction professor of Beijing Jiaotong University. His current research interests include teletraffic theory, mobile Internet, radio resource management of wireless networks, and integrated communication and broadcast networks. He has published more than 100 journal and conference papers so far.

From October 1995 to February 1996, he was a visiting research fellow of the Communications Research Laboratory of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Japan. From February 1997 to February 1998, he was a visiting senior researcher of Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi Ltd. He received the PAACS Friendship Award from the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan in 1991, the Best Paper Award (1st prize) from the 6th Chinese Youth Conference on Communication Technology in 1999, and the Best Paper Award from the 13th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (APCC) in 2007.

Dr. Niu is a fellow of the IEICE, a senior member of the IEEE, Director of Asia-Pacific Board of IEEE Communication Society, and council member of Chinese Institute of Electronics.

Prof. Jintong Lin earned his bachelor’s degree in Physics from Peking University, his master’s degree in Optical Communication from BUPT and his doctorate in Optoelectronics from Southampton University, UK. He went to UK in 1985 and worked at Southampton University where he was one of team member of the Fiber Laser/Amplifier group, whose invention has been generally recognized as “a revolution in communication technology”. From 1990 to 1993, he served as Research Fellow of SERC at King’s College London. In 1993 he

returned to China. Since then he has been working as full professor and taken a series of administrative positions as well.

From March of 1998 to the end of 2007, Prof. Jintong Lin has served as President of BUPT for about 10 years. During his presidency, he made a great contribution to making BUPT a first-class research-oriented university which enjoys national and international reputation.

Dedicated himself to research of optical communication for 31 years, Jintong Lin has published over 300 academic papers and presentations. He served as chairman or TPC chairman of international academic conference more than 10 times. Currently, he is the Standing Committee Member of the Science and Technique Advisory Committee in the Ministry of Information Industry, Vice Director of the China Institute of Commutations (CIC). He has won many academic awards in China and received many academic prizes and honorary titles from foreign countries, such as Fellow of IET, UK, the Electronics Divisional Board Premium for Best Electronics Letters, the Honorary Doctor of Science from University of Southampton and the Honorary Fellow of Queen Mary College, University of London. Prof. Deng is a dean and PhD tutor of School of Electronic Engineering, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). He obtained PhD degree at Tsinghua University of China in 1994. Since March 1996, he joined BUPT to be a faculty member, and was appointed as vice president of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1997 to 2000. From March 2002 to April 2003, he worked as a senior visited scholar in University of South California, USA. He is a senior member of China Mechanical Engineering Society, member of Machine Tools Special Committee, one of Editors of magazine "Manufacturing Technology & Machine Tools (Chinese)" and "Journal of Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications", senior member of China Telecommunication Society, member of China Engineering Graphics Society, and member of China Industry Automation and Integrated Standardization Committee.

Since 1996, Prof. Deng has focused the research on the field of intelligent CAD/CAM technology, telecommunication system and terminal, Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and etc. He has gained many research achievements, including a study on precise turning machining process of non-round parts (2nd progress award of the science and technology of Ministry of Education, China), intelligent sculpt machining technology of complex configuration (golden prize of 46th EURECA Invention award), and intelligent CAD/CAM system (2nd progress award of Science and Technology of Ministry of Information Industry), speedy prototype machining technology, foundation theory and applied foundation research on biology machining process, industry automation and control, and intelligent telecommunication system.

Prof. Deng has been charge on more than 30 cooperated projects on international, national, and regional. He has published over 90 papers in archived journals and refereed conference proceedings, in which more papers have been indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP, and 2 translated monographs.

We are researching and commercializing measurement system of human and organization behaviors using

wireless systems using tiny sensors, controller, power, and wireless link. Sensing of human sounds "surveillance",

but rather we are targeting to let one to find his/her own opportunities, to achieve growth, creation, and better

manage life. Under the rapidly- changing and high-pressure economic climate, one is forced to focus on "problem

solving," but feel difficult to "find opportunities." Our "Business/Life Microscope" measures, analyses, and

intervenes the organizations and people to have enjoying life and get revitalized intrinsically based on 50,000 man

days of human behavior data.

Plenary Speech 2: Generalized Orthogonal Code Sequences and their Applications in Wireless Communications

Abstract:

In spread-spectrum and CDMA systems, radar and sonar ranging systems, global positioning systems,

channel estimations, synchronization, system identification, hardware testing, and so on, in order to reduce or

eliminate various interference, it is normally required to design a set of code sequences satisfying certain desirable

properties, such as orthogonal sequences. In traditional orthogonal code sequences such as Walsh sequences, the

orthogonality is destroyed whenever there is a relative shift between the code sequences. For generalized

orthogonal code sequences, however, mutually orthogonality can be achieved within a designed shift zone, called

orthogonal zone. In this talk, the concept of generalized orthogonality which in fact opens a new direction in code

sequence design, is introduced and extended, and the recent advances in the design and analysis of generalized

orthogonal code sequences are presented, followed by their typical applications in wireless communications.

Since few years MIMO systems are used to enhance channel capacity. The allowable spectrum bandwidth becomes more and more rare and expensive, which encourages the researchers in the field to exploit more advanced signal processing techniques. In recent years ‘Polarization Diversity’ proves that the capacity can be boosted under certain conditions.

In this Keynote, propagation geometric scattering models are presented in detail for 2D and 3D fields. It will be the basic model to simulate and calculate the different wave polarization and configuration. Some parameters are also explained such as Cross Polarization Ratio (XPR) and Space-Time Correlation. These parameters are necessary to understand the gain in channel capacity in function of the spatial configuration.

The impact of the CSI on the capacity is also studied and simulated in case of using the Water Filling principle in the transmitter side.

Each scattering process is represented by a matrix corresponding to the depolarization and the distortion of the electromagnetic wave. The validation of dual-polarized MIMO channels is examined and compared with the single-polarized MIMO channels. The simulation results demonstrate that the transmit and receive antenna correlations can be reduced, so that the channel capacity can be improved for dual-polarized or Multi-polarized MIMO channels. Finally, some conclusions and perspectives are shown with recent applications

Plenary Speech 4: A New Modulation-Dependent Precoding Scheme for MIMO Systems

Hotel Abstract: Over the last ten years, multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) systems have gained significant attention due to their promising improvement in system performance and capacity. A lot of work has been done on the transmit preprocessing, and several precoding schemes such as zero-forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE) and Tomlison-Harashima precoding (THP) have been proposed for multi-user MIMO downlink. In this paper, we propose a new modulation-dependent precoding scheme. Compared to the conventional precoding scheme which is independent of modulation signal, our new precoding scheme optimally selects modulation dimension to optimize system performance and maximize capacity. It is found that the new scheme can provide much better performance and much larger capacity than the conventional precoding schemes for multi-user MIMO downlink. Because our scheme scarifies modulation dimension and equivalently increases spatial dimension, it can significantly reduce interference and obtain overall performance gain. We also consider its application to distributed MIMO system with multiple transmitters and multiple receivers, and obtain significant performance improvement over the recently proposed interference alignment approach.

Invited Speech: Dr. Li Huang Title: Ultra-Low Power Wireless Design: Principles, Challenges, and Possible Solutions

Abstract:

In this presentation, we overview the ultra-low power wireless communication design. We cover both application and technology domains, and include both theoretical analysis and practical consideration. We also provide sufficient analytical, simulation, and experimental results. This presentation is divided into three parts. First, we will define the ultra-low power wireless communications and introduce its principles. Then, we will discuss potential solutions to achieve ultra-low power wireless communications. These include baseband signal processing design, Media Access Control (MAC) protocol design, cross-layer solution, system architecture selection, analog circuit-level design. Especially we will introduce IMEC’s main achievements developed in the past 8 years. Finally, we will point out the challenges that need to be addressed in practical implementation. This part will include the effect of imperfect integrated circuits, and interferences from neighboring networks. The possible solutions include the improved modulation schemes, enhanced signal processing algorithms, and coexistence study.

Invited Speech: Prof. Chin E. Lin Title: Mobile Vehicle Tracking and Following System on Telematics

Abstract:

A proposed idea for "follow the leader" to a motorcade team members is designed and organized on a simple Car PC by mobile communication. The system integrates GPS, 3.5G mobile communication, GIS map and MySQL database. When a motorcade is randomly gathered for a riding trip, the leader as well as all participating followers can join into the proposed Tracking and Following System (TFS) by easy setup process. The member positions in the same motorcade will be shown on the GIS map in real time The proposed TFS is capable to accept any new members and maintain all members being tracked with no loss. TFS operation is constructed by software algorithms to build the leader and follower's relationship quickly. System architecture and design concept are discussed for different scenarios of motorcade characteristics. Real world tests are demonstrated and verified for its system performance.

1. About Hotel Located in the central area of Zhong Guan Cun High-tech Garden, Beijing Friendship Hotel is in No. 1 South St. of Zhong Guan Cun in Haidian District with some famous site scene like Summer Palace, Winter Palace and Xiangshan, there are also some well-known universities including Beijing University and Tsinghua University. As the largest garden hotel in Asia, Beijing Friendship Hotel is recorded into World Architecture Annals published by Cambridge in UK for its large area and typical folk style. Its Chinese taste may be found in its garden architectures, and more history might be discovered with more understanding.
