Illinois New Teacher Collaborative 2

Message from the Director Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the Illinois New Teacher Collaborative’s Fifth Annual “Y2: Moving Beyond Survival” Conference! This is the only statewide conference in Illinois that is designed and planned by new teachers for new teachers. The conference is expressly designed to give you the chance to learn, network with new teacher colleagues, and reflect on your first year in the classroom. This conference would not be possible without the generous support of the State Farm Companies Foundation and the College of Education at Illinois. Their continued support of teaching and new teacher induction impacts many teachers and their students throughout Illinois. It is my sincere hope that this conference challenges and inspires you, helps prepare you for Y2, and strengthens your resolve to stay in the teaching profession and make a real impact on the lives of today’s youth. All the best!

Dr. Patricia Brady Director, Illinois New Teacher Collaborative

Breakout Sessions *repeated session Session A: Monday, June 23, 1:25-2:35

A1. Incorporating Technology in Your Classroom* (All Levels)

Loyalty Room Jason Pound, Urbana SD 116 Want to increase engagement and lighten your workload? By incorporating some user-friendly (and free) applications, you can collect more useful formative assessment data, give students more product options, and keep in touch with your community. Come and observe a walkthrough of some of this teacher’s favorite computer applications.

A2. Everybody is a Genius—Practical Strategies for Differentiation (3-12) Excellence Room Sally Belter, Hinsdale Central High School

In this session, we will look at the theories behind differentiated instruction and what classroom teachers can do to better tailor their lessons to the needs of their students. Practical strategies, activities, and classroom management techniques will be discussed.

A3. The Proactive Classroom* (EC-5)

Innovation Room Kathryn Endsley and Kathryn Hansen, Urbana SD 116 We will look at ways to develop a classroom environment that will help students learn to regulate their own behavior and learning. In addition, we will look at ways to address individual needs of students. Sometimes a student’s behavior may have the potential to escalate into an emotionally charged situation. Teachers can become aware of the signs of escalation and therefore be proactive to deescalate crisis situations.

A4. Interactive Read Alouds (EC-8)

Knowledge Room Patricia Braun, Benedictine University, Springfield

Reading aloud has many benefits when interactive. Several strategies for engaging students while reading aloud fiction and nonfiction will be demonstrated.

Biography of Original Freedom Writer Manuel V. Scott An original “Freedom Writer” whose story is told in the Hollywood movie, Freedom Writers, starring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank and Grey’s Anatomy’s Patrick Dempsey, Manuel Scott has devoted his life to equipping others with proven tools to succeed. A dynamic speaker and facilitator whose experiences have helped him inspire people of all ages and life stages, Scott travels around the world empowering leaders, servants, educators, and youth through powerful programs and presentations taken from his own life experiences. At the age of fourteen, Scott dropped out of school and began to fulfill his teacher’s awful prediction that he would either be dead or in jail by the age of eighteen. His use of drugs and alcohol eventually led to his involvement in criminal activities. He says, “When I look back, I now see that I was heading down a path that would have destroyed me.” However, due to an amazing transformation, he has defied all the odds stacked against him. “I was dismissed as ‘unreachable’ and ‘unteachable,’ and classified as an ‘English as a Second Language’ student” he says, “but something special happened and I love sharing that message with others.” The one time high school drop-out now holds degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and Trinity International University. He is currently working on his PhD in Chicago, IL and is the author of Take Matters Into Your Own Hands: Dream Now! Scott now speaks at universities, civic organizations, high and middle schools, retreats, seminars, and religious institutions. In 2005, he delivered the keynote address for the Lions Clubs International Convention in Hong Kong and inspired a coliseum of twelve thousand delegates from 192 countries with a message of hope. “I do not share my story to impress people,” Scott explains, “but to impress upon them some invaluable lessons that literally changed my life.” Whether in Houston or Hong Kong, Kansas City or Cairo, Los Angeles, or London, Scott carries a torchlight of hope into the recesses of dormant human potential and shows the gems that are sparkling there.
