3. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Did you know that …

• 13% of deaths in children occurs due to inadequate Exclusive Breast-Feeding(EBF)

• EBF children have a high IQ and improved immunity

• For continuous flow of milk, a mother should breastfeed/express milk after every 2-3 hours

• After the maternity leave, mothers are unable to Exclusively Breastfeed due to work commitments

• EBF reduces the risk of breast cancer

• EBF would save the world kshs 30trillion annually

3.1. The current breast feeding situation in our towns;

• We have very few or no public seats where a mother could sit and breastfeed her baby even in public.

• Our streets mainly in the cities are noisy, busy and unsafe for a mother and child to have conducive and uninterrupted moments of breastfeeding

• We lack public places that would offer privacy and cleanliness for pumping of breast milk for self-employed mothers, employed mothers in small shops, mothers travelling and shopping in various public economic hubs in our towns.

• The shopping malls, office hubs, the recreational centres, bus terminals, market places, sport areas and many other entities accessed by the public, lack the breastfeeding stations, which could be stressful for a visiting or shopping mother who would need the privacy and comfort to breastfeed her child. For the working mothers in these places find it impossible to express at their work areas.

Page 5: Table of Contents - globalgiving.org  · Web viewPromotion of good childcare and maternal health. Promotion of best parenting practices. Women empowerment through Skills Training

• We lack workplaces and public day-care centres as well as child friendly areas in public that could offer working nursing mothers the chances to bring their children near to their work areas and breastfeeding the children when they are hungry

Therefore, the installation of the Breastfeeding pods in the public places, would not only support nursing mothers to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months, but will also create a healthier society and friendly working nation that mothers can work and breastfeed.

4. BENEFITS OF EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING(EBF)

4.1.Benefits of EBF to mothers

• Every year of breastfeeding reduces risk of developing invasive breast cancer by 6%. • Improves work productivity • It reduces the risk of obesity and weight associated with pregnancy• Minimizes post-delivery depression• Physical/emotional bonding between mother and child is increased• Saves you time and money• Lowers chances of new pregnancies

4.2.Benefits of breastfeeding to Children

• It protects the baby against some infections and allergies • It provides a long term protection against chronic, non-communicable diseases such

as obesity, hypertension and diabetes• Promotes bonding between the baby and the child• Helps in baby’s growth and development (cognitive, physical, motor)• It contains the perfect nutrients that a baby needs in the first six months of life• Lowers Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS)

4.3.Benefits of breastfeeding to the Society Human milk is a unique natural resource for building brain power as well as health.

The only way to obtain it is through breastfeeding. If a community does not give women the support they need in order to breastfeed,

this valuable resource can be lost. On top of the obvious costs to the health care system due to associated illness,

society pays hidden costs of environmental degradation and the loss of learning potential in children. Breastfeeding is a key component of child-care.

Each generation of breastfed children lays the foundation for a future generation of healthy and productive workers

Breastfeeding provides a healthy, viable, non-polluting, non-resource intensive, sustainable and natural source of nutrition and sustenance.

5. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The proposed project is comprised of several different, but related activities:
