Preamble

The Powers book following was written by Joe Mack Powers of Knoxville, Tennessee in the 1970s. This was published as an integral part of McDougal / Smith / Carmack / Powers / Ramer Families. Which was published in a limited edition of 200 books. The Powers portion here traces the descendants of Thomas Powers son of Joseph Powers Jr. who was Joe Macks great great great grandfather. Thomas Frederick Powers (whose great great grandfather James {brother of Thomas} ) has scanned the Powers portion into electronic format for web publishing. Consequently I, Thomas, assume all responsibility for any errors of transcription. The book portion is intact as Joe Mack wrote it, save for two short introductory paragraphs on the first page. Further research since Joe Mack published his book had pretty well proved the relationship between Joe Mack and Thomas Frederick. Subsequent DNA testing in 2006 have shown these two to have identical YDNA.

There is an additional data package on this web site Powers Virginia South Carolina Timeline which links these two branches of the same family. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dnapower/history/genealogybooks.htm

Our oral tradition was that we were of Irish descent. Four brothers came to the US from Kilkenny County, Ireland prior to 1746 and settled in the Shenandoah Valley. About 80-85% of all Power/Powers in Ireland are from either Waterford or Kilkenny Counties. From there two went to SC, one stayed in Virginia and one went to Texas. We have not been able to ascertain any kinship in the Shenandoah Valley nor do we have a clue regarding kinship in Texas. We made a trip to Virginia in 1999 and traveled up and down the Shenandoah Valley stopping at many libraries, looking in phone books etc. There were about 100 Powers in the Roanoke phone directory at that time. What hard data we did get came from the Library of Virginia in Richmond and placed the Powers of interest in King & Queen, Chesterfield and Mecklenburg Counties. We found Joseph and Rachel in Mecklenburg County along with Sampson and William. All three of these names appear across the three counties named. James, Thomas, Joseph and William are repeated names in our family, but Sampson was a new given name to us. James, Thomas, William and Joseph are many in number from both of Joseph's sons. As of 2005 and more research we think the Shenandoah Valley may have come from the fact that the Roanoke, Dan and Staunton Rivers flow through the valley and Mecklenburg County which is east of the mountains. We further believe that the four brothers of Oral tradition were not the immigrants, but were some later generation. The two who came to South Carolina appear to be Joseph Jr. and William. A certainty is that James, was born in Virginia circa 1780. When the Powers came to SC they went to what is now Spartanburg County circa 1783 where Joseph had a land grant in 1785. James went on to Pickens County about 1830. Joseph and Rachel were the only ones of the Spartanburg settlers (in the 1790 Census) who had the right age and children of proper sex (4 sons under 16 and 3 daughters) to be our ancestor. Joseph's estate papers identify James and Thomas as sons with Sally and Sisaly as daughters. Joseph died in 1799 and Rachel in 1801. James stayed in SC and Thomas

went on to Tennessee and Alabama. William disappeared by time of the 1800 census in Spartanburg. He was likely a brother of Joseph. We think it likely that another son of Joseph Jr. was a William also. A William appears in Pickens County in the 1930 Census and is of the right age to be a brother of James and Thomas. Their path that we can trace was: King & Queen; Chesterfield and Mecklenburg Counties over the time period from 1746-1784. We do not have any information linking Joseph, Sampson or William in any specific manner. They were likely kin some way because of moving together. Also I do not have any specific linkage of Francis, Joseph and William who were the 3 family heads in Spartanburg County in the 1790 census. We do have data that the Sampson in Mecklenburg County had a son named William. I also noted that during one earlier tax enumeration Sampson had been responsible for taxes on that William's property. Joseph Jrs. wife was Rachel. Son Thomas was born in Mecklenburg County 1778 and James was born there in 1780. A later census in Alabama lists Thomas as having been born in South Carolina, but one of his sons subsequently stated that Thomas had been born in Virginia. There is evidence that Joseph was still in Mecklenburg in 1782, but gone in 1783. This would be about right for getting a land grant in SC. Move date seems to be 1783. Francis Powers kinship is totally unknown. He did get about twice as much land as Joseph. Francis is documented as being from Virginia, came to SC on a fishing trip during the Revolution was conscripted into service and taken prisoner during the siege and fall of Charleston. He was paroled to go back to Virginia, but then shows up in South Carolina to marry into his old lieutenant's family. His wife was Catherine Goodlett.

Beginning of Joe Mack Powers Book

Thomas Powers was born on 20 March 1778. He was living in the Ninety Six

District, which became Spartanburg County at the time of the 1810 census. His family consisted of one male age 26-45, one female age 26-45, and three males under 10. Thomas left South Carolina sometime after the year 1814 and by 1820 (census) was

living in Maury County, Tennessee. He apparently didn't remain in Maury County very long since in 1826 his oldest son, Jesse, was appointed constable of Lauderdale County, Alabama. Thomas and his family were listed in the 1830 census as living in Lauderdale County.

In 1831, Thomas bought 158 acres, of land in Lauderdale County described thusly: "NE I/4 of Section 4, Township 1, Range I I W." This tract of land lies between the forks of the Little Cypress Creek. Wayne County, Tennessee is directly north of this section.

Commissioners Court minutes of Lauderdale County for 4 February 1833, Page 91, show "An application of Thomas Powers, and for a sufficient cause appearing it is in order that he have leave to change the road so as to run a little west of where the same now runs."

1850 Lauderdale County Deed Records 13, Page 87. Thomas Powers lists/sells his land by trust deed to J. W. Young. Described as: "NE 1/4, of Section 4, Township 1, Range I I W. All that lies west of the East prong of Little Cypress except 8 acres belonging to James M. Golightly-." Thomas Powers and his wife, Margaret Powers, were listed as parties in this transaction.

On 7 February 1852, Thomas deeded to Presley Hardin: SE ¼ of Section 27, Township 2, Range 9W, about 159 acres of land.

On 30 December 1853, Thomas deeded to John William: NE 1/4, of NE 1/4 Section 15, Township 2, Range 9W, about 39 acres of land. These deeds account for the disposal of some of his property before his death.

The first wife of Thomas Powers was Jane ? born 25 January, 1780, died 7 April, 1844. The second wife of Thomas was Margaret Valiant, widow of James Valiant. Thomas married her 8 December 1846. Margaret died 19 July, 1853. They had no children.

Thomas died in Lauderdale County 4 January, 1854. No record of his burial place was found and he left no will.

Lauderdale County Probate Minutes, Book "A", Page 489, February Term 1854, shows the following: "Thomas Powers Estate-Came Wm. Powers and suggested the death of his father, late a citizen of said county-and moved the court for letters of administration upon his estate and tendered his bond as the statute requires' It is ordered by the court that this said bond be approved and recorded, and that letters accordingly issue to said Wm. Powers.

Inventory "B", Pages 147-148 ,19 Novembe,r 1&54, Lauderdale County, is a list of notes on 30 individuals payable to the estate of Thomas Powers. The amounts from each man varied from $1.95 to $800 and totaled approximately $3400. The last four names on this list were Wm. Powers, George -Linam (brother-in-law), L. E. Powers, and Jesse Powers. Each of the four owed less than $10., so their notes were probably for items bought at the sale of personal property of Thomas.

A Supplementary Inventory "B", Page 232, 6 December, 1854 included an additional note and cotton and buggy sold, totaling $314. Final settlement of the estate of Thomas

was made 8 December, 1856 and noted the amount the administrator, William Powers, 4had to divide among heirs was $3766. It is not recorded whether this amount included receipts from real estate or was from personal property only. Thomas Powers was a farmer. He and Jane were the parents of seven children

A. Jesse Powers, the oldest child of Thomas and Jane Powers, was born 22

December, 1804, in South Carolina. He left South Carolina with his family sometime after the year 1814 and by 1820 (census) was living in Maury County, Tennessee. On 25 December, 1826 Jesse was appointed constable in Lauderdale County, Alabama. The Lauderdale County census for 1830 lists him still in his father's household. Jesse married Oney S. Wingo ca. 1833. Oney was born 29 February, 1812, also in South Carolina. The only Wingos in South Carolina during this period were located in Spartanburg County, and the only head of household in Spartanburg County, as listed by the 1790 census, was Obadiah Wingo. By 1810 there were other Wingos as heads of households in South Carolina but still only in Spartanburg County. So it's evident that Oney S. Wingo was born in Spartanburg County and was a descendant of Obediah Wingo. The three oldest children of Jesse and Oney were born in Hardin County, Tennessee, so they apparently lived there for a few years after their marriage, before returning to Alabama ca. 1837. A financial panic gripped the whole country in 1837. This may have been the reason for their return to Alabama. Two of their children were born in Alabama in 1839 and 1841, respectively. Jesse and his family were living near his father in Lauderdale County at the time of the 1840 census. Jesse moved his family back to Hardin County, ca. 1844. A land grant made to him and dated 7 June, 1849 was signed by the Governor of Tennessee, as follows: "The State of Tennessee, No. 19905. To all to whom these presents shall come-Greetings: An entry made in the office of the Entry Taker of Hardin County pursuant to an act of the General Assembly of said State passed on the 2d day of November, 1847 and entered on the day of by No. 1833, there is granted by the state of Tennessee, unto Jesse Powers and Joshua Jones, a tract of land containing thirty seven acres and 134 poles by survey bearing date the 21st day of April, 1849 lying in said county on the waters of Turkey Creek in Range 13 and Section 3. Brown, Governor of the State of Tennessee, hath hereunto set ? the Great Seal of the State to be affixed at Nashville. On the 7th day of June, year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine, and of the Independence of the United States ?.

Signed, Neill S. Brown

Other indentures made by Jesse Powers in 1850 and 1851, all filed at the Hardin County courthouse, include the following:

1. Deed, August 6,1850, Book, "H", Page 457. "This indenture made this first day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty, between Jesse Powers and Joshua Jones of one part, and Thomas Kindel of the County and State aforesaid, of the, other part. The 1860 census lists Jesse Powers as a farmer with real estate valued at $2500. and personal, property at $1,600. He died on 5 September, 1886. His wife, Oney, died 26 June, 1896. Both were buried in a family cemetery near the old Powers home on Rogers Creek. This is approximately four miles south of Burnt Church Community in Hardin County. The old house is still standing and is presently owned and occupied by Archie Stricklin and his wife. There is one unmarked grave beside the Powers tombstone, and three others nearby said to contain Wingos. Jesse and Oney were the parents of nine children: 1 Eliza J. Powers, born ca. 1834. 2. Rhoda Caroline Powers, born ca. 1835. 3. William Thomas Powers, born 10 March 1837 4. Maratha Amanda Powers, born 7 February 1839. 5. James W. Powers, born ca. 1841. 6 Sarah A. 3. William Thomas (Billy) Powers, the third child of Jesse and Oney (Wingo) Powers, was born in Hardin County, Tennessee, 10 March, 1837. With the exception of his military service during the Civil War, he spent most of his life in McNairy and Hardin counties. William married Sarah Amanda Reeder 4 July, 1865 in Lauderdale County, Alabama. The wedding ceremony was performed by Reverend Wiley B. Edwards. Sarah, daughter of Jacob and Sarah Reeder, was born 20 April, 1838. The military service of Billy Powers began at Savannah, Tennessee on 7 January, 1862, as a 1st Lt. with Crews Battalion, Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States Army. He commanded one of the five companies of conscripts that was raised in Hardin County. The five companies were posted at Savannah where they remained until 7 February, 1862, when the approach of federal gunboats Tyler, Lexington and Conestoga caused them to leave hastily. From Savannah Crews Battalion went to Nashville, then to Corinth where they remained for a short time. Before the Battle of Shiloh (6-7 April 1862), many had deserted and either returned home or joined the Union Army. Several of the drafted men were home on furlough when the federal gunboats fired on Cerro Gordo. Some made no attempt to rejoin their units, instead enlisted with the federals; either on the gunboats or with Sherman's Army. So many of the men were soldiers from force rather than choice that almost complete disorganization followed the Battle of Shiloh, only 125 to 150 men remained of the battalion. This group, was now company size and redesignated Company "F", 9th (5th) Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Infantry, C.S.A. (Note: This regiment was erroneously designated "5th" but was officially changed to "9th" at a later date). The 9th Kentucky stayed in Corinth for a short time following the Battle of Shiloh then marched to Tupelo, thence by railroad to Vicksburg, thence to Baton Rouge and engaged in action there on 5 August,1862, and returned to Jackson. Lt. Powers commander of Company "F", was promoted to captain in August 1862. The 9th Kentucky left Jackson on 11 September and went by railroad to Holly Springs, thence to Knoxville, thence by railroad to Shell Mound. They left Shell Mound on 25 October, for Murfreesboro. On 29 November 1862, Captain Powers was transferred with his company to the 23rd Battalion, Tennessee Infantry (also known as Newman's Battalion). His company was designated Company "B" of the 23rd Battalion.

The order transferring Company "F", 9th Kentucky to the 23rd Tennessee Infantry Battalion stated that since the men were Tennesseans they were being transferred to this Tennessee battalion. The 23rd remained in camps at Shelbyville and Tullahoma until 22 April 1863. On 28 February, 1863 it was assigned to Major General J. C. Breckenridge's Division, Brigadier General John C. Brown's Brigade, which was composed of the 18th, 32nd, 45th Tennessee Infantry Regiments, and the 23rd Battalion. On 22 April, the 23rd moved to Fairfield, Tennessee where they remained until the retreat to Chattanooga began in July 1863. In July and August they were reported at Charleston and Loudon. The 23rd moved from Loudon in time to take part in the Battle of Chickamauga, which was their first engagement. At Chickamauga, which began on 19 September, 1863 and lasted through the next day, Brown's Brigade (with the 23rd Battalion) was in Major General Simon B. Buckner's Corps, Major General A. P. Stewart's Division. Captain Powers' 23rd Battalion (Major T. W. Newman, Commander) fought on the left wing under Lt. General James Longstreet. The losses for the two armies were about equal: 15,000 for General Bragg's Army of Tennessee and 15,000 for General Rosecrans. Captain Powers'23rd Battalion reported 51 casualties out of 145 effectives engaged. Muster rolls for August 1863 show that Captain Powers was sent to a hospital on 23 Augus,t 1863 (no reason given). Included with Captain Powers' records was a copy of a special requisition, for clothing for his company, signed by him at Chickamauga on 31 October, 1863. On 12 November 1863, the 23rd Battalion was consolidated into a field unit with the 45th Regiment under the command of Colonel Anderson Searcy, which lasted throughout the remainder of the war. Major Newman, who had been wounded at Chickamauga, was placed on detached service and Captain Simpson took command of the battalion. After his defeat at Chickamauga, General Rosecrans, Union Commander, withdrew north towards Chattanooga and was superseded in command by General Grant on 19 October, 1863. General Bragg and his Confederate, Army occupied Missionary Ridge with a weakened army too much extended, while General Grant in Chattanooga, received reinforcements and supplies. On 23 November, 1863 General Grant advanced and drove back the Confederate lines and occupied the entrenched ground. The next day Lookout Mt. was taken and on the 25th of November the whole Federal Army swept up to the top of the Ridge, driving the Confederates from the field. After the Battle of Missionary Ridge, General Joseph E. Johnson succeeded General Bragg as Army Commander. The latter relinquishing at his own request. The winter of 1863-64 was passed by Captain Powers and his unit in and around Dalton, Georgia receiving training and discipline. Late in February, to cooperate with a general movement of federal troops in the west, General Thomas attacked the Confederates at Dalton, but was repulsed. The records of Captain Powers include copies of four requisitions for clothing and supplies signed by him at Dalton and dated 31 December, 1863 (2), 29 February 1864, and 19 March 1864. Two of the requisitions bore the notation: "They, are very much needed." There was also a pay voucher signed by Captain Powers for the months of November and December 1863 ($260), and another for the month of January 1864 for $130.

The last report from any company of the 23rd Battalion was dated 31 August, 1864 at Atlanta and states: "The company left camp in Dalton, Georgia on 6 May 1864 and served with the command in marching, working, and fighting till this time. It was in the assault at Resaca May 14, and engaged May 15, also on June 22 near Marietta, Georgia, besides a great deal of skirmishing and picket fighting." The 23rd Battalion also fought at Rocky Face Ridge, the second Resaca, Powder Springs, Atlanta, Jonesboro, up to Columbia, the second Murfreesboro, and in 1865 they turned to the last battle at Bentonville, North Carolina. The muster roll for Captain Powers' company covering the period 1 May to 31

August, 1864, latest on file, shows him absent and on duty at Brigade Headquarters. He also appears on a report of Staff and Acting Staff Officers, belonging to and serving with Lee's Corps, (Lt General S.D.Lee).This report is dated l5 August, l864 and states he was detailed from the line by Col. J. B. Palmer, Brigade Commander. The amount of time spent at Brigade Headquarters or at Lee's Corps is not known.

William T. Powers was parolled as Captain and Assistant Adjutant General of Palmers Brigade, C.S.A., on 1 May 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina. He told a grandson, Sam Powers, that he suffered a hip wound during the Civil War. No records were found to confirm this but there's no reason for doubting the statement since his war records are incomplete through 31 August 1864 and non existing after that date.

After the war he returned to Hardin County, Tennessee where some of his activities are recorded at the courthouse:

"Monday, October 4,1869. This day came into court W. T. Powers and moved the court for leave to put gates on the roads leading to Purdy and Coffee Landing, from the ferry at Savannah on the west side of the river; which was granted on condition that he keep said gates in good repair so that they will move or swing easily on their hinges or fasteners, and that he put a signboard on one post of each of the gates indicating the place and distance to which the road leads."

"July 1, 1872. W. T. Powers appointed overseer of certain roads in Hardin County." "Monday, March 1, 1875. Ordered by court that J. C. Walker, J. W. Irwin, and W. T. Powers be appointed paid commissioners to lay off and set apart one years support for Mrs. McDougal, widow of Jno. McDougal, and they report the same to the next term of court." (Note: John McDougal died 7 February 1875). "April 5,1875. W. T. Powers and other commissioners appointed at a former

time by this court to lay off and set apart a years support for the widow of John McDougal, returned their report which was to be recorded."

Records remain of ten land transactions of W. T. Powers in Hardin County between August 1873 and February 1899. In all cases he was the grantee.

Soon after his marriage Captain Powers became a member of the mercantile firm of Powers and Johnson of Savannah. Upon severing relations with this firm he became a partner with A. J. Haynes, engaged in lumber manufacturing. They had a well-equipped saw and planning mill located at Cerro Gordo where for several years they did a thriving business.

In Hardin County, the Civil War decision of whether to remain with the Union or secede was generally in favor of remaining with the Union. The vote for "separation" or no separation" was 1052 to 498 for no separation. However, when the clash of arms came (Fort Sumter, S.C., April, 1861), the county was largely in sympathy with the South.

The state seceded on 8 June 1861, the militia was put into active training and all able bodied men enrolled. The first company of troops from Hardin County was raised at Shady Grove Church, near Saltillo, where a barbecue was held, war speeches were made and volunteers called for. A full company of cavalry was soon raised as the first body. The second body of men was recruited by L. B. Irwin. This second body consisted of fourteen men, who were taken to Nashville and became part of the First Tennessee (Confederate) Regiment. The regiment was organized in April 1861 with George Maney elected Colonel. The military records of James W. Powers begin with the First Tennessee (Confederate) Regiment on 17 June 1861, so he was undoubtedly one of the Shady Grove volunteers. He first enlisted for a period of twelve months, and his subsequent records show that he remained with this unit until his capture, so a history of the First Tennessee is a history of the military service of James W. Powers. Private Powers belonged to Captain George W. Campbell's Company, First Tennessee; also known as Company "G", Ist (Field's) Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. He joined this unit for duty 17 June 1861 at Camp Cheatham, Robertson County for a period of twelve months. On 10 July 1861 the First Tennessee was transferred from Camp Cheatham to what is now West Virginia and Virginia, here, with the Seventh and Fourteenth Regiments, it was brigaded under General Anderson. The trip to Mingo Flats was their first hardship, and near Cheat Pass the regiment was first under fire. It participated in the movement at Big Sewell Mountain and prepared winter quarters at Huntersville. But on 8 December 1861, they moved to Winchester, Virginia and in early January 1862, amid intense suffering and cold, moved to Romney, then back to Winchester early in February. After the fall of Fort Donelson, the First Tennessee Regiment was ordered to the command of General Albert Sidney Johnston. Part of the regiment was left in Knoxville, and part joined Johnston. The latter, the left wing, participated in the Battle of Shiloh on the second day (7 April 1862) but the right wing had been detained for lack of transportation. Following Shiloh, the two wings were reunited and late in April 1862 the First Tennessee (Confederate) Regiment was reorganized, H. R. Field becoming Colonel, vice Maney who was promoted. Hawkins Battalion was added to the regiment as "L" Company. The First Tennessee was under Maney's Brigade of Brigadier General B. F. Cheatham's Second Division. General P. G. T. Beauregard assumed command of the army after the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh. After it's withdrawal from Shiloh and during the month of May, 1862, the army quietly held its position in Corinth. Pvt. Powers' military records show that he reenlisted during this period (I May 1862) at Corinth, for two years or for the duration of the war. When a general attack appeared imminent at Corinth, the army silently evacuated for Tupelo and arrived there with their forces reduced from 112,092 men to 52,706. This was in part due to the unhealthy location, impure water, bad food and inaction. Late in June, General Braxton Bragg succeeded General Beauregard as commander.

A short time was spent in Tupelo resting, recruiting and refitting before General Bragg moved with his army to Chattanooga. He left Tupelo on I I July 1862 determined to take the offensive and invade Kentucky. By this strategy he expected to either force General Buell (Union) out of Tennessee or to arouse a large following in Kentucky. He also expected to collect large quantities of supplies. General Bragg left Chattanooga with his army on 28 August 1862 and marched north- ward via Pikeville and Sparta. At Munfordville, Kentucky with little loss Bragg Captured several thousand prisoners. He reached Bardstown on 23 September, 1862. As soon as General Buel saw the designs of Bragg he marched rapidly to protect Louisville and arrived there ahead of Bragg. Bragg finding he couldnt induce Kentucky to join the Confederacy although he had gone through the ceremony of installing Richard Hawes as Provisional Governor turned to retrace his steps. Meeting with no obstacles for some time to prevent his collecting supplies. On 6 October 1862 at Harrodsburg he formed a juncture with General Kirby Smith. Finally General Buell under pressure from the War Department in Washington and with an army twice as strong as Braggs moved out to attack. At Perryville, Kentucky on 8 October, 1862 the two armies collided. About 15,000 of Braggs army fought McCookss Division of nearly twice as many and routed them from the field capturing several thousand prisoners. The First Tennessee (Confederate) Regiment (Pvt. Powers unit) fought on the extreme right at Perryville, doing gallant service and losing over half of its men killed or wounded. It captured four, twelve pound guns and had fifty men killed. After the Battle of Perryville the First Tennessee retreated with Bragg and fought at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, from Dalton to Atlanta, at Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville. Pvt. Powers was wounded at Perryville on 8 October, 1862 and later captured by Union troops at Chaplain Hills. His name appears on a list of Confederate prisoners who had died in General hospitals in the Department of the Ohio, District of Central Kentucky. The report is dated 20 April, 1863 and states that Pvt. Powers was taken prisoner at Chaplin Hills, Kentucky and died in the General Hospital at Harrodsburg, Kentucky on 3 December, 1862. The nature of his wounds or specific cause of death is not listed. James W. Powers would have been twenty one years of age at the time of his death. No records of his burial place could be found, but it is probable that he was buried at Harrodsburg or at the Perryville National Cemetery, since it was customary to bury at the battle site. The national Cemetery is ten miles from Harrodsburg. 6. Sarah A. Nancy Powers, the sixth child of Jesse and Oney (Wingo) Powers was born 28 September, 1844. She married William J. Dan was a bookkeeper, merchant, farmer, and expeditor of construction materials. He had a restless, pioneering spirit that kept him on the move; a consideration that caused periods of hardship and privation for his family. His hopes and attempts at betterment carried him to the dust bowl of the Oklahoma Plains, to the wretched living conditions at a Missouri sawmill and lumber camp, to the isolation of a Mississippi Delta corporate plantation; to anti-bellum Natchez with its Old South romantic history and realistic mosquitoes, and to strawberry and tobacco farming in western Kentucky. His final move was from McNairy County, in West Tennessee to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1945 where he had been employed since 1944. Dan continued. to work in Oak Ridge until his retirement and was living there at the time of his death on 21 January, 1967. He was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Hardin County. Dan married Capitola Mariah McDougal (see McDougal family) on 21 December, 1914. Capitola, born 18 April, 1896, has a noble, independent spirit that endears her to her family: and also insures the respect of those with whom she is less known. She has the patience, adaptability, stoicism and frugality for which her Scottish ancestors were noted. Capitola learned early in her married life to do her best for her family with what was available, and not unduly concern herself with the lack of material comforts, and the day to day events over which she had no control. Her long and healthy life and the productive lives of her children demonstrate the success of her attitude and efforts., After the death of her husband, Capitola remained in Oak Ridge where she lives alone. Dan and Capitola had seven children:
