Ste. Genevieve High School Career Planning Guide

Revised April 2006

2

Dear Student and Parents, The Career Planning Guide has been developed in conjunction with the A+ Schools Program. This guide will help students, with the assistance of parents, make informed decisions about their high school course of study. The selection of high school courses should center around "career paths" which are clusters of occupations grouped together because they are similar in nature. The classes students choose work together to prepare them for their future. Model schedules are included in this booklet for the six career paths. Students should explore the requirements of their career choice as they make decisions about high school courses. Students must also consider the entrance requirements of the post-secondary institution they may attend when making course selections. Entrance requirements vary widely. Information is available in the guidance department on this topic. We look forward to working with you. If we can be of assistance, please contact us in the A+ office or high school guidance department. Parents may call 883-4500 with any questions or concerns. Sincerely, A+ Schools Program Ste. Genevieve High School Guidance Department

COURSES OF STUDY COLLEGE PREPARATORY This course of study is designed to provide college-bound students with the academic background necessary for admission and successful achievement at institutions of higher learning. If a student has not made a decision about attending college, it is generally advised for them to follow the college preparatory course of study so they can meet college admission requirements. Students will select from one of the six career paths in order to achieve their post-secondary goals. TECHNICAL PREPARATION The Tech-Prep course of study is designed to prepare students with the academic background necessary to enter the work force, begin an apprenticeship program, enroll in a training/technical school or junior college. Students will select from one of the six career paths in order to achieve their post-secondary goals. The 2 + 2 articulated occupational programs are the heart of the Tech Prep program. Students are able to earn college credit through Mineral Area College and actually begin an associate degree level occupational program while still in high school. Students are dually enrolled in the high school and Mineral Area College. College credit is earned and grades are transcripted as the student proceeds through the program. There are no student fees or tuition for the credit earned as a high school student. 2 + 2 Programs at the Perryville Area Career Center which have articulation agreements include: Auto Collision Repair I & II 36 hours of Tech Prep college credit Building Trades I & II 36 hours of Tech Prep college credit Business Management/Business 13 hours of Tech Prep college credit Marketing/Ownership Computer Maintenance I & II 21 hours of Tech Prep college credit Graphic Communication/ 36 hours of Tech Prep college credit Printing I & II Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning- 36 hours of Tech Prep college credit Refrigeration I & II Welding I & II 36 hours of Tech Prep college credit 2 + 2 Programs offered at Ste. CAREER PREPARATION

The demands by employers in the world of work are changing. Eighty percent of all new jobs will require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year degree. Graduates, unlike their parents, will change jobs six to seven times in their lifetime. Although four-year college graduates will continue to be needed in the future, greater knowledge of career options other than those requiring a university degree will be essential for students entering the job market in the future. We, at Ste. Genevieve High School, believe it is our responsibility to provide students with the information necessary to make career decisions for the changing job market. Career Paths will provide students with the information needed to focus on a career goal as they proceed through high school. Whether a student chooses to enter the work force, begin an apprenticeship program, attend a training/technical school, or enroll in a university, Career Paths will provide a framework to assist in the selection of a post-secondary goal. WHAT ARE CAREER PATHS? Career paths are clusters of occupations/careers that are grouped because many of the people in them share similar interests and strengths. All six paths include a variety of occupations requiring different levels of education and training. Selecting a career path provides students with an area of focus, along with flexibility and a variety of ideas to pursue. Deciding on a career path can help students prepare for their future. The intent is not to decide on a specific occupation for the rest of your life, but to select a career path into which you can begin directing your energies. Identifying a career path can help you in selecting school courses. A career path is not a permanent commitment. As you have new experiences, you will learn things about yourself and may change career paths. If you decide on a new career path, discuss it with your parents and counselor, then adjust future course selections in accordance with the new career direction. STEPS TO CHOOSING A CAREER PATH 1. Get To Know Yourself: Identify your interests, abilities, and talents. Take the Career

Survey on page 7-8. 2. Begin to Look At Careers: Consider careers in each path in relation to your strengths. Find out more about those that interest you the most. 3. Explore, Both In School And Out: Have you ever kept a journal or a diary? Try it with

career paths exploration on page 9-10. Journaling will help you organize your experiences and thoughts about them.

4. Put It All Together: Based on your exploration, pick a path or paths that you want to learn more about. Don’t worry- - it’s not a permanent choice, it’s just a starting point! 5. GET STARTED- - Explore Some More: Which classes do you want to take next year? What do you like to do in your leisure time? Are you a volunteer? Are you involved in extra-curricular activities? Information about Job Shadowing is on page 11.

BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, AND TECHNOLOGY (ENTERPRISING-CONVENTIONAL) Occupations in this path are related to the business environment. These may include entrepreneurship, sales, marketing, computer/information systems, finance, accounting, personnel, economics, and management. HEALTH SERVICES (INVESTIGATIVE-SOCIAL) Occupations in this path are related to the promotion of health and the treatment of disease. NATURAL RESOURCES (REALISTIC-INVESTIGATIVE) Occupations in this path are related to the environment and natural resources. These may include agriculture, earth sciences, environmental sciences, fisheries, forestry, horticulture, and wildlife. HOW CAN PARENTS AND OTHER INTERESTED ADULTS HELP? Career paths give parents a focus for discussing career opportunities with their student. Concentrating on selecting a career path can enable your student to make an initial career decision, whereas, the idea of selecting a career for the rest of his or her life can be overwhelming. Parents can assist students in identifying interests, abilities, and talents by having them complete the career survey on the next page and then discussing the results with your student. Encourage participation in career exploration activities such as job shadowing and journaling. Additional information on these activities can be found on pages 9-11.

JOB SHADOWING

WHAT IS JOB SHADOWING? Job Shadowing is an opportunity for all Ste. Genevieve High School students to shadow a work-place mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job. An opportunity is available for all students in grades 9-12 to shadow one day per school year or two half days. Students will be considered in attendance on the day they are participating in shadowing and will assume the responsibility of completing all class work missed while job shadowing. The A+ Office and the Counselor’s Office will maintain a list of local businesses and organizations that have expressed an interest in participating in the activity. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN JOB SHADOWING? The job shadowing activity must be done in an area related to the student’s chosen career

pathway with approval by their grade level guidance counselor. Students interested in participating in job shadowing should consult the list of local

businesses and organizations that have expressed an interest in participating in shadowing. The A+ office and the counselor’s office will have the list.

Contact the designated person at the site where shadowing will be done. Obtain their

permission for this activity, including agreement on the date and time. Obtain a Job Shadowing Request Form from the guidance office any time during first or

second semester. No shadowing will be approved for the dates of final examinations or during state achievement testing. Secure all necessary signatures and submit the request form to the guidance office at least one week prior to the scheduled shadowing.

Pre-arrange with classroom teachers for the day(s) the student will be absent by presenting

them with the approved Job Shadowing Request Form. Be responsible for all missed schoolwork.

Arrange for transportation to and from the job site.

Submit an acknowledgement of job shadowing from the site supervisor to the guidance office

on the next day after shadowing.
