The digital revolution is taking centre stage, and in a big way. Everywhere we turn, we hear stories about how robots, artificial intelligence, big data and Industry 4.0 are transforming the way we work and the way we live. Not only is this happening, but it is happening at a rapid pace. While other industries such as aviation, automotive and manufacturing have been using automation technologies such as robotics for decades, the new wave of artificial intelligence is changing how companies approach productivity and look into ways to improve quality while enhancing decision making. And with connectivity being at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution, everything and everyone is connected. With this comes the challenge of how data is being managed and utilised by companies, where accessibility to information is more transparent than ever before. What then, does this mean for the oil and gas industry, only just emerging from arguably its three most challenging years in history? While many maintain the need to remain practical and continue with business as usual to recover from the downturn, it is important for the industry to also realise the need to reinvent and transform for long term sustainability. Even though we are still at the beginning of this journey with many challenges, opportunities are out there to be discovered. Harnessing the full potential of the digital revolution is the key to creating an oil and gas industry fit to weather the challenges of the 21st century. The executive plenary session will feature senior executives sharing their thoughts on the theme of whether the industry is ready for digital to be a drastic revolutionary event, or will it rather embrace digital in a more evolutionary fashion?

With many options of digital strategies available in the current market, the key question is, how does an organisation decide? What are the scenarios for organisations going through a digital transition (i.e. how organisations incorporate industry 4.0)? This panel session will discuss and debate past practices and key decision making factors on preparing an organisation to move into the digital era.
• Definition of Digitalisation: Digitisation vs. Digitalisation vs. Transformation• What gets the most value for the business: off-the-shelf solutions vs. open source• Readiness of organisation• Digitalisation impetus - Industrial Revolution 4.0 (How it instigated the digitalisation boom?) - Digital Enablers (IOTs, Cloud Computing, EDGE Computing)• Examples of digital transformation strategies

While technology is an important element of digital transformation ecosystems, we also recognise that going digital is so much more than just a technology conversation. It’s also about organisational agility, digital mindset where cultural transformation plays a pivotal role in driving the success of digital transformation.
This panel session will discuss and debate on which comes first in digital transformation; is culture a key determinant of successful digital transformation or is it technology/application? How is fostering digital culture defined in value, characteristics and behavior? What role does culture and technology play in an organisation’s digital transformation journey?

Digitalisation involves the introduction of digital technology, such as computer engineering methods and tools, to replace, streamline or automate manual and physical tasks. In the petroleum industry, this will involve the increased use of integrated operations, remote operations, automation, robot technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and access to computer resources in order to analyse large volumes of data. This development is capable of producing more efficient work processes, replacing manual labour, yielding better analysis and improved decision-making. This may provide clear benefits for health, safety and the environment (HSE) and increased efficiency. The development may also bring challenges, notably concerning situational awareness, information security, human error and sabotage. This panel session will discuss the need for the industry to actively monitor changes related to risk resulting from digitalisation.
