What is Parent Choice?NEW!!The Gateway Academy school philosophy focuses on parent choice, by which parents and students are given the opportunity to choose curriculum under the advisement of the Consulting Teacher(credentialed teacher) who offers curriculum that reflects the student’s learning style(s), is appropriate to the student’s developmental level, and allows the student to progress at his/her own pace.

Gateway Academy allows parents to facilitate and guide their student’s education program. To that end, parents have the opportunity to:

∙ choose appropriate curricula based upon the student's educational needs and objectives and in keeping with school policies and collaborations with Gateway Academy professional educators according to Ed Code and our Charter. ∙ opt for instructional approaches that take the student’s learning styles and educational strengths and deficits into account ∙ create a flexible schedule considering State requirements and school policy ∙ determine areas of focus that reflect their student’s interests, and request vendor services and materials related to those areas of interest ∙ indicate how the instructional budget is used within the school guidelines ∙ select their child’s Response to Instruction (RTI) option from the school’s RTI option list ∙ enroll their student concurrently, part-time only, in an approved (community college, ROP, online provider) program ∙ work with their CT and the Guidance Department regarding high school planning that may include a-g, general, and/or Career Technical Education (CTE) coursework and after graduation college and career readiness planning.

By choosing Gateway Academy and deciding to be part of their student’s learning process, per our charter and school policies, all parents understand that students will:

● learn and demonstrate adequate progress ● participate in options chosen from our school approved programs if the student has been determined to have foundational skills deficiencies ● meet state and school mandated requirements for testing ● attend scheduled classes, meetings, and tutoring sessions ● attend Special Education designated services using the provider assigned by Gateway Academy if they are eligible.

ASSESSMENTSStudent assessment is a vital part of the educational process. Teachers and specialists use a variety of methods to regularly assess student progress on an ongoing basis. The following testing procedures are used district-wide:

● CAASPP: The Smarter Balanced Assessment System is a computer adaptive, Common Core-aligned assessment completed on the computer for all 3rd-11th grade students, which focuses on English language arts/literacy and mathematics. Smarter Balanced assessments are designed to measure student progress toward college and career readiness.

● All families, with children grades 3rd-8th & 11th, choosing to opt out of state testing must submit a California Common Core Data Opt-Out form to the Gateway office by April 13, 2018. All students who choose to opt out of testing will be required to take a district administered alternative assessment which will assess student progress toward grade level standards in the areas of language arts and math. This assessment will be administered at no cost to Gateway Academy families.

● Aimsweb: Each trimester, all TK-8 Gateway students will take reading and math fluency tests given by the Escalon Unified School District.

● Two assessment weeks will occur at Gateway Academy at the end of the first and second trimesters. Students will complete sight word assessments, levelled reading passaged, math skills, and math concepts and applications.

● All 5th grade students will be required to take Physical Fitness Testing (PFT). The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity. The test is composed of aerobic exercises, abdominal strength and endurance activities, and upper body strength training.

● Students in kindergarten through grade twelve whose home language is not English are required by law to be assessed in English Language Proficiency, or ELP. In California, the ELP assessment is called the the CELDT.

● The CELDT allows schools to identify students who need to improve their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.

Schools also give the test each year to students who are still learning English.

● NEW!! Gateway Academy has an effective Response to Instruction (RTI) Program. RTI is grounded in the belief that ALL students can learn and achieve high standards when provided with effective teaching, scientific research-based instruction, and access to a standards-based curriculum. RTI is an integrated approach that includes general, remedial, gifted, and special education by providing high-quality instruction that is matched to individual student needs. By providing scientifically-based instruction to students, monitoring progress on instruction, and using this information to determine who is in need of more intensive instruction, RTI builds on the requirements of The Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Students who are behind on grade level foundational skills in reading and math, and who are not making adequate progress in these foundational skills, are required to actively participate in a research based intensive support program. These skills are imperative to a student’s academic success. Parents, in collaboration with their Consulting Teacher, may choose which intensive support program best meets their student’s learning style from our school approved programs.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION● Transportation notes need to be on file at Gateway Academy for any

person other than parents driving your child to and from school.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS AT EL PORTAL MIDDLE SCHOOLGateway Academy students in grades 6-8 may participate in sports at El Portal Middle School. Students in the Gateway Academy home school are held to the same academic and social expectations as EPMS students. The athletic program at El Portal is designed to give students opportunities to experience participation at the entry level of competitive sports, to prepare students for participation in high school athletics, and to provide an avenue for development of team play and sportsmanship. It is meant to be a positive experience for students, but all are reminded that in participating in any competition, there come times of winning and times of losing. Please also note that since this is not a recreational sports program, play time is not guaranteed. It is our goal to help our young adolescents learn to accept both winning and losing with dignity. In an effort to promote these experiences and this goal, we have developed rules and expectations for behaviors at all practices and games—on and off the court. Students will be required to have record of a sports physical on file with EPMS prior to the first day of practice. Also, a signed Code of Conduct contract will be required to be on file at EPMS prior to the first day of practice. Both of these forms may be found in the forms section of this handbook as well as in the forms section of our website: www.escaloncharteracademy.org.

ON-CAMPUS DRESS CODEThe purpose of a dress code is to establish a school environment that supports a productive, academic atmosphere which fully supports students’ learning and reflects the educational values of the staff and the parents. The following items of clothing/accessories are considered inappropriate and/or disruptive to the educational process and are unacceptable for school attire:

● Strapless, tank tops or tube tops worn without a blouse/sweater cover-up

always a good choice and allow students to fully participate in outdoor/physical education activities.

INTERNETThe following services will be available to each student and hosted by Google as part of Escalon Unified School District’s online presence in Google Apps for Education: Mail, Calendar, Drive, Sites, Video and other Teacher-Selected Apps. A permission form MUST be signed in order for your child to receive access to any computer activities. Student accounts can be removed by parent request at any time.Cell phones need to be silent and out of sight when students are in classes.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURESThese procedures are in place to ensure the safety of the students during various emergency situations: earthquake, evacuation, bomb threats, or intruder on campus.

● During an emergency, students will be dismissed by the Superintendent to go home only if there is time to return students safely to their homes, and parents can be notified. If a student's parents cannot be contacted and/or the parent is unable to pick up their child, the school will maintain responsibility for the student until a parent or authorized individual can pick up the student. At no time will a student be excused except to the care of a parent or other adult designated on the emergency card. If evacuation of the school is necessary, students will be transported to a predetermined location.

● Parents will be advised of the evacuation site by radio announcements and/or information posted at the school site. Evacuation of the school will not be attempted unless there is no alternative.

● In the event of an emergency, school personnel need to be involved in caring for the students, and telephone lines need to be kept open for communications with government authorities.

● Students will participate in various mock emergency drills such as fire, duck-and-cover, lock-down and classroom evacuations. These are conducted periodically throughout the year to ensure students and staff are familiar with emergency procedures and can respond safely in an emergency situation.
