Introduction

TheOfficeoftheStateSuperintendentofEducation(OSSE)ispleasedtoprovidenewPhysicalEducationstandardsthatreflectthechanginglandscapeandneedsoftheDistrictofColumbia.Thesestandardsprovideaclear,skills-based,andage-appropriateapproachtodevelopingphysicallyliterateindividualswhohavetheknowledge,skills,andconfidencetoenjoyalifetimeofphysicalactivity.TheDistrictofColumbia’sPhysicalEducationStandardswerelastapprovedbytheStateBoardofEducationinDecember2007.Overthepastseveralmonths,OSSEhaspartneredwiththeStateBoardofEducationtorevisethestandards,activelyengagingwithSHAPEAmerica,Districtagencies,physicaleducators,andotherlocalstakeholdersintheprocessofensuringthatthesestandardsreflectbest-practicesandalignwithSHAPEAmerica’sNationalPhysicalEducationstandards.Numerousexpertshavegenerouslygiventheirtimeandexpertiseindevelopingthesestandards.

ThesestandardsreflectSHAPEAmerica’sNationalPhysicalEducationStandards,whichareconsideredabest-practiceforstandardsandoutcomesinthissubjectarea.TheyhavealsobeencarefullyreviewedandmodifiedtofitDC’scontext.Reflectingastrongconsensusamongeducators,thesestandardsestablishhighexpectationsforallofourstudents.Theydetailtheknowledgeandskillsstudentsneedtobelifelongphysicallyliterateindividuals.

Asyouwillseeinthisdocument,thenewstandardsarearrangedbygradelevel.Additionally,pre-KindergartenphysicaleducationstandardsareaddressedthroughtheDistrictofColumbiaEarlyLearningStandardsforouryoungestlearners.Pleaseseetheglossaryandacronymslistattachedforadditionalinformation.Onceagain,OSSEisthrilledtoofferthesestandardsasabuildingblockinpromotingthehealthofallDistrictstudents.Welookforwardtoworkingwithourthoughtpartnersininsuringsuccessfullyimplementation.
