New Install of PCSchool on a Workstation This procedure is to be followed for all workstation installations and will avoid potential security issues caused by updated Windows security. This document can also be used if a school is having Windows related security issues with current installs of the PCSchool client.

STEP 1 – Locate server path

Find the PCSchool folder on the server. If you are not sure of the location open PCSchool on a workstation (not the server), go to Help> About> System Info and copy the path from the “Filelist” path starting with the “\\” up until the “\Data\Filelist.cfg”. Always use the UNC path when installing PCSchool. Please ask your IT staff for this path if you are unsure. In the example below, the path will be: \\Adrian-aspire\pcssql\PCSchool .

STEP 2 – Install SQL Client

Open Windows Explorer, click into the address bar and paste in the path you copied above. Press the [Enter] key on your keyboard to open the PCSchool folder.

Copy the UNC path form the address bar as you will need this later. Find the following files;

sqlncli.msi – for 32 bit Windows install

sqlncli_x64.msi – for 64 bit Windows install

PCRemote2009.exe, this will be run after appropriate SQL Client is installed.

You need to install the appropriate SQL Client, either the 32 bit or the 64 bit. If you are uncertain of the version of Windows you are running it can be found in “Computer”

Click on your Windows start button

Right click on Computer, this may not be the same place as shown

Right click on Properties

You will then be able to read the information appertaining to this computer and run the appropriate SQL Client file.

STEP 3 – Install PCSchool Client

Once the SQL Client is installed, find PCRemote2009.exe, right click and select “Run as Administrator”

This will instigate the Client Installation;

Click ‘Install Client’ if the button is highlighted and follow the prompts

At the next window click Browse and paste in the UNC path you copied earlier.

The Visual DataFlex path will be correct in most cases however if your server or share name has the word “PCSchool” in it, it will incorrectly form. The path needs to be the original UNC path but minus \PCSchool, and replaced with \Visual DataFlex 11at the end

At the next window click the [Browse] button and enter in C:\PCSLaunch as below. DO NOT use the default path or save it within the “Program Files” or “Program Files (x86)” folders. If this folder is not available it will be created when you click [Next]

If you receive this prompt then click [Yes] to continue.

Go through the rest of the Install process, clicking [Next] where necessary, once this has been completed you will receive a Finish window;

Click [Finish]

Close any windows opened by the installer.

STEP 4 – Fix the shortcut icon

If the Desktop Icon is incorrect right click and browse for the correct icon;

The Icon can be found in your local drive, this is normally C:\PCSLaunch\Programs\Admin.exe

STEP 5 – Install local licenses

To finish the install the Visual DataFlex Licences must be copied to the Workstation;

Check you have the latest SQL files

These can be downloaded from www.pcschool.net/download/sql_drv_dll.zip

If a folder is not already created then create a folder on the server under PCSchool called Licences and extract the files into this

Find Visual DataFlex 11/ Bin on the server and copy all DFR and CFG files, you may have more than one, and the Termlist file into this folder

Files from this folder must be copied to the Local Drive\Program Files (86)\Visual DataFlex 11\Bin folder This will complete the SQL Installation

Terminal Server Install

This section is for IT staff only. When installing on a Terminal Server, prior to running the PCRemote, right click on the “Command Prompt” and select “Run As Administrator”. Within the command prompt, type the following

Change user /install <enter>

After installing PCSchool, return to the Command Prompt and type

Change user /execute <enter> (You can then close the command prompt window)

DEP Issue on servers

If Curric.exe closes immediately when logging in (usually this only happens on a server) the most likely cause is that Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is enabled on this computer. You can either disable this altogether (requires reboot), or add PCSchool’s .exe programs to the exception list;

Adding the .exe programs individually prevents a reboot

Adding the “Programs” folder requires a reboot Right click on the “Computer” icon then go to “Advanced Settings”, then press the “Settings…” button.

The DEP issue is now affecting some Windows 10 clients, the solution is the same as above.
