President's Report

This is my last message as President of the Southeast Federation of Gem and Mineral Societies and it has been an honor and privilege to serve the Federation.  I recently visited the Columbia Gem & Mineral Society’s annualshow.  I talked with Sue Shrader who is a member of the Columbia and Aiken, South Carolina clubs.  I was excited to hear about their community outreach programs.  They frequently visit groups and talk about rock types and other earth science topics.  I also visited the MidTennessee Gem &

Mineral Society Show.  I have always been inspired by the educational exhibits at their show.  They invite the local boy scout groups to their show to obtain earth science merit badges.  The club sets up stations for each merit badge.  The scouts fulfill the requirements at each station to earn theirbadges.  Marty Hart  added a new addition to his outreach exhibits this year.He created a station to illustrate Mohs hardness.  He glued pieces of talc, calcite, fluorite, window glass and quartz to a board.  He also attached a piece of copper, a steel nail and a quartz crystal to a scribe so the kids could find out the different Mohs hardness of various materials.  I ask all the SFMS clubs to keep up the good work inspiring future generations love of rocks, minerals and fossils. If your club has great exhibit ideas or outreach programs please share them in the Lodestar.

Thank you,

Teresa Polly

Committee Reports

2018 WEBMASTER’S CONTEST REMINDER

With the AFMS contest occurring in early April this year, the deadline for submitting your club's webiste for the 2018 SFMS contest is JANUARY 5. I realize this is tight, but it is the best that we can do to meet the AFMS submittal deadlines. To enter, go to the SFMS web site link for the webmaster’s contest (http://www.amfed.org/sfms/webmastercontest.html). There are 3 fillable PDFs for you do download. The guidelines file is important to read over, as it explains what the judges will be looking for

Page 4: Table of Contents - jaxgemandmineral.orgjaxgemandmineral.org/assets/lodestar-december-2017.pdf · Table of Contents President's Report ... Middle Tennessee Rockhound of the Year

when they look at your site.

Please be sure to fill out your information on BOTH the entry form and the score sheet. When you have them filled out, they can be emailed to me at [email protected]. I MUST have them no later than January 5, 2018.

I encourage each and every webmaster to enter this year. It is a great way to

learn and make your website even better. We can always learn new ways of how to improve how we communicate information to our clubs. That makes the webmaster, along with the Bulletin editor, the focal points for club communication.

Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions.I look forward to your entries.

Middle Tennessee Rockhound of the Year

The Middle Tennessee Rockhounds wishes to recognize one of its key members for his contributions and efforts. He has always been available to present a program, identify a fossil or specimen or even give up the locations of his collecting spots. He is known to bring back mineral samples from his travels and share with the club. He is very unselfish with his knowledge of geology.

He was instrumental in finding our present location for our annual rock swap and help organizing the event as well as happily doing the behind the scene grunt work without complaint.

The most memorable contribution with our club is the annual Arkansas field trip. He planned everything from the hotel, eats and collecting sites. Through his efforts many club members have specimens from Mt. Ida, Hot Springs, Jesseville and Magnet Cove added to their collections. Along with the Quartz, Wavellite and other goodies found along the way his trips always brought the club

fellowship and fond memories. For that reason we are proud to announce William Peel as our 2017 Rockhound of the Year.

Knoxville Gem and Mineral Society Rockhound of the Year

We at the Knoxville Gem and Mineral Society wish to honor Travis Paris as Rockhound of the year. Travis has spent the last two years serving as the KGMS President. Over the years Travis has been instrumental in orchestrating our annual gem and mineral show. Travis has made it his mission this year to arrange a clubhouse for KGMS. He negotiated a location with USA Aggregates and organized the necessary repairs and maintenance to get the clubhouse ready for meetings. Travis has been a driving force for the Knoxville club and we would like to show our appreciation for his many years of hard work.
