< MCASD ANNUAL REPORT >

I am grateful to the many generous donors, each of our Members, and our visitors, whose support has made the success of Fiscal Year 2015 possible. It is only with their generous financial support, and hearty endorsement of our work, that I am able to share the accomplishments outlined in this report with you. Led by Chief Curator Kathryn Kanjo, MCASD proudly presented Jack Whitten: Five Decades of Painting, the largest overview of Whitten’s work to date. This acclaimed, original exhibition and accompanying publication presented a full, more cogent picture of this influential artist. Following its successful run at MCASD, Jack Whitten: Five Decades of Painting continued on a national tour to the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Walker Art Center. Associate Curator Jill Dawsey organized Laugh In: Art, Comedy, Performance, a compelling exhibition exploring the recent turn towards comedic performance in contemporary art. The exhibition featured 20 artists who engage the strategies and themes of stand-up comedy as a means to rethink questions of artistic performativity, audience participation, and public speech. We were also delighted to give West Coast audiences an opportunity to see the largest definitive mid-career survey of the work of celebrated American artist Nicole Eisenman. Organized by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and curator Kelly Shindler, Dear Nemesis, Nicole Eisenman 1993-2013 included more than 120 works, charting the development of Eisenman’s practice across painting, printmaking, and drawing from the 1990s to present. MCASD furthered our commitment to emerging artists with the presentation of the first solo museum exhibitions for Colter

Jacobsen and Sarah Cain. In This is How We Walk On the Moon: Colter Jacobsen, the San Francisco-based, San Diego-born artist presented new work inspired by his recent travels by foot and train along the coast of California, together with a selective survey of related works. SARAH CAIN blue in your body, red when it hits the air, expanded the notion of the traditional solo exhibition by presenting Cain’s works on canvas next to works by other artists. Fiscal Year 2015 brought an important opportunity to expand our service to San Diego’s military population. With seed funding from the California Arts Council, MCASD worked in partnership with Combat Arts San Diego to create ArtOASIS—a comprehensive art-based pilot program which supports the recovery of active duty military personnel overcoming Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and combat related stress. The program served 77 active-duty combat troops enrolled in a residential treatment program for PTSD at the Naval Base in Point Loma. Programming included weekly art-making classes on base, half-day excursions to the Museum galleries, and a culminating Showcase at the Museum. ArtOASIS was a transformative partnership, both for the Museum and the local and military community. Over 3,000 individuals viewed the ArtOASIS Showcase, sparking new awareness of the role of the arts in serving our military service members recovering from the trauma of combat. For schools, the Museum continued to be an important resource for learning and reflection. Our gifted team of Gallery Educators create space for students of all ages to explore often difficult and abstract ideas within contemporary art. We continued to diversify and expand our outreach to schools through the

Extended School Partnership (ESP) program, which served 50 educators and 1,276 students at middle and high schools. Students enjoyed multiple field trips to the Museum where they participated in hands-on art-making and instruction, culminating in a showcase of their work. The ESP program works to infuse the arts into existing curriculum by collaborating with educators in fields as diverse as Language Arts, Social Science, Math, Biology, Spanish, Engineering, and History. Looking to the future, MCASD has launched an expansion campaign in honor of the Museum’s 75th Anniversary. The capital campaign will dramatically expand the La Jolla facility, adding 30,000 sq. feet of new gallery space, allowing MCASD to truly function as a museum of modern and contemporary art. We look forward to harnessing the tremendous success of Fiscal Year 2015 as we move into the next era with you, our valued supporters.

For everything you do, we thank you.

the creative process. The Education Department supports the

institutional mission by offering resources that lead to further

exploration and experimentation, knowledge building, and

engagement for all visitors.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

MCASD’s public programs offer audiences the opportunity to

engage with artwork and exhibitions beyond the gallery. During

Fiscal Year 2015, the Museum presented 55 public programs.

From a series of “Blind Dates” featuring artists, performers,

and cultural thinkers activating Rita McBride’s sculpture Arena,

to Loading Dock Lunches that invited Core Columbia residents

and professionals to take their lunch break in the Museum’s

loading dock.

Here’s a look at the important public programs that served

approximately 8,000 members of our community in Fiscal Year

2015.

SESSIONS IN CONTEMPORARY ART

Sessions in Contemporary Art is designed to expand your

knowledge of today’s art world. In Fiscal Year 2015, Chief Curator

Kathryn Kanjo, Associate Curator Jill Dawsey, Assistant Curator

Elizabeth Rooklidge, and The David C. Copley Director and CEO

Hugh Davies led this four-part, seminar-style course focused on

conceptual and video art, painting, and installation.

PERSPECTIVES

The Perspectives series invites the public to take a seat at the

table with artists, curators, and specialists in various fields

of knowledge for enriched discussions about works of art or

exhibitions on view.

An Artist’s Perspective offers a deeper understanding of

works on view by hearing directly from the artists themselves,

using their work as a launch pad to explore broad topics in

contemporary art.

Led by an MCASD curator, A Curator’s Perspective provides

an opportunity for visitors to ask questions and learn about

exhibitions, artists’ processes, or particular works of art. This

program takes place soon after an exhibition opens and offers

first-hand knowledge about the installation and curatorial

process directly from the curator.

There are multiple entry points into the world of contemporary

art, and An Outside Perspective invites visitors to explore issues

emerging from exhibitions by hearing from a specialist in another

field of knowledge: music, film, architecture, or science.

In Fiscal Year 2015, MCASD’s Perspectives program served

198 visitors.

AXLINE LECTURE

Since 2000, MCASD and The San Diego Museum of Art have

partnered to present the annual Axline Lecture in honor of

Jackie and Rea Axline, long-time trustees and supporters of

both museums who bequeathed generous endowments to both

institutions in 1999. Hosted in alternate years by each museum,

this annual event offers an opportunity to thank current museum

Members and donors for their support throughout the year.

In Fiscal Year 2015, the Axline Lecture featured internationally

renowned artist El Anatsui. El Anatsui is best known for

transforming simple materials into complex assemblages that

create distinctive visual impact. Gravity and Grace: Monumental

Works by El Anatsui featured the artist’s work at MCASD’s

downtown location from March 6 to June 28, 2015.

FILM PROGRAMS

Film continues to be a relevant part of MCASD’s programming. In

Fiscal Year 2015, MCASD collaborated with ArcLight Cinemas in

La Jolla to present Fold Crumple Crush: The Art of El Anatsui in

conjunction with the exhibition Gravity and Grace: Monumental

Works by El Anatsui, presented in the downtown galleries. The

53-minute documentary, filmed over three years in Venice,

Nsukka, and the United States, is a powerful portrait of Africa’s

most widely acclaimed contemporary artist.

THURSDAY NIGHT THING (TNT)

TNT (Thursday Night Thing) features live music, artist talks,

art-making activities, and interactive performances themed

around and inspired by current exhibitions. During Fiscal Year

2015, MCASD offered three TNT events that welcomed more

than 1,829 visitors.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS

School programs at MCASD served students and educators in

public, charter, and independent schools, as well as professors

teaching at higher education institutions and out-of-school

time programs. These audiences were served through a robust

offering of tour experiences, the Extended School Partnership

(ESP) program, and Educator programs.

TOUR EXPERIENCES

MCASD continued to play a critical role in the cultural

development of our community during Fiscal Year 2015, focusing

on tour experiences designed to serve the public, 6 to 12th grade

school groups, higher education students, community groups,

and adult groups. These experiences served a diverse population

that included audiences as far south as San Ysidro, and as far

east as Poway.

Types of tours offered in Fiscal Year 2015:

• LOOK/ EXPLORE TOURS are hour-long, student-centered

dialogues in which students gain a greater understanding

of the works on view through visual inquiry and in-gallery

activities.

• ArtLAB WORKSHOPS build on the Look/Explore Tour with an

additional hour of hands-on art making experience in which

students further explore process and materials.

• SELF-GUIDED TOURS give higher education professors and

instructors the ability to reserve space for their class to visit

the Museum as a group at a particular time.

• FOCUS TOURS are one-hour, dialogue-based tours for adult

and higher education groups focused on one of the Museum’s

special exhibitions.

MCASD continued to demonstrate a commitment to equitable

access through free-of-cost guided tours for public school groups

SHORE THING

This popular free series offers late hours in the galleries every

Thursday night throughout the summer. In addition to free hours,

Shore Thing offered tours of exhibitions, live music, a cash bar, and

the chance to mingle with old friends and new on the greens of

the seaside Edwards Family Sculpture Garden. In Fiscal Year 2015,

more than 2,598 visitors enjoyed Shore Thing at MCASD La Jolla.

KIDS AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

SUMMER C.A.M.P. (CONTEMPORARY ART, MEDIA

& PROCESS)

MCASD successfully welcomed 80 students ages 6 to 12 for

three weeks of art-making workshops led by local artists.

C.A.M.P.ers discovered out-of-the ordinary materials and

learned about artists’ processes as they discussed artwork in

the Museum’s galleries.

FAMILY ARTLAB

Family ArtLAB combines an in-gallery conversation and hands-on

art-making experience to allow families with 5- to 11-year-old

children to further explore processes and materials inspired by

works on view.

In Fiscal Year 2015, Family ArtLAB: From Doodle to Drafting

welcomed families to explore the exhibition James Drake:

Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash), where they created

charcoal drawings inspired by the works on view. In the fall, Family

ArtLABs explored the exhibitions Jack Whitten: Five Decades

of Painting; Laugh-in: Art, Comedy, Performance; Gravity and

Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui; and Dear Nemesis, Nicole

Eisenman 1993–2013. Participants experimented with painting

tools, found objects, and ideas around satire and humor.

and select community groups, a needs-based transit scholarships

for Title 1 schools, free-of-cost self-guided tours for higher

education groups, and free admission to visiting school groups and

higher education group members age 25 and younger.

EXTENDED SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP (ESP) PROGRAM

MCASD’s Extended School Partnership (ESP) program empowers

teachers to use the Museum as an extension of the classroom.

By developing the teacher’s ability to incorporate contemporary

art into their curriculum, MCASD provides a way to reinstate

arts-based learning in the classroom. The program consists of

professional learning opportunities for the classroom teacher,

a pre-visit session in the school, multiple weeks of class visits to

the Museum, and mid-term critic sessions at the school. At the

end of the program, MCASD hosts a culminating event inviting

the school’s community, as well as students’ families and friends,

to celebrate their accomplishments and showcase their artwork

at the Museum.

During Fiscal Year 2015, the Museum collaborated with 51

teachers, serving 1,276 students and hosting 13 showcases with

partnering schools. This year’s partners included: The Bishop’s

School; High Tech High Chula Vista; San Diego High School

(MVPA); La Jolla Country Day School; Canyon Crest High; Mt.

Miguel High School; The Charter School of San Diego; The

Museum School; Kearny High School-Digital Media & Design; San

Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts; Chula Vista High

School; Hoover High School; and e3 Civic High School.

EDUCATOR PROGRAMS

MCASD believes in the value of professional development for

educators and continued to offer programs to help develop

educators’ capacities to integrate the arts into their classrooms.

In September of Fiscal Year 2015, MCASD hosted a special

opportunity for educators to learn in the museum at Educators

Engage! The event featured notable J Paul Getty Museum

Education Specialist and coauthor of Teaching in the Art

Museum: Interpretation as Experience, Elliot Kai-Kee, Ph.D. The

group explored ways to connect classroom goals with learning

in the Museum with break-out sessions led by MCASD partner

teachers and the Museum’s Gallery Educators. Teachers enjoyed

a brown bag lunch before attending a talk about using museums

as a resource for classroom learning.

ART OASIS

In Fiscal Year 2015, MCASD launched a partnership with

Combat Arts, a local nonprofit organization that provides art

experiences for combat troops, to create San Diego ArtOASIS—a

comprehensive art-based program to support the recovery of

active military personnel overcoming Post-Traumatic Stress

Disorder (PTSD).

Through the ArtOASIS program, the Museum offered a series

of private gallery tours and weekly art-making workshops that

culminated in a publicly presented showcase of the participants’

artworks at MCASD La Jolla.

Throughout the partnership, MCASD’s Education Curator Cris

Scorza, local artist Perry Vasquez, and artist and Combat Arts

Founder Elizabeth Washburn worked with military psychologists

and recreational therapists to establish constructive dialogs

through process-oriented art workshops with PTSD patients.

TEEN PROGRAMS

TEEN ADVISORY GROUP (TAG)

The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is at the core of MCASD’s teen

programs. Composed of a diverse group of up to 20 teens

representing high schools from across San Diego County,

TAG explores social issues through the lens of contemporary

art. From meeting with local artists to discussing art in

the Museum’s galleries, TAG members gain insight into the

art world that helps them to imagine, develop, and realize

projects designed to reach the wider Museum audience. They

also dedicate time to learning about the design, promotion,

and staffing of the Museum’s youth programs. Their efforts

culminate in the TAG Showcase that takes place each year in

late spring.

This year MCASD offered a special Teen Boot C.A.M.P. session

for 12- to 15-year-old Summer C.A.M.P.ers. Teen Boot C.A.M.P.

was specifically designed for C.A.M.P.ers who are ready to

take their art to the next level with classes from professional

contemporary artists. Boot C.A.M.P.ers learned about

conceptual art, taking inspiration from artworks on view to

create their own idea-driven works of art.

GALLERY EDUCATORS

MCASD Gallery Educators continue to be an incredible asset to

our programming, building relationships with our audiences and

partnering with school teachers and administrators to develop

comprehensive curriculum rooted in contemporary art. Gallery

Educators offer inquiry-based discussions for visiting schools,

higher education students, and school groups. They are trained

in both exhibition content and gallery teaching pedagogy on a

regular basis to ensure that MCASD offers its visitors the highest

quality experience possible.

In Fiscal Year 2015, MCASD employed 12 Gallery Educators.

< MCASD ANNUAL REPORT >CONTRIBUTIONS

MEMBERSHIP

MCASD saw another year of growth in Membership with an

almost 20% increase over the previous fiscal year, in part due to

the launch of the new monthly Membership program. The new

program allows Members to break their annual fee into 12 months

of payments, beginning as low as $5 a month for the Museum’s

e-members. This new offering allowed the option of dividing higher

level memberships with increased benefits into 12 low payments.

The Museum continued to offer a robust line-up of Member

events such as the Avant Garde group’s Contemporary Art Thing

(C.A.T.) series, which featured a visit to the prestigious private

art collection of the ResMed Corporate offices.

The Architecture + Design: Meet the New San Diego program for

the Museum’s Donor and Benefactor Circle Members continued

to experience exciting growth. Programing included a tour and

reception at the home of Ron and Cathy Busick with architect

Sebastian Marsical, as well as a tour of the newly launched

Quartyard Community space downtown.

MCASD’s Membership and Education Departments continued to

offer the successful Field Trip program with four sold-out trips

from Tijuana to Tecate, and from San Diego to San Francisco.

INTERNATIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY COLLECTORS

The Collectors Circle, comprised of MCASD’s International and

Contemporary Collectors Membership groups, continued to grow

and make a substantial impact on the success of Fiscal Year

2015, raising funds that directly supported the Museum’s diverse

exhibitions and programs.

A highlight of the year was the annual Selection Dinner. This year

the event celebrated 30 years and was sponsored by Northern

Trust and the San Diego County BWM Centers. Over 100

Members joined and cast their votes to acquire three new works

for the Museums’ permanent collection: James Drake’s The

Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash) — Chapter 3, 2014,

Nicole Eisenman’s Under the Table 2, 2014 and T. Kelly Mason’s

Grey Skies SW, Reece Mews, South Kensington, London (Bacon

Triptych 1), 2014.

The Museum’s Travel Committee continued to plan

outstanding domestic and International art-focused trips.

The group travelled internationally to Berlin and Munich,

where they enjoyed a private welcome reception at the U.S.

Embassy in Berlin, visits to some of the most exclusive private

collections in the world, intimate studio tours with some of

MCASD’s favorites artists including Olafur Eliasson and Matt

Mullican, and a full-scale architectural and historical overview

of these two vibrant cities.

Domestically, the group enjoyed an in depth tour of New York

City where they toured the new Whitney Museum with Director

Adam Weinberg and explored galleries in Chelsea. Members also

visited the studios of Christo, Sean Landers, and Cordy Ryman

and enjoyed Teresita Fernandez’s Fata Morgana installation at

Madison Square Garden.

INSTITUTIONAL GIVING

We are deeply appreciative to the government agencies,

foundations, and corporations that invest in our mission. In Fiscal

Year 2015, grant funding helped to advance key initiatives and

launch exciting new projects.

MCASD’s original, touring exhibition and publication Jack

Whitten: Five Decades of Painting was supported by grants

from The National Endowment of the Arts, Lannan Foundation,

and LLWW Foundation. RBC Wealth Management provided

lead underwriting for the exhibition. In addition, Mandel

Weiss Charitable Trust continued its generous support of the

Museum’s exhibition season.

Qualcomm Foundation continued its incredible support for our

25 and Under free admission program, allowing the Museum

to welcome over 16,000 young people free of charge. Resmed

Foundation and the City of Chula Vista awarded grants to

support MCASD’s Extended School Partnership (ESP) program.

Gould Family Foundation and George and Cynthia Mitchell

Foundation provided support to MCASD’s Teen Advisory Group.

A grant from the California Arts Council’s Creative California

Communities program helped to launch ArtOASIS—a pilot

project to support the recovery of active duty military personnel

overcoming Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and combat

related stress. In collaboration with Combat Arts San Diego,

MCASD created a new series of private gallery tours and

weekly art-making workshops at the Point Loma Naval Base

that culminated in a public showcase of the troops’ artwork

on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at MCASD La Jolla. The Seeley

Foundation also provided seed funding for ArtOASIS.

The Museum received a $20,000 grant from the County

of San Diego Neighborhood Reinvestment Program at the

recommendation of Supervisor Ron Roberts. With this funding,

MCASD was able to install a new fire suppression system at

our Downtown location. MCASD was also the beneficiary of

an $18,885 grant from Las Patronas to purchase movable art

storage racks. The racks were a critical improvement for the care

and protection of the Museum’s expanding permanent collection.

Monte Carlo: Jet Set was presented by San Diego County BMW

Centers, along with lead sponsorship from Shuback Aviation,

Lanvin, South Coast Plaza, Northern Trust, Cooley LP, and

Modern Luxury magazine. The Annual Selection Dinner was made

possible by underwriting from Northern Trust.

MCASD remains immensely grateful to the City of San Diego

Commission for Arts and Culture and the County of San Diego

Community Enhancement Fund for their steadfast financial

support and advocacy for the arts. The Highland Street

Foundation and Mandel Weiss Charitable Trust also provided

grants for general operating support.
