About [What’s unique?]

Sponsorship is your opportunity to express God’s love to a child through prayers and encouragement. It also goes beyond a child...you’re influencing their family, community, and even future generations with the love of Christ! Here are some unique aspects that we value: It’s a Christ-centered ministry All Lifeline’s sponsorship programs are Christ-centered and share His love with the children and families. Our prayer is that the children come to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, and then share His love with others!

The ministry benefits the children You are investing in thousands of children! You are linked with one child to personally get to know them, but your donations go further to maintain and grow the ministry for all the children. The children receive the benefits specific to the program they are enrolled in, regardless if they are sponsored or waiting for a sponsor.

Build a relationship with a child As a sponsor, you can personally get to know the child you sponsor through emails and/or experience the culture and world of the child you sponsor lives in through a Lifeline short-term mission trip.

Express love tangibly You can send a gift package to the child you sponsor and/or purchase items through Lifeline. We take a picture of the sponsor child receiving the gift(s), which you can access online.

About [Program overview]

How a child becomes eligible for sponsorship: Once a child enrolls into one of Lifeline’s sponsorship programs (see program types below), they become eligible for sponsorship. We then seek out sponsors for the children to help support the program benefits they receive. Without the support of sponsors, these programs would not be available to the children! A child can be sponsored at any point after they are enrolled, and the child may be sponsored for the duration they are in Lifeline’s program. Types of sponsorship programs To provide these programs, your monthly sponsorship contribution is combined with the donations of all other sponsors to support the sponsorship program as a whole. It is important to note that your donations do not go into the hands of the child you sponsor nor are they put on reserve for the child. As a sponsor, you are linked to a specific child so that you can get to know them and their family, pray for their needs, and be an expression of God’s love to them. Nutrition program Children are placed in this program for multiple reasons, including malnutrition, the single parent cannot provide for all the children, the mother cannot breastfeed the infant/multiple births, etc. The child, with their parent/guardian, comes to clinic each week to be examined and to receive assistance based on their nutritional needs, which can include medical treatment, age appropriate foods, vitamins, and/or other benefits. The child and parent/guardian are also fed spiritually through God’s Word and prayed with.

Christian schools Our Christian schools are open to anyone in the community, regardless of their economic status or religious beliefs...we want all children to have the ability to learn and grow in knowledge, while embracing them in God’s unconditional love! Our schools begin with kindergarten and continue through elementary or middle school. As part of their education, the children attend Bible classes and take part in devotions, are taught the education curriculum mandated by the Haitian government, and are part of additional programs initiated by the school staff, such as computer science, sports, and reading. The students also receive a healthy school lunch and health/dental care. When a child completes or leaves the program You are notified when we learn that the child you sponsor has completed or leaves the program. At that time, you have the option to sponsor a new child who is waiting for a sponsor, donate to Lifeline’s ministry, or step away from your commitment. Please note: Many times we are not given a reason why the child is no longer participating in the program, as this is very cultural. The families we serve live transient lives and they may move if a lease expires, better opportunities arise, family circumstances require relocation, etc. If this happens to you, then celebrate with God the impact that you and the program staff have had, and the seeds you have planted in the life of a child, their family, and their community!

Formerly sponsored children It can be hard to say goodbye to the child you sponsor, when you built a relationship with the child and their family. If the formerly sponsored child remains in the community and can be located, then you have the opportunity to continue that relationship after they graduate or are no longer in Lifeline’s programs. You may then continue to email and/or send gifts to them, following the same guidelines provided in this handbook. If you choose to sponsor a new child: you are linked to a new sponsored child so that you can get to know them and their family, pray for their needs, and be an expression of God’s love with them. If you choose to continue a relationship with the former child but choose not to sponsor another child: you’ll then come alongside Lifeline as a Spark member, our $12 per month club. Your automatic, recurring monthly gift enables the ongoing ministry to all the children and communities. Today, there are countless numbers of children who have graduated through Lifeline’s programs and are giving back to their communities, along with generations who are now living for Christ...all because they had the opportunity to be part of a Christ-centered program in their community. Learn more at lifeline.org/spark.

About [Frequently asked questions]

Find more answers to your questions at lifeline.org/sponsorFAQs What are the children’s greatest needs? The spiritual needs of the children are foremost; therefore, daily prayer is requested for the child you sponsor and their family. The schools and nutrition programs minister to the whole community, which means children and families may not be Christians when they first enter our programs. Our goal is to reach them for Christ, while ministering to their educational, nutritional, and/or health needs. Can my child read English? In general, the children cannot read English. How long can I sponsor the child I am linked with? You may sponsor the child the entire time they are enrolled in one of Lifeline’s sponsorship programs. At what age will the child complete school? That depends upon how old the child was when they started school, as students begin at varying ages. Disruptions in learning, such as natural disasters/hurricanes, illnesses, or political upheavals also impact the school year and the child’s progress in school. Are Lifeline’s schools only for Christians? No! In fact, the purpose of all of Lifeline’s ministries are to evangelize. Registration is open to anyone in the community. Students in Lifeline schools come from all backgrounds: Catholic, voodoo, other denominations, or families with no religious practice. Parents allow their children to hear God’s Word in order to receive a good education and the other benefits provided through Lifeline.

12

How do I find out what’s happening in the life of the child I sponsor? We strive to keep you informed of special events or special needs in the life of the child you sponsor (baptisms, illnesses, etc.) as we learn of them, but information does not always reach us immediately. Therefore, we encourage you to email the child you sponsor and give them an opportunity to share their life with you! Send your email to [email protected] (see page 29 for details). You may request updates and information on the child you sponsor, such as housing needs, if you are interested in purchasing a new home. Simply email [email protected] or call 614-794-0108. How many people sponsor a child? Typically, only one person sponsors a child, unless a sponsor chooses to partner with a friend/relative in sponsoring the child. Does my child sponsorship contribution go to the child? Your monthly contributions are combined with the donations of all other sponsors to support the sponsorship program. All children in the sponsorship program – whether they are sponsored or still waiting for a sponsor – are being blessed with the benefits of the program. Your sponsorship contributions, along with donations from fellow Lifeline donors, enable children who are still waiting for a sponsor to be part of the program. Your contribution benefits the child you are linked with along with the thousands of other children within the sponsorship program! Note: The gift purchases you make through Lifeline do go directly to the child you sponsor.

13

What if I can no longer continue my sponsorship? Please contact us as soon as possible so that we may find another sponsor. If possible, locate a friend/family member to continue your sponsorship and notify us to transfer the child. What happens if I get behind in my sponsorship contribution? If your sponsorship giving lapses for a period of time with no communication from you, then we will attempt to contact you to determine if you would like to continue your sponsorship. If you choose not to continue with your sponsorship or if we do not get a response back from you, we will end your sponsorship so that the child can be linked to a new sponsor. In addition, communications and sending gifts to your child also discontinues. Why can’t I mail letters and/or gifts directly to the child? There is not direct mail service to all of the population, and if there is service, frequent loss occurs; gifts may be stolen. Also, you would not receive a photo of the child you sponsor with your gift!

Express love [Overview]

Sending gifts is an optional benefit that many sponsors enjoy. You are not required to send gifts to the child you sponsor. Why gifts? Gifts are a joyful expression of your love for the child you sponsor. But please be sensitive to the culture and family: you want to be a blessing and encouragement to the family. You don’t want to outdo the parents through excessive gifts, or bring shame to them because of their difficulty to provide their family’s daily needs. Gift deadlines: January-February and July-August Gifts may be sent two times per year. Please note: It will take several months for the child to receive their gifts, due to processing, shipping, customs, and distributing the gifts. Reminder: to send gifts and/or purchase gift items through Lifeline, your sponsorship contributions must be up-to-date.

• You must be listed as the current sponsor for the child • You must meet the commitment of $40 per month per child

and be current in contributions. Simply contact us at [email protected] or 614-794-0108 if you need to check your contribution status.

• Others may not send gifts to children that are sponsored by someone else.

Express love [Gift packages]

How to prepare and mail your gift package Here are the most effective and efficient ways you can prepare and send your gift packages! 1) Find a container for your gift items You may use a small shoebox, plastic container, or small backpack. Since we want gifts to be small reminders of your love, send just one gift package per child per gift deadline. Important note: Your gift is placed into a standard sponsor shipping bag for identification during distribution. If the contents of your gift package do not fit in the shipping bag, then the extra items will be shared with another child who is waiting for a sponsor. 2) Gather items for your gift package You’ll find helpful ideas on page 21. It is also important that you do not include any of the following in your gift:

• Items on the Do Not Send list on page 22. • Money for the child you sponsor • Your personal information, such as your phone number or

email address 3) Condense, condense, condense! As you place the items in your chosen container, discard all the extra packing materials that the items came in. For example: remove pens from the original packaging and slip them into a

Page 19: Table of Contents · guidelines provided in this handbook. If you choose to sponsor a new child: you are linked to new a sponsored child sothat you can get to know them and their

19

plastic, zip-top bag, and remove toys from their cardboard packaging. Our goal is to send as little excess material with the gifts as possible, so that the trash doesn’t end up in the streets and waterways of the child’s hometown. 4) Repackage Repackage anything that could leak or spill in plastic, zip-top bags:

• All liquids, such as shampoo, bubble blow, etc • Toothpaste, bar soap, crayons, markers, pens, etc

These zip-top bags are also a great, reusable item for the child you sponsor and their family! 5) Label your gift package This is important! If you or the child’s information is not included in the gift package, then we can’t get your gift to the child you sponsor! Include the following on the outside and inside of your gift package:

• Child's complete name & child’s school ID number (found on your child’s photo card)

• Sponsor name & Account Number (AN) (located on the cover letter)

Note: Do not gift wrap your packages since all gifts are opened, inspected and repackaged prior to shipping. 6) Send your $10 donation for gift processing Your $10 donation assists in the costs of gift processing, shipping, in country transportation, and photography services. There are two ways to donate this:

Page 20: Table of Contents · guidelines provided in this handbook. If you choose to sponsor a new child: you are linked to new a sponsored child sothat you can get to know them and their

20

1) By check: Simply mail your $10 check made out to "Lifeline Christian Mission."

a) Mailing address: Lifeline Christian Mission PO Box 2288 Monument, CO 80132

b) You may also include other donations on the same check; simply notate the gift designation on the check memo or on an enclosed note.

2) Online: Log into your account and go to “My Sponsor Dashboard.” Locate the child you sponsor, click on the blue “Actions” button, and select “Send a gift.” Now, select the processing fee and add it to your cart and checkout. Note: you are welcome to purchase additional gift items online; simply add it to your cart and checkout. If you need to set up your account, simply visit lifeline.org/sponsorlogin.

7) Mail your gift package to Lifeline Mail the gift package to:

Lifeline Christian Mission 921 Eastwind Drive, Suite 104 Westerville, Ohio 43081

Note: Lifeline inspects all packages (for breakage, spills, and appropriateness), condenses the packaging, and then repackages the gifts into our sponsor shipping bags, which includes the child's identifying information.

Express love [Gift suggestions]

We suggest including something useful, something educational, and something fun in your gift package! Below are some ideas, but feel free to be creative!

School items Bookbag, chalk and chalkboard (small), colored pencils, coloring books, crayons, English/French dictionary, erasers, flashcards, glue, lunch box, markers, notebooks, pencil sharpeners, pencils, pens, plastic bowl and lid for lunch (and include a spoon), rulers, scissors, water paints. Books in French or Haitian Creole (which are hard to find!): Books need to be non-violent, educational or spiritually enriching, and wholesome in their content. Miscellaneous Canned meat (with a can opener), clothing (details follow), hair brushes, bows/barrettes, jewelry (pierced ears), mirrors, peanut butter, perfumes and powders, photo albums, sewing kits (small), soap (antibacterial), stationery (small), t-shirts (Christian themes), toothbrush and paste, twin sheet set and mattress cover, vitamins (children & infant; chewable vitamins, but not gummy vitamins), wallets, and watches. Clothing: types & sizes All types of summer clothing are needed: shirts, shorts, dresses, skirts, shoes, socks, and underwear. Please note: Culturally, girls do not wear slacks or shorts; they wear knee-length skirts. And

Page 22: Table of Contents · guidelines provided in this handbook. If you choose to sponsor a new child: you are linked to new a sponsored child sothat you can get to know them and their

22

remember, it is summer year-round in Haiti and most people do not have electricity in their homes. A “rule of thumb” is to buy the same size as the child’s age until they reach the age of 15. Children who receive gifts for the July/August deadline are measured, and the measurements are accessible at lifeline.smugmug.com in the event you wish to send clothing or shoes as gifts. Toys Balls, cars/trucks, dolls/clothing, dominoes, flutes, hand-held games, harmonicas, jacks, jump ropes, kites, magic slates, marbles, modeling clay, play dishes, puzzles, and soccer balls. *Note: Include extra batteries for toys (if needed) and check with your local post office for guidelines when shipping batteries in packages. Do not send:

• “Pop top” type cans of meat, etc. (“pop tops” explode) • Buckets or oversized packages • Books or games that require English to play or read • Chocolate or foods that may melt • Packaged snack items (granola bars, etc); they attract ants

and rodents during the long duration they are in shipping and storage.

• Anything in glass • Toy weapons or toys of violent nature (guns, knives, squirt

guns, etc.) • Combustible items, such as lighters, matches, or explosives

of any type • Anything to ride with wheels: bikes, scooters, skateboards,

etc. In general, there are no sidewalks, the terrain is not suitable, and riding in the roads is dangerous.

Cash gifts to child Additional funds for the child you sponsor and/or their family can be given directly as a cash gift in their currency; the suggested amount is $20 - $100 (U.S.) per gift deadline. This money is entrusted to the family to assist with basic needs but is not large enough to be misused or create dependency. Lifeline does not track or follow up with the families on how the gift money is spent. Cash gifts are over and above your monthly sponsorship. The cash gift is given at the same time the other gifts are distributed. A photo of the child (and sometimes with the parent or responsible adult) is taken at the time money and all other gifts are given. This can be given online through your sponsor dashboard (more details on page 25 “How to purchase gifts online”) or include the additional amount on your check with your regular contribution and notate how the additional funds are to be used. Please note: a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the cash contribution.

Build a relationship [Email your child]

Emailing your child is an optional benefit that many sponsors enjoy. You are not required to correspond. The sponsored children enjoy receiving emails! Many children and families have been encouraged in their faith through their sponsorship relationship. Therefore, take a few minutes to write to the child you sponsor and allow them the opportunity to get to know you! Communication is initiated by you sending an email to the child you sponsor (via Lifeline) and then they will respond to you. Email your sponsored child

• This is the best option to connect with the child you sponsor!

• When you log into your account at Lifeline’s website, simply click on your account name and click on “My Sponsor Dashboard” for details on sending an email to your sponsored child.

• You may send an email once each quarter throughout the school year. We cannot pass on your correspondence if it is received during summer break since it is difficult to locate the students. The Haitian children's school year is typically September – May.

Build a relationship [Meet your child]

You can personally visit the child you sponsor and their family through a Lifeline short-term mission trip. You’ll experience the culture and world that the child you sponsor lives in, while serving Christ in the mission field. Begin your trip at lifeline.org/go When you meet the child you sponsor and their family, you are welcome to bring a gift. As you consider your gifts, we suggest the following guidelines:

• One article of clothing: you will be provided the clothing size of the child you sponsor, if this is something they need.

• Appropriate book: French or Creole, based the child’s age/ability. Pick a favorite book to inspire discovery and further conversations with the child you sponsor.

• A family game: We are all about building families! Consider something that would bring the family together. Preferably, bring games that do not require batteries, electricity or require reading English.

Important reminder about gifts: As a sponsor, your role is loving, teaching, leading, and demonstrating Christ to the children and their families. Gifts should never overshadow relationship; they should be the fruit of a healthy relationship…a blessing, not the motivation. The children love to receive a gift from you, but what they really cherish is you and who you are!
