Member Spotlight: Kanyon McLean “personas” of characters from the original, but got rid of the “specifics.” Instead of being a “Julie Andrews from The Sound of Music charac-ter,” I decided to just go for a more “folksinger” type. Does that make sense? (laughs) As for songs– I kept the ones that I thought everyone knows. Courtney: What is the best aspect of creating such a show? Kanyon: The creativity and dressing up in funky costumes. I LOVE costumes! Courtney: What is your past experience with this sort of creative work? Kanyon: I started singing with the USF Singers back home when I was seven. It is a group that each November, we meet on Sundays for re-hearsal. Then throughout the entire month of December, we perform our sing-a-long show for various nursing homes, averaging about 20 homes by December 23rd. Each year is a differ-ent show and theme with new characters. It’s always interesting!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Thank you Courtney for this wonderful article. It proves that whatever skills or hobbies you have, you can always implement a service project around them. On January 9th, UF performed at Emeritus, a retirement community in Gainesville. Their project was a success and I wish the both of them continued luck in their lives!

One UF CKI member uses her skills as a musical producer for a holiday service project. Past UF Editor Court-ney Collings conducted an interview with Kanyon McLean on the creative process behind their service. ——————————————————————————————— BY: Courtney Collings Past Club Editor University of Florida ——————————————————————————————— Courtney: How did you go about choosing the script? Kanyon: Before attending college, I was a mem-ber of a group back home called the USF Sing-ers, so I head a ton of old scripts to search through. I found one that I thought was easy enough to pick up quickly from the actors’ perspectives and that was still good for the audience. To make it quicker for everyone to pick up the characters and such, I kept the

Club Spotlight: University of Central Florida BY: Beth Paris Immediate Past District Secretary University of Central Florida ——————————————————————————————— The University of Central Florida has grown substantially in the last decade, and the Circle K club has kept pace. Our University now has the 3rd largest undergraduate enrollment in the nation, and represents the true “big school” attitude. However, while some large schools can sometimes make each student feel insignifi-cant, the campus community at UCF certainly reflects a family. Service is at the heart of the Golden Rule, and has integrated into almost every aspect of campus life. Service learning is not only a re-quirement of almost all degree programs, but it is actively promoted as an easy way to try out new experiences and explore other career op-tions without changing majors thirty times (although, as our clever nickname “U Can’t Finish” can suggest, some students still change their majors several times). Volunteer UCF provides opportunities for any and all students to take time out of their schedule to serve in a simple, student government-facilitated project.

UCF CKI has worked year-round supporting VUCF’s initiatives and has taken on the chal-lenges of several other campus projects as well. For instance, in the coming month, the Depart-ment of Housing and Residence Life will be coordinating a “Box City” Homelessness Awareness event, and through CKI’s connec-tions with the Coalition for the Homeless, we have committed ourselves to volunteering at this event to make it outstanding. UCF CKI has strong foundations in the dis-trict level, from the earliest days of our rechar-tering in 1996. Not only do we have an amaz-ing faculty advisor, who is also a member of our sponsoring Kiwanis club, but our Kiwanis advi-sor and several other members of East Orange County Kiwanis are also UCF CKI Alumni. Our Kiwanis Family relations truly make our club unique. In short, UCF CKI is an integral part of the Florida District and has been actively involved on our campus, and in our surrounding com-munity. We are always doing what we can to serve with our Kiwanis club, our university departments, and our community partnerships.

The Basics of CKI BY: Carl Fridh Florida District Editor State College of Florida—Bradenton ———————————————————————————–———— It’s the start of another great year for the Flor-ida District of CKI. I hope everybody is full of confidence and ready to start serving their com-munities. But please take a minute to refresh your mind on the three tenets of CKI. Circle K International (abbreviated CKI) is a nationwide chain of convenience store… just kidding. Actually, CKI is VERY different from that but we still like to serve our community as well as hang out with our fellow members and lead in our organization. CKI has three tenets; Service, Fellowship, and Leadership. Service is simple, serving others around us, but it can be executed a number of ways through a lot of various projects that we do throughout the year! It can be something as simple as a car wash to an all night fundraiser such as a team for Relay for Life. Fellowship basically encourages social times between members of our club, members in other clubs, etc. Socializing is a key part of life and a really integral part of Circle K International. Last but not least, there is Leadership. Lead-ership isn’t a type of boat that you ride around with T-Pain. There are several opportunities for leadership in our organization, especially on the club level, even further on the district level, and on an even grander scale in international. It is a really handy skill that will come into use several times during your life and one you would want to learn how to use.

University of Florida’s Passionately Pink Party BY: Courtney Collings Past Club Editor University of Florida ————————————————————————— Pink drinks, pink attire, and plenty of music…this may seem like a typical themed party on a Friday night. But this Friday, we attended a party framed around a purpose, not just a motif. Everyone in attendance came to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foun-dation. However, fun was not in short supply. UF Circle K International sponsored this event on February 5th, bringing together over 70 people to the Gaines-ville Place Clubhouse, raising over

$500 for the cause. Marsha Cohen, service chair, put to-gether the event and fostered success. She dedicated months to planning this project: Organizing the event, putting together committees for assistance in initiating her plan into action and col-lecting many food and prize donations. In addition, we were fortunate enough to listen to a great guest speak of her mother’s battle with triple nega-tive cancer and her courage throughout her experiences. She served as even more inspiration for the attendees to help the cause and those affected by cancer.

International LSSP: Serving Under the Arch

BY: Krystal Weaver Immediate Past Florida Governor International SPICE Committee Secretary University of South Florida—Tampa ———————————————————————————————— Are you interested in serving a community with a ton of your closest K-Family friends from all over the world? I mean, is there another reason you are in this club? Well boy, do I have the pro-ject for you! Every year for the past 9 years there has been an International Large Scale Service project! This is a project that any CKI member in the world is invited to and it is the 4 days before International Convention. This year it will be in St. Louis, Missouri and you better believe that it will be fun! There is 3 days full of service while you get to meet new friends and see the change being made in a com-munity. The last day is a fellowship day where we will have fun activities for everyone to participate in. This is one of my favorite weeks and has been for the past three years! If you want to be a part of making a change in St Louis and meeting some people before ICON that you will bond with for a little over a week, I will see you there! Registra-tion prices are still being considered but it will be UNDER $200.00. Be a part of the 10th annual LSSP and I will see you there!

ICON 2010 BY: Brian J. Rigney Member Santa Fe College —————————————————————————— Be excited, the Circle K International Convention, ICON, is coming! It will be held August 4th-8th, 2010 at the home of the Great Arch; Saint Louis, Missouri! This is the first time that Circle K is holding the convention on a college cam-pus in order to lower the cost for you. The convention is at Washington Univer-sity and the cost is $395 for those who register before July 1st.

The cost includes your: —Convention registration

—Housing —$40 on-campus meal card

It may sound like a high price, but with four months until ICON, you have plenty of time to start searching peoples’ couches for money. The reason you should go to ICON is to hang out with your fellow Circle K’ers, represent your club in CKI business, meet people from around the world, and get down at some mad rad awesome dances! I hope to see our awesome district there in full-on Florida force!

Governor’s Word BY: Timothy Wolfinger Florida District Governor University of Central Florida ———————————————————————————— Hello Mighty Mighty Florida District! I hope everyone had a great time at the District Convention! If you have not al-ready have done so, please take the time to thank the convention committee and all those involved for all their efforts and hard work for ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. First, I would like to start off by intro-ducing myself. My name is Tim Wolfinger and I am a junior at the University of Cen-tral Florida where I study Political Science in an International Track. I have been in the K-Family since the end of my 6th grade year when I joined the Laurel Nokomis Builder’s Club. Little did I know that I would be so lucky to have made it so far as to become the Governor of this amazing district! Many times during my decade in the K-Family people have always asked me why Kiwanis. My answer to them is why not. Kiwanis to me is more than an organiza-tion. They are my guides, my friends, my family. There are few students in the world that are willing to give up a Friday night for a fundraiser, or willing to give up a

weekend to volunteer with the homeless, or even wake up (or stay up all night) to attend a 7:30 am Kiwanis meeting. The K-Family cares about our home, school and community. Whenever I am going through a rough time, I can always turn to my fellow mem-bers for support. That is why Kiwanis! Just look at our tenants. We give individuals the leadership skills they need in order to be successful, we give back through service to the community that has given so much to us and we bond and build friendship through fellowship that will last a life time. My current roommate is actually someone that I was in Builder’s Club with. I encour-age members to please reap all the benefits and opportunities available for you as Cir-cle K members. This coming year I have huge aspirations for the District. I envision an epic growth that will push off to be a leader for all of International. This feat is something I believe can easily be accomplished. I have met with so many of you during DCON, and heard all the marvelous ideas that you have. Now is the time to turn these ideas into reality. I implore all members to now step up and make a difference. Change the life of individuals around you. Bring a friend to your meeting and share with

them the greatness that is CKI. Attend ser-vice projects and give back to the commu-nity that is helping to support your educa-tion through taxes. Now is the time, step up, and together let’s make a difference! In friendship and service,

Timothy R. Wolfinger Timothy Wolfinger Florida District Governor Circle K International

Alumni Remarks BY: John Sullivan Florida CKI Alumni Assoc. Vice President ——————————————————————————————— Greetings, Florida CKI! With a new year comes new direction and focus. That is particularly true of the Florida CKI Alumni Association, which has elected a new, energetic board to serve for the 2010-11 year. As one of only two individuals serving on the old and new boards, I want to share with you some of the new initiatives that the alumni will be tackling this year. The alumni board met on Saturday, March 13th to discuss our goals for the coming term and beyond. In particular, we decided to de-velop a new club focus. As such, we are initiat-ing two new programs. First, we will be rolling out an alumni advisor program, with the goal being to provide each club with an alumni

advisor by the end of the term. This individual will serve as a resource to your clubs, providing guidance and support if and when you need it. Additionally, they will keep you apprised of Florida CKI Alumni Association program and scholarship opportunities. It is our hope that each club finds this resource helpful. The second program is a Club Service Grant program. Initially, financial constraints will require that these grants are small, but it is our hope that once we finish the endowment proc-ess of the “Uncle” Don Knowles Scholarship, we will be able to offer larger grants for clubs to perform greater service projects. More informa-tion will be coming on this program as it is developed. We will also be researching and developing a new internship program. It is our hope to connect CKI members with Kiwanians and

other adults in their field of study who can provide hands-on learning opportunities. Our alumni board is fantastic, motivated, and ready to begin working hard for the clubs of the Florida District. If you have any questions or would like information on our programs and how to get involved, feel free to contact any of the following people:

Editor’s Korner BY: Carl Fridh Florida District Editor State College of Florida– Bradenton ————————————————————————————— Hello Florida, it’s the start to another great year of service in the Sunshine State. With a new board and new opportunities in a new decade, I hope Florida CKI continues its success after more than fifty years. And I hope our district stands out with this news-letter and other unique things. I picture the Kapers as a compilation of the best our district has to offer and I feel we can continue to stand out with great people and service projects. Last year’s An-swer KEE videos stood out among some of the more entertaining and informative vid-eos among other CKI districts and interna-tional. As being part of that team, maintain-ing the YouTube page and adding the vid-eos to the main site last year, I would like to thank Taylor Morgan (PR Chair, USF Tampa) and Michael Spicochi (MD&E Chair, UF) for their hard work.

Another thing that makes our district stand out is the immense amount of service that we do. Several clubs have done amaz-ing service projects using their creative skills. A lot of clubs do Relay for Life, with that being a part of our Governor’s Project last year, with so many people passionate about a cause so close to many. I’ll also ad-mit all of that walking does help me lose weight though. But, to my friends in the district. As Ron Burgundy once said, “You stay classy.” I always have a lot of fun with people around the district, whether it is back home, in Tampa, or far away. And last but not least, the immense amount of Facebook messages and text mes-sages congratulating me with the name “Carol.” With that in mind, thank you Tom Ramiccio for giving me a name that will stick for a while and somehow manage to make me laugh every time. No matter how big or small, never change Florida… continue to be the standard of excellence in CKI!

Florida visits the Sweet Carolina’s District Convention BY: Christopher J. Searfoss Past Club President St. Petersburg College ——————————————————————————— From February 26-28 a select few mem-bers from the Florida District were in-vited to attend the Carolina's District Convention. Those select few were Todd Hildebran, Alex Garner, Krystal Weaver, Nicole McDowell, and myself. It was a remarkable experience being able to see just how the other districts prepared and hosted their district convention. The Carolina's DCON was hosted in Columbia, South Carolina. We stayed at a Ramada Inn, and it took us just about nine hours to drive from Florida to Co-lumbia. There were lots of really amazing things about this hotel such as an indoor pool that also led outside, there was a game area that had many pool tables, and there was another area with some

couches and tables that we all could just hang out talk and relax. I thought it was amazing being able to go and join another district and meet and get to know others outside of my dis-trict. They had really cool workshops such as a new member workshop which was an informative workshop about CKI. Letting new members know more details about Circle K, like what we do, where we do it, and a little history behind our organiza-tion. They also had a pie auction which I thought was amazing because they raised more money for one pie then I have ever seen since being in CKI. The most that was spent on one individual I believe was just about two hundred dollars. We also did a really cool service project on Saturday with the Boy Scouts of Amer-ica. We went to their headquarter build-ing and did quite a bit of landscaping such

as, pulling weeds, digging up trees, scraping up grass, laying mulch, and putting down weed proof material to keep the weeds out. I thought it was really cool because I got to do what I love to do with people I just met that love to do the same thing. Sunday was probably the worst day just because I know that it was our last day, and we were going to be leaving soon. All in all it was a great trip with lots of service, leadership and fellow-ship.

Our hard working Subregional Representative, Alex Garner, has been jet setting around the world over Spring Break. As an old saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” (now if that applied to research papers). Anyways, here are a few photos of Alex’s adventures...
