Head coach Joe Spano completed his 10th-year as the Lakers skipper in 2009, guiding Mercyhurst to one of its best seasons in program history and setting several personal milestones in the process. Spano earned his third career Coach of the Year honors and fi rst from his peers in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after his squad went 38-17 to tie the 2006 unit for the second-most victories behind only the 1997 team that went 40-8. Two players were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft, marking the third and fourth selections in the last three years from Spano’s squads as he has produced six draftees in his decade at the helm. Additionally, Spano and his charges swept a doubleheader at California (Pa.) on the last day of the regular season (April 25, 2009) to earn the PSAC West crown as Spano surpassed former Laker head coach and current Pittsburgh head coach Joe Jordano as the all-time winningest coach. The Lakers also advanced to the NCAA regional tournament for the fi rst time since 2000 and seventh overall tournament where they posted the best-ever fi nish with a 3-2 mark, winning their fi rst two contests before suffering a loss. Prior to the tourney appearance, Mercyhurst owned a 2-12 all-time record. Also, the Lakers had eight All-PSAC selections, including the Western Divi-sion Rookie of the Year in Ethan Santora and Pitcher of the Year in Nick Gillung. Other highlights included defeating a No.1-ranked team for the fi rst time in program history when Mercyhurst defeated Lynn University on March 1 by a 10-6 count. In 2008, Spano became the second coach in school history to win 250 games when the Lakers topped Northwood on May 4. Only one year earlier, on March 10, 2007, he won his 200th game. He has guided his squads to fi ve-straight winning seasons, a feat has been accomplished only one other time in school history. During that span, his teams have posted a 160-101-1 record and have won no fewer than 25 games in any of the fi ve years. Spano was named the GLIAC Coach of the year after he guided the 2006 squad to a 38-15-0 mark and a 23-9-0 record in the GLIAC, which tied for second place. The 2007 team followed that up with a 32-win performance and a 17-11 mark in the conference, earning the team’s second consecutive bid to the GLIAC Championship Tournament. Spano also won the GLIAC Coach of the Year award in 2000, his fi rst year as head man, when the Lakers fi nshed 35-18-1, took second in the GLIAC, and hosted the NCAA Division II North Central Regional. The 2006 team’s 38 wins were the most for a Laker squad since 1997. Mercyhurst qualifi ed for the GLIAC Tournament for the fi rst time since the confer-ence initiated playoffs in 2003. The Lakers hit .315 as a team in 2006, 28 points higher than 2005, and the staff ERA of 3.01 was more than a run lower than both the 2005 team’s and the next best mark in the GLIAC. Mercyhurst won 13 more games this year than last and fi nished three spots higher in the GLIAC than a pre-season coaches’ projection. Nine players were named all-conference. His 2007 team produced fi ve all-conference honorees, two players earned various all-region awards and the squad had the program’s fi rst All-American since 1998. That squad also featured a pair of players drafted in the 2007 MLB Draft, David Lough and Brian Espersen. Lough, an outfi elder, was the highest se-lected player in program history as an 11th round pick by Kansas City. Espersen, a pitcher, was the third highest pick in school history, going in the 18th round to Houston.

289-230-327 Spano came to Mercyhurst in January of 1998 after former head coach Joe Jor-dano and former assistant Joel Dombkowski were hired by the University of Pittsburgh. Spano worked for Dan DeCaprio (19-23 overall; 11-13 GLIAC) for one year and then for Scott Norwood (26-18; 19-11), before assuming the head job. He played for two years at Division I Boston University. When university offi cials decided to terminate the program in 1995 because of gender equity considerations, Spano moved to Division II Lewis University where, in two years, he hit a combined .360. He made the Great Lakes Valley All-Conference and North Central All-Region teams as a left fi elder and third baseman in 1997, batting .383, hitting 14 home runs, and knocking in 51 runners. His Lewis University teams went a combined 77-36 in two years, made the NCAA Regional Playoffs in 1996 and won the GLVC North his senior year. He also saw time on the mound for the Flyers, appearing in four games. He fi nished with a 2.45 ERA over his 3.2 innings of work. While at Lewis, Spano spent three summers in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, an NCAA-sanctioned wooden bat league. In 1996 he fi nished fi fth in the league in batting with a .342 average. Following his days at Lewis, he played one season with the DuBois County Dragons of the independent Heartland League. Spano holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Lewis University and earned his master’s certifi cate from Mercyhurst in 2000. Spano’s wife, the former Tina McMahon, attended Lewis University with him. The Spano’s have two daughters and a son. Daughter Jillian was born in May of 2001, son Joseph was born in December

Charles Spano is in his ninth year at Mer-cyhurst. Spano, a native of Queens, New York, graduated from Adelphi University in May of 2001. The brother of head coach Joe Spano, Charlie serves as the Lakers’ third base coach and recruiting coor-dinator. He also works closely with the infi elders and team’s base running. During his tenure, nine infi elders have earned all-conference honors, and he was instrumental in the recruiting of pitcher Brian Espersen, who was drafted in the 18th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Spano also served as an assistant coach with the Metro N.Y. Cadets of the ACBL in 2002-03. He helped the team to a Kaiser Division title in 2002. As a player at Adelphi, Spano played in 141 varsity games and was a three-year starter at third base. As a sophomore, he fi nished with one of the top fi elding percentages in Division II and was a member of the 1999 Division II Northeast Regional champions. He batted .400 during the regional playoffs, helping Adelphi to a fi fth-place fi nish at the Division II World Series.

Rick Iacobucci was added as an assistant at Mercyhurst in 2008 after serving as the head coach at Gannon for six years. During his tenure, the Golden Knights posted a record of 81-161 and im-proved the program’s win total for each of his fi rst fi ve years. In 2002, he led Gannon to a 12-16 conference mark, which was the highest GLIAC fi nish in school history. Iacobucci led the team to 20 wins the following year, marking the fi rst time the program reached the 20-win plateau in fi ve years. Iacobucci was hired for the Gannon head coaching job after serving as an assistant for two seasons. He was also an assistant at Penn State Behrend in 1995 and was the junior varsity coach at Mercyhurst Prep from 1996-98. While at Mercyhurst Prep, he helped the team to its fi rst-ever Metro League Championship in 1999 and a District 10 title in 1996. Iacobucci, an Erie native, is a graduate of McDowell High School and played baseball for two seasons at Penn State Behrend. Iacobucci and his wife, Suzanne, reside in Erie with their two sons, Chipper and Anthony.

As a senior, he batted .322 with 37 hits, 20 runs scored, and 17 runs batted in. During the summer of 2000, Spano played in the AAABA World Series. Spano earned a master’s certifi cate in organization leadership in 2003. He and his wife Catrina have two daughters, Caylen, born on Oct. 8, 2005, and Keira, born on July 7, 2009.

Penn State Erie ‘0130 A 2009 graduate of Mercyhurst College, John Mang will primarily direct the training and development of the Lakers pitching staff during his appointment as graduate assistant. Mang completed a bachelor of science in sportsmedicine and is currently working towards a master’s degree in organizational leadership. Mang was an integral part of the squad’s success in 2009, helping guide the Lakers to their seventh NCAA appearance and fi rst since the 2000 season. As a starter, Mang amassed a 10-1 record en route to setting a new single-season mile-stone in wins. He was undefeated against teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with his only loss coming at the hands of then-ranked No. 1 Lynn Univer-sity and eventual national championship winner. His successes also helped the Lakers claim the PSAC West regular season title and the division’s No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament where Mercyhurst would go on to fi nish as runner-up. For his career, Mang owns an 18-11 record in 195.1 innings pitched through 40 appearances, including 35 games started.

In 2009, Mercyhurst College made quite the im-pression in its fi rst season as a full-time member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after ending a 13-year affi liation with the Great Lakers Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Lakers posted one of the best seasons in program history, setting several team and individual marks. As a team, the Lakers fi nished tied with the 2006 squad for the second-most victories with a 38-17 re-cord, behind only the 1997 unit that went 40-8. They were the fi rst Mercyhurst unit to capture the PSAC regular season title and then added the pro-gram’s seventh selection to the NCAA regional tourna-ment after fi nishing as the runner-up in the conference tournament. At the NCAA Atlantic Regional, the Lakers posted the best-ever fi nish with a 3-2 mark, winning their fi rst two contests before suffering a loss. The Lakers also defeated a No.1-ranked team for the fi rst time in program history when they defeated Lynn University on March 1 by a 10-6 count. Individually, centerfi elder Jamie Walczak set the single-season mark for hits (76) while shortstop Jona-than Keppler established a new best for walks (47). Third baseman Ethan Santora tied the single-season homerun mark, blasting 16 roundtrippers. On the mound, right-hander John Mang went 10-1 to set a new standard in victories while Steve Grife tallied fi ve shutouts for his career, the best all-time. Also, head coach Joe Spano became the pro-gram’s all-time wins leader, surpassing Joe Jordano. Spano’s all-time record now sits at 289-230-3 in 10 seasons. The Lakers fi nished the 2009 season ranked in the top 30 of all three major polls and had three players advance to play professional baseball, including two taken in the MLB Draft. The success of the 2009 squad has set the stan-dard of excellence high, but with fi ve returning position players and two starting pitchers, Spano expects that his 2010 edition could push the program to new heights with the right blend of experience and leadership. Highlighting the returners are Santora, the PSAC West Freshman of the Year, and left-handed pitcher Nick Gillung, the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year. Other award-winning returning starters include second base-man/right-handed starter Adam Gray and rightfi elder Craig Denman. Both were named to the All-PSAC West Second Team a year ago. Filling the holes left by three veterans is para-mount to the Lakers success this year. A four-year starter in centerfi eld, Walcazak anchored the defense and provided a stable bat in the lineup in addition to his leadership qualities. Replacing two-year starter Jeff Stoll at fi rst base is also a necessity. Stoll’s quiet leadership and pow-erful offensive production from his cleanup spot could make or break this year’s squad. From the mound, replacing Grife and Mang will be a daunting task. The two left Mercyhurst with their names spattered in the record books. A bright spot, Mang returns as a graduate assistant coach and will guide a youthful pitching unit.

Outfi eld With the loss of Walczak, Spano will look to senior leftfi elder Trey Bennett and junior Denman to anchor the defense. Bennett (49 GS, 47 GP) will retain his

position in left while Denman (54 GS, 54 GP) makes the transition from rightfi eld to centerfi eld. Bennett is one of four Laker captains for 2010 and is coming off an All-Star summer in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Bennett is a steady performer both offensive-ly and defensively. His .291 batting average (43-for-148) helped to turn over the lineup while errorless play in 49 chances cemented the left side. An All-PSAC West performer in 2009, Denman posted the fi fth-best batting average (.323) among starters, collecting 61 hits in 189 trips. A consistent bat in the middle of the lineup, Denman will be relied upon for increased offensive production. The frontrunner for rightfi eld is junior Justin Ur-schel, a transfer from Monroe Community College. Urschel has a great arm and can cover a lot of ground with his speed. Senior Greg Turk should also see plen-ty of time in the outfi eld and could also be used at fi rst base. Sophomore Jaasiel Rivera provides depth in the outfi eld. The lefty showed improvement this fall with the bat.

Infi eld Three starters return in the infi eld to anchor the defense. The 2009 Lakers’ defense was the best in the West statistically, fi elding at a .958 percentage while turning 56 double plays (1st - PSAC). Reigning PSAC West Rookie of the Year Santora returns to the hot corner for his sophomore campaign. Santora was named to the All-PSAC West First Team in addition to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Honorable Mention squad af-ter tying the program’s single-season home run record (16). He should bat in the middle of the Lakers lineup. Leadoff man Keppler will start at shortstop for the second-straight season. Keppler broke the school record for walks in 2009 and had one of the highest on-base percentages in the league after recording a team-best 10 hit-by-pitches and 47 walks. Senior captain Adam Gray is a four-starter at sec-ond-base. Gray was an All-PSAC West Second-Team performer last season and is also one the team’s best pitchers. A versatile and fl exible player for the Lakers, Gray started 47 games at second base while appearing in seven contests as a pitcher, including six starts. First base is wide open after the loss of clean-up hitter Jeff Stoll. Senior captain John Blike could be a possibility on the corner after proving himself as one of the best situational hitters a year ago. Blike’s offensive ability will have him in the lineup on a daily basis but whether it’s at fi rst base or from the designated hitter position remains the unknown. Also looking to push for playing time at fi rst base is sophomore Dan Jergel and freshman Bill Ger-stenslager. Both should provide some punch from the left side and enhance a lineup that features a majority of right-handed hitters. Jergel and Gertenslager are both are coming off solid fall seasons. Additionally, Gerstenslager was also highly recruited pitcher out of high school. Other players who could see action at fi rst base include freshman Joe Cochran and transfer Kevin Mc-Call, who is the team’s best utility man. McCall should see innings at several different positions and is also a great base runner. Sophomore Kenny Walrond is another scrappy player who can roam all over the fi eld and played a valuable role on last year’s playoff team before a mid-season injury.

Sophomore Tom Kufel had a solid fall and is ca-pable of fi lling in on the infi eld when needed. Freshman Forrest Boggs is a switch hitter with great power poten-tial. He has raw skills in the fi eld but with a strong ethic could be a big contributor in the future.

Catchers Senior captain Adam Schlessel is back after mak-ing 24 starts behind the dish a year ago. Schlessel will return to his starting role again with junior DJ Haurin as backup looking look for an increased role. Transfers Adam Brentlinger and Nico Baldelli will also push for playing time in 2010. Both guys have strong arms and have improved in every aspect behind the plate.

Pitching The 2010 Lakers will look to continue a tradition of strong pitching staffs. Last season’s staff was one of the best rotations at Mercyhurst, with two pitchers selected in the MLB draft. Helping to cushion the transition will be defending PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Nick Gillung. As a sophomore, Gillung posted a 7-1 record and a 3.60 ERA through 65 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .257 batting average. He made 14 appearances, including 12 starts and two complete games, while going undefeated against PSAC West opponents. Gray and sophomore Matt Jimenez are the only other returners who made more than two starts last season. Look for both to push for weekend starts this season. Transfer Jordan Backes will add experience to a young staff. Backes is coming off a dominating sum-mer in the NYCBL. He will compete to be in the week-end rotation. Sophomore’s Eric Aschley and Sam O’Neill had a solid fall season. They look to be ready to compete for a starting role on the 2010 staff. Also look for freshman Ben Rawding and junior Scott Knoche to be in the mix. Rawding was the West-ern Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Pitch-er of the Year while Knoche has made great strides with his command since last season. With Walczak departed as the closer from a year ago, the Lakers will try to establish a solid bullpen with an infl ux of youth and steady upperclass leadership. Of the remaining arms, sophomore Jeremy Cressley has logged the most innings. Cressley could be a key set-up man and could also make some spot starts. Junior sidearm reliever Thurman Schaetzle has some experience in big situations. He is a great change-of-pace arm. Sophomore Joshua Graham made eight appearances last year and has a power arm that could fi ll the shoes left by Walczak. Of the remaining veteran arms, two are lefties. Junior Nick Scheetz has a strong arm and has shown steady improvement. Senior Rusty Gardner is the oth-er lefty and will need to work on consistency. The righties are junior Abe Rak and senior TJ Tavender. Rak has had to reinvent himself over the last few years after a rash of injuries set him back. He made strides last season and could see some innings this year if he remains healthy. Taveneder has a big upside and could be an as-set if he continues to work hard. Freshman Joe Cochran and Andrew Pruchinski are the new comers.
