Adopt-A-Flowerbed ProgramHelp make Ankeny beau-tiful; consider adopting a fl owerbed at one of the City’s parks or public buildings. Volunteers get to select the plants or fl owers that will go in their bed, plant them and weed throughout the season.

Ankeny’s Adopt-A-Flower-garden program started in 2004 with a handful of vol-

unteers and 19 gardens. In 2011, over 80 gardens were maintained throughout the spring and summer months with hopes to continue growing each year. Volunteers get to select the plants or fl owers that will go in their bed, plant them and weed throughout the season. The Parks & Recreation Department prepare the fl owerbeds, provide plant and bed materials and water the fl owers during the growing season. Lifeguards are needed for the 2012 Aquatic SeasonBeing a lifeguard may be the perfect job for you or your teen this summer. All lifeguards are re-quired to take and pass the American Red Cross training class. The training class is approximately a week long and includes a written test. Lifeguard training classes are off ered by the Des Moines Area Red Cross; for more information on local classes, go to www.desmoines-redcross.org. Before taking a job at the pool, lifeguards must be also certifi ed in CPR and First Aid. Ankeny Aquatic Cen-ters will be open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. For an application, stop in to the Parks and Recreation offi ces located at 210 S. Ankeny Blvd. or go online to www.ankenyiowa.gov. For any additional questions please contact Recreation Supervisor Nick Lenox 515.963.3576.

A collaborative partnership between the Ankeny Kiwanis Club and the City of Ankeny will benefi t the under served population of youth with special needs. With nearly 800 children with special needs in Ankeny alone and more than 3,500 between the ages of 5 and 15 living in central Iowa, there is a lack of recreational facilities to meet the needs of this special population. Play is one of the greatest gifts that children can receive and it is critical to their growth and development. If this project becomes a reality, we have done our job by creating an opportunity to play for everybody! The Miracle League Field and All-Inclusive Playground will be jointly located in Hawkeye Park and provide children with special needs and their families including: a non-competitive co-ed baseball league for children with special needs; a custom designed fi eld made of cushioned, rubberized turf that is completely fl at and free from obstacles; a network of Buddies to teach, assist and protect players during play, a 100% accessible playground on a rubberized surface located behind the Miracle Field, a playground that focuses on maximum “play value” with an emphasis on inclusive play;and a playground experience catering to kids with physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities. The goal is to raise $1 million for the construction of a Miracle League Field and All-Inclusive Playground. Cash and in-kind construction services are needed for several aspects of the project. If you would like more information or would like to contribute to the project, please contact Ryan Penning at [email protected] or 963-3574.

a special place for children with disabilities

Summerbrook Park Becomes place for Play and learning Most residents know Summerbrook Park as a great place for sledding with a fun playground, but did you know that it is now a place to learn about stormwater, stream restoration, and native land-scaping? If you take a tour of the park, located along SE Delaware Avenue between SE 8th Street and SE 9th Street, educational signs are located throughout the park that detail recent environmental improvements made to the park. During 2010-2011, construction took place to repair the stream channel. In many places, the stream had very eroded banks and sediment was getting into the stream. The stream restoration included creating gently-sloping banks, removing unsafe trees and installing check dams to slow down the fl ow of water. Additional stormwater retrofi t features were added to the park to infi ltrate stormwater instead of letting it run off into the storm drains. Native plants, which have deep root structures, were planted in several locations to also help with stormwater retention. New bioretention cells along SE Delaware Avenue take in dirty stormwater from the road and cleanse it before it eventually goes into the larger watershed of Fourmile Creek. Check out all the new features at Summerbrook Park, learn how they will improve Ankeny’s watershed and leave with some ideas to incorporate into your own garden.

Funding for this project came from the Iowa Department of Agriculture, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Metro Waste Authority, Polk Soil & Water Conservation District, the Water-shed Improvement Review Board, IJOBS (Iowa’s Infrastructure Investment Initiative) and the City of Ankeny. This bio-retention cell on SE Delaware

Avenue will help clean stormwater.
