MINISTRY EMPHASIS: The food pantry/clothes closet ministry provides food and clothing to needy families in our neighborhood. The pantry and clothes closet are open every Thursday from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. Food is distributed and the clothes closet is open for all to shop. This is also a place where people can come to share their experiences and situations, and sometimes to just fellowship and talk or have prayer. It is funded by contributions made to the Fellowship Fund and Food Pantry Fund and staffed by dedicated volunteers. We strive to provide well-packed bags of food each week. About 60% of food we distribute comes from the USDA program. A change in distribution of food from the Food Bank required that we pick up USDA food once a month instead of weekly. With this change, the amount of food picked up at one time required extra help. One week we picked up 3,600 pounds of food. In 2013, 19 volunteers gave over 2,200 hours of their time to make this ministry possible. Each week the volunteers sort donated clothes, shoes, etc., hang clothes in designated areas for women, men and children and assist clients in selecting clothes. Items chosen are bagged and toiletries given out if available. An important part of this ministry is to maintain a friendly environment where clients feel welcome and comfortable. Each week, a steady number of clients visit the clothes closet as the word spreads about this ministry. Consequently, we always need your clothing and shoes, particularly for men. If you visit us on any Thursday, do not be surprised if you hear laughter, for it truly is a fun working environment. Every week people tell us what a great thing this church is doing and how much they appreciate what we do and the way they are treated. I think that is what this ministry is about – whether it is getting food, clothing, or just having someone listen. We want people to feel better after coming here. We find every year that the people who serve in this ministry do so because they want to help others. We are still here because there is still a need and because we have people willing to help address the need. This is a ministry of serving, expecting nothing in return. We are just there to help. This is what it means to be the church! For the month of February, we are collection disposable razors and deodorant. Donated items will be shared at our weekly Clothes Closet and Food Pantry Ministry. If you are interested in helping to collect items or volunteer on Thursdays, please contact Dick Denzler. In 2013, we distributed 2,403 bags of groceries to over 600 families, includ- ing 82 homeless persons. Some came only once and some every month. On average, family came between 3 and 4 times a year. There were 225 families who visited the food pantry for the first time in 2013. We distrib- uted over 47,000 pounds of food (almost 24 tons) this year—an increase of 34% over 2012.

TOUR THE CHURCH BUILDINGTOUR THE CHURCH BUILDINGTOUR THE CHURCH BUILDINGTOUR THE CHURCH BUILDING

Have you ever found yourself lost inside our building? If so, you’re not alone. Many of our new (and not so new) family members find themselves lost and confused if they try to venture beyond the main sanctuary. Our current wor-ship space was built in stages over the past 100 years. As the Church grew, more space was added wherever possi-ble. The resulting maze is functional, yet quirky, not unlike Tabernacle itself. This Sunday, February 23 Joe Perdue will lead a tour of the building immediately following the service. It should last no more than fifteen minutes. Everyone who is inter-ested should meet at the front of the sanctuary. Whether you’ve been coming for a few weeks or many years chances are you will learn something new about our build-ing or perhaps teach us something new. Following the tour a group is planning on getting lunch at Jorge’s Cantina on the corner of Floyd and Robinson. It is a short walk from the Church and features $1 tacos on Sundays.

Help CARITAS transform lives and restore dignity to our most vulnerable neighbors! In addition to providing over-night shelter, they also re-house formerly homeless fami-lies. CARITAS needs our help to build its Furniture Bank stock so that families can furnish their homes. Especially needed are (new or gently used): sofas, beds (both frames and mattresses), sheets, towels, blankets, kitchen tables and chairs, and pots and pans. All donations are tax-deductible, and a receipt will be given at the time of dona-tion. Drop-off donations are accepted at six different loca-tions. Addresses and contact information can be found at http://www.caritasva.org/donate_furniture.html. CARI-TAS will also pick up large items for a fee of between $30 and $40 based on the items donated and the travelling distance. Call 804-343-5008 to schedule a pickup.
