Heater failure detectionThe 3200 range can accommodate a current transformerinput that can be used to monitor the status of the heaters.Normally used to provide early indication of a heater fault,this input can also be used to measure the actual currentflowing and indicate the value on the front HMI, providealarm output, or make information available to asupervisory system for power usage calculations.
Easy recipe selectionRecipes can be used to change the operating parametersof the controller or even to change the full configuration -allowing one basic controller to be easily adapted to manyapplications. Recipes can be selected by the controller HMIusing an understandable user defined name, by externalhardware signals, or by digital communications.
Config adaptorPC configuration of all 3000 Series can be achieved byusing a configuration adaptor. It gives iTools the ability to communicate and configure devices without any power being connected. This device is ideal for distributors and OEMs who need to stock a wide range of options.

Setpoint programmingAn impressive Ramp/Soakprogrammer is available inthe 3500. The ability to storeup to 50 different programs,each with dual channelcapability makes its idealfor applications such asheat treatment furnaces,autoclaves andenvironmentalchambers – whereoften more than onevariable needs tobe profiled. The 3500has functionality notnormally found in aproduct of this class and itsflexibility in being able tointeract with other function blocksmakes it a very powerful device.
I/O expanderThe I/O expander provides increased programmerfunctionality by increasing the digital I/O capability andexpands the 3500logic capacity by upto 40 I/O.
Flexible and Creative Solutions
System integrationBy devolving loop control to a 3000 Series controller a PLCis able to concentrate on providing fast and effective logiccontrol without the burden of running complex controlalgorithms. The 3000 Series controllers also offer bettercontrol performance than a PLC, the comfort of single loopintegrity and ease of replacement without stopping theprocess.
A wide range of communication options are catered for bysimply plugging in the appropriate module. All unitssupport both RS232 and 2-wire RS485 communicationsusing the Modbus RTU network protocol. Additionally the3508 and 3504 support 4-wire RS485 and Profibus DP,DeviceNet® and Modbus TCP network protocols.
Serial communicationsUtilising one of the most common protocols used withinthe Industrial Automation market, the Eurothermimplementation of Modbus RTU is based on a fixedaddress table. Parameter addresses are fixed and do notmove depending on how the unit is configured makingcommunication to intelligent masters very easy toaccomplish.

Real-world applicationsWhether its for excellence in control,ease of use or its flexible and creativesolutions, the 3000 Series can be usedin many applications to solve problemsand save time and money.
A current transformer input in the 3200measures the current switched throughthe load. The measurement is filtered sothat the on current and off currents canbe separated. From this it is possible todiagnose several load faults includingpartial load failure, over current and anSSR fault. Typical applications includeplastic extrusion, laboratory ovens andother applications where earlyindication of heater failure can saveenergy and rework costs.
The 3000 recipe function is unique in a controller of this class. Recipes can bestored under a user-defined name to recall a number of parameter settings.These settings may include operating variables or configuration parameters,providing a very powerful means of altering the set up of a controller in asingle operation. Recipes may be recalled either from the HMI, over thecommunications link, or using digital inputs.
Heater failure detection
Recipes
ProgrammerMany applications need to vary temperature, or other process values, with time. Thesetpoint is varied by using a setpoint program. The program is stored as a series of‘ramp’ and ‘dwell’ segments.
All 3000 Series controllers provide this feature. The 3200 has an extremely easy touse 8 segment programmer for simple applications while the 3500 has a very flexibledual channel programmerwith storage for 50 programs. The 3500 is ideal for furnace, environmental chamber and autoclave applications that require greater flexibility.
Feedforward
Feedforward is a control technique used tocompensate for future disturbances orprocess changes. It provides an offset onthe controller PID calculation to ensure thatcorrective action is taken to prevent themeasured PV being disturbed. A typicalapplication is additive dosing. Bymeasuring the flow rate upstream from thedosing pump it is possible to use thefeedforward feature of the 3500 to achievean output proportional to the fluid flowrate. This means that the dosing rateimmediately tracks any changes in flow rateand so prevents any possibility ofdangerous over dosing.
The simple timer in the 3200 may be used tocontrol batch operations, eg. food ovens,sterilisers, fryers. Ideal for any application requiringa single dwell at the end of either a controlledramp or natural approach to setpoint without theneed for an additional timing device.

Master comms In all 3000 Series controllers it ispossible to use the Modbus RTUcommunication link to send a value,(often setpoint) from one controllerto a network of slave devices -providing the economical creationof multi-zone temperature controlsolutions.
Transducer scalingUser calibration can be performed in all 3000 Seriescontrollers.
The 3200 provides a simple two point calibration onits input and the 3500 has a comprehensive set oftransducer scaling options that make it ideal formelt pressure, load cell or comparison typecalibrations.
The Dual Loop capability in the 3500 makes it ideal for controlling interactive processes such asthose found in carburising furnaces, environmental chambers, autoclaves and fermenters. All ofthese applications require control and often setpoint programming of two variables. By using theadvanced maths and logic functions within the 3500, intelligent control strategies can be created tocompensate for interactive effects between variables and maintain them at setpoint.
Dual loop
The zirconia block calculates carbon potential,oxygen concentration and dewpoint based on thetemperature and probe mVmeasurements from a zirconiaoxygen probe. Probe burn-offsequence and diagnosticalarms are also available tohelp extend the life of theprobe and predict impendingprobe failure while minimisingdowntime and rework. Thisfeature enables the 3500 to beused to control carbonpotential in an atmospherefurnace, an inert atmosphere ina sintering furnace anddewpoint in an endothermicgenerator.
Zirconia
The HMI on 3000 Seriescontrollers are customisable toshow plant information in theformat that is most useful for theoperator. Customisable scrollingtext can indicate event andalarm conditions, to triggeranother function, or instruct anoperator of the current state ofthe process. The 3500 hasadditional facilities to enable auser to design their own userinterface.
Messages
The Dual Valve Positioning (VP) feature on the 3500 allows two motorised valves to be modulatedfrom one controller. Typically one valve would actuate a burner or hot air inlet and the other acooling damper. This feature removes the need to interface the controller via external positioners. The VP feature can be used with or without a feedback potentiometer and can also be used with PIDin either control channel to provide control strategies such as PID Heat/VP Cool.
